MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK-
1) YOU HURT MY FEELINGS– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a popular writer, and her husband Don, a well-liked teacher, share the kind of relationship that truly, seriously, for the love of God cannot be real: that is, they’re actually in love. Even after decades of marriage, parenting, and their own successful careers, their physical spark has somehow not diminished; in fact, they seem to relish the opportunity to share a single ice cream cone and drive others — including their son, Charlie — mad.”

The new government orders all Native Hawaiians suspected of having the foreign disease banished permanently to a remote colony on the island of Moloka’i that is known as ‘the island of the living grave’. When a local cowboy named Ko’olau (Jason Scott Lee) and his young son Kalei (Kahiau Perreira) contract the dreaded disease, they refuse to allow their family to be separated, sparking an armed clash with brutal white island authorities.”

3) WE MIGHT AS WELL BE DEAD– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “A high-rise building near the forest is famous for its carefully curated community. When a dog disappears and her daughter refuses to leave the bathroom, security officer ANNA faces an absurd battle against an irrational fear, that slowly spreads amongst the residents and rattles this utopia with a view.”

4) WILL-O’-THE WISP– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “On his deathbed, his royal highness Alfredo, King without a crown, is taken back to distant youth memories and the time he dreamt of becoming a fireman. The encounter with instructor Afonso from the fire brigade, opens a new chapter in the life of the two young men immersed in love and desire, and the will to change the status quo.”

5) UNCLENCHING THE FISTS– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Ada is stuck. Living in a dead-end industrial town in North Ossetia, she is caught in the tight grip of the men in her life. 6) WHITE BALLS ON WALLS– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art wants to become more diverse and inclusive. But how to go about that? An honest look behind the scenes into the sometimes-fraught process taking place in many public institutions.”

5/26/23- Just 4 reviews so far and they are good for this Dutch documentary and they are good  TRDB.

7) BEING MARY TYLER MOORE– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Chronicling the vanguard career of Mary Tyler Moore, weaving her personal narrative with the beats of her professional accomplishments, highlighting her groundbreaking roles and the indelible impact she had on generations of women who came after her.”

8) VICTIM/SUSPECT– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Directed by Academy Award® nominee Paul Schrader based on his original screenplay, MASTER GARDENER follows Narvel Roth (award-winner Joel Edgerton), the meticulous horticulturist of Gracewood Gardens. He is as much devoted to tending the grounds of this beautiful and historic estate, to pandering to his employer, the wealthy dowager Mrs. Haverhill.”

2) THE NIGHT OF THE 12th.-2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “In nearly every police precinct, detectives are inevitably confronted with a case that goes unsolved. The more heinous the crime, the more it haunts those whose duty it is solve it. Such is the dilemma for Yohan Vivès–a young, recently promoted police Captain–when he begins investigating the gruesome murder of a young women named Clara in the town of Grenoble.”

About to inherit his late father’s position and fortune, Hal tries to end their relationship, but when his attempt to cut ties backfires, disaster ensues.”

4) THE COW WHO SANG A SONG INTO THE FUTURE–  2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “When thousands of fish die in a polluted river in southern Chile, Magdalena, a woman long-deceased, emerges amongst their lifeless bodies. Magdalena encounters her widowed husband, sending him into a state of shock and prompting the return of their daughter, Cecilia. Magdalena’s presence and her effect on the environment stirs curiosity and fear among her family. As the past comes into focus, mother and daughter are met with the opportunity to change the future.”

6) STAY AWAKE– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “A quietly powerful look at the ripple effects of opioid addiction, STAY AWAKE explores addiction from the lesser-seen viewpoint of the caretakers–in this case teenaged brothers Oleff and Argus. Their mother, played by Metz, is loving and well-meaning but powerless to pull herself out of the destructive cycle of her disease.”

7) BUTTERFLY VISION– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “After spending months as a prisoner in Donbas, Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance expert Lilia returns home to her family. But the trauma of captivity continues to torment her and surface in dreamlike ways. Something growing deep within Lilia will not allow her to forget, yet she refuses to identify as a victim and will fight to liberate herself.”

8)  MUSEUM OF THE REVOLUTION– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “”The wind got up in the night and took our plans away,” reads the proverb in the opening titles of MUSEUM OF THE REVOLUTION. It’s a reference to the 1961 plan to build a grand museum in Belgrade as a tribute to Socialist Yugoslavia. Meant to “safeguard the truth” about the Yugoslav people, the plan never got beyond the construction of the basement. The derelict building now tells a very different story from the one envisioned by the initiators 60 years ago. The cavernous, damp, pitch-dark space is inhabited by the outcasts of a society reshaped by capitalism.”

9) WHITE BUILDING– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “20-year-old Samnang and two of his friends live in the White Building, a landmark tenement in Phnom Penh. In this fast-changing city, the three boys practice their dance routine dreaming of television talent contests while their parents lead a more traditional lifestyle. But the White Building is to be demolished. Samnang observes his father unsuccessfully attempting to bring together his divided neighbors on the government’s compensation offers for residents to move out, and he must face his best friend’s departure from Cambodia.”

The mismatched travel companions form an unexpected bond as they concede to the hardships of their own lives, and their hunt for answers becomes a surreal journey of self-discovery and empowerment.”

1) THE QUIET GIRL– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Rural Ireland. 1981. Nine-year-old Cait is sent away from her overcrowded, dysfunctional family to live with foster parents for the summer. Quietly struggling at school and at home, she has learned to hide in plain sight from those around her. She blossoms in their care, but in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.”

2) UNREST– 2023. “Unrest is the story of young watchmaker, Josephine, in 1877 Switzerland, who gets involved with the rising anarchist movement as new technologies begin to transform money, time and labor in a small town.”

5/7/23- Good reviews for this French drama. The NY Times liked it very much. TRDB.

3) CHILE ’76– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Chile, 1976. Carmen heads off to her beach house to supervise its renovation. Her husband, children and grandchildren come back and forth during the winter vacation. When the family priest asks her to take care of a young man he is sheltering in secret, Carmen steps onto unexplored territories, away from the quiet life she is used to.”

4)  YOU CAN LIVE FOREVER– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. ‘In the early ’90s, gay teen Jaime is sent to live with her devout Jehovah’s Witness relatives after the death of her father. Jaime makes an unexpected connection with Marike, daughter of a prominent Witness Elder. The two are instantly drawn to each other, and begin a secret, unspoken romance.”
