MOVIES I SAW LAST WEEK-
1) CIVIL WAR– 2024. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “From filmmaker Alex Garland comes a journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.”

4/12/24- This movie got mixed and controversial reviews and at the same time led to a lively discussion. TRDB.

2) PERFECT DAYS– 2024. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Hirayama seems utterly content with his simple life as a cleaner of toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his very structured everyday routine he enjoys his passion for music and for books. And he loves trees and takes photos of them. A series of unexpected encounters gradually reveal more of his past. A deeply moving and poetic reflection on finding beauty in the everyday world around us.”

2/12/23- Excellent reviews by the critics and audiences as well for this Japanese drama. TRDB.

4/30/24– One of the slowest movies I have seen in a long time and certainly not for everybody. I liked the last hour. TRDB.

With nothing more than their seven children, suitcases, and their love of music, David (for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone) and his pregnant wife Helen (Daisy Betts) set out to rebuild their lives. These stirring vignettes, humorous and affecting, capture the spirit and determination of people amidst adversity, offering a nuanced portrait of a complex society.’

4/28/24- Excellent reviews for this drama. TRDB.

5) HUMANE takes place over a single day, mere months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. But when the father’s plan goes horribly awry, tensions flare and chaos erupts among his children.

APRIL 27, 2024-
DEAR FRIENDS:
I HOPE TO SEE “CIVIL WAR” THIS WEEK AS IT IS SHOWING NEARBY-
QUICK LOOK AT MY FAVORITES OF THE WEEK- NONE
MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK-
1) THE LONG GAME– 2024. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “In 1956, JB Peña and his wife moved to the small town of Del Rio, TX, partly for a job as a school superintendent, but mostly to fulfill JB’s dream of joining the prestigious, all-white Del Rio Country Club. So when JB is rejected on the basis of his skin color, he is devastated. But his world soon collides with a group of young Latino golf caddies who work at the country club, and JB is inspired by the handmade course the boys built in the country to teach themselves golf.”

4/21/24- Fair reviews from the critics and very good ones from audiences. TRDB. I think that it was a feel good movie saved because it was basically a true story. A bit too much lecturing us on how to get ahead in life. TRDB.

2) WE GROWN NOW– 2024. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “In 1992 Chicago, as Michael Jordan solidifies himself as a champion, a story of two young legends in their own right begins. As wide-eyed and imaginative best friends Malik and Eric traverse the city, looking to escape the mundaneness of school and the hardships of growing up in public housing, their unbreakable bond is challenged when tragedy shakes their community just as they are learning to fly.”

4/21/24- Very good reviews for this drama. TRDB.

3) EGOIST– 2023.  Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Based on Makoto Takayama’s semi-autobiographical novel, director Daishi Matsunaga’s EGOIST is a uniquely sexy and heartfelt drama about family. Kosuke, a fashion magazine editor in his mid-30s, revels in the blessings of his comfortable lifestyle. When he hires Ryuta, a personal trainer, in order to get into shape, he gets more than he bargained for.
