MAY 5, 2024-
DEAR FRIENDS:
MOVIES I SAW LAST WEEK-
1)
CIVIL WAR– 2024. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “From filmmaker Alex Garland comes a journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.”
4/12/24- This movie got mixed and controversial reviews and at the same time led to a lively discussion. TRDB.
2) PERFECT DAYS– 2024. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Hirayama seems utterly content with his simple life as a cleaner of toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his very structured everyday routine he enjoys his passion for music and for books. And he loves trees and takes photos of them. A series of unexpected encounters gradually reveal more of his past. A deeply moving and poetic reflection on finding beauty in the everyday world around us.”
2/12/23- Excellent reviews by the critics and audiences as well for this Japanese drama. TRDB.
4/30/24– One of the slowest movies I have seen in a long time and certainly not for everybody. I liked the last hour. TRDB.
NEW MOVIES IN THEATERS AND/OR STREAMING-
1)
CHALLENGERS– 2024. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Challengers stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Married to a champion on a losing streak (Mike Faist – West Side Story), Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick (Josh O’Connor.)
4/27/24- Very good reviews from the critics and so-so ones from audiences. TRDB. In Theaters
2)
NOWHERE SPECIAL– Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “When single father John is given only a few months left to live, he tries to find the perfect family for his young son while shielding the boy from the terrible reality of the situation. As he struggles to find the right answer for the impossible task, he meets a social worker who opens him up to solutions he never would have considered.”
4/28/2024- Excellent reviews from critics and audiences. TRDB. In theaters
3)
UNSUNG HERO– 2024. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Based on a remarkable true story, Unsung Hero follows David Smallbone as he moves his family from Down Under to the States, searching for a brighter future after his successful music company collapses. With nothing more than their seven children, suitcases, and their love of music, David (for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone) and his pregnant wife Helen (Daisy Betts) set out to rebuild their lives. Helen’s faith stands against all odds and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs.”
3/24/24- No professional reviews yet but the movie sounds interesting. TRDB.
4/27/24- Awful reviews from the critics and excellent ones from audiences. TRDB.
4)
TERRESTRIAL VERSES– 2024. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Terrestrial Verses follows everyday people from all walks of life as they navigate the cultural, religious, and institutional constraints imposed on them by various social authorities, from school teachers to bureaucrats. These stirring vignettes, humorous and affecting, capture the spirit and determination of people amidst adversity, offering a nuanced portrait of a complex society.’
4/28/24- Excellent reviews for this drama. TRDB.
5) HUMANE takes place over a single day, mere months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. But when the father’s plan goes horribly awry, tensions flare and chaos erupts among his children.
4/28/24- Weak reviews in general and I’d skip it. TRDB
6)
THE FEELING THAT THE TIME FOR DOING SOMETHING HAS PASSED– 2024. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Ann, a morose New Yorker in her 30’s, feels stuck in all areas of her life. To her dismay, the years have gone by quickly in her long-term casual BDSM relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family. As she begins to feel increasingly alienated, she wrestles with herself.”
