CODEPENDENT LESBIAN SPACE ALIEN SEEKS SAME- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Bashful greeting card store employee Jane (Lisa Haas) falls in love with Zoinx (Susan Ziegler), who just happens to hail from outer space. Soon, their romance gets disrupted by two Men in Black (Dennis Davis and Alex Karpovsky) who seek to uncover a wide-scale invasion of lesbian aliens. Jackie Monahan, Cynthia Kaplan, Clay Drinko and Rae C. Wright also star in this comedy by director Madeleine Olnek.”

1/6/12- This one sounds a bit different but has received good reviews including one in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

THE HUNTER (2012)

THE HUNTER- 2012. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Recently released from prison, Ali (writer-director Rafi Pitts) attempts to make the most of his return to Tehran, amidst much talk of the upcoming elections and promises of change. Forced to work nights, he still tries to spend as much time as he can with his wife and their young daughter, escaping the stress of urban life through hunting trips to the secluded forest north of the city. But one day, Ali’s family goes missing-and after a long and fruitless experience with the police, Ali’s own search for his missing daughter ends in horror, pushing him over the edge into an act of terrible violence. He flees the city, pursued by the police, but soon the line between hunter and hunted becomes difficult to define.”

1/4/12- Very good review in today’s NY Times but otherwise only average reviews. TRDB.

9/1/12- Slow but interesting  and I liked it. TRDB. Netflix.

RED TAILS

RED TAILS- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “The 332nd Fighter Group, an all-black World War II unit made up of the best escort pilots and known as the Red Tails, fights racism at home while fighting the Nazis abroad in this action-packed drama based on the true story of the Tuskegee Airmen.”

1/20/12- Excellent audience reviews, poor professional ones and a “just OK” review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

8/6/12-An awful movie replete with every generalization you’ve heard of on this topic. I turned it off quickly. TRDB. Netflix.

ALBATROSS- 2011. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Aspiring writer Emelia has been bought up by her grandparents and is under the impression that she is the great granddaughter of renowned novelist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Jonathan sees promise in Emelia and begins to tutor her, as Beth becomes enamoured with her forthright friend and decides to take her along on a visit to Oxford University – with hilariously raucous results. As Emelia’s confidence and free-spirit help Beth learn to enjoy life beyond, Emelia too is inspired by Beth’s determination to focus and she begins to see a way to break through her self-destructive tendencies. However, when Emelia and Jonathan begin an illicit affair, the girls’ friendship is threatened. Can Emelia and Beth escape the ties of small town existence and free themselves of the Albatross around their necks?” Weak early reviews. TRDB.

ROADIE

ROADIE- 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this taut drama, middle-aged Jimmy Testagross loses his gig as roadie for a has-been rock band and moves back in with his ailing mother. With no job or skills, Jimmy must find a way to let go of his overextended adolescence and become his own man.” Very good reviews. TRDB.

1/6/12- Review is fair at best in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

4/9/12- A good story and I liked it. TRDB. Netflix.

NORWEGIAN WOOD

NORWEGIAN WOOD- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “Set in 1969 Tokyo, this melancholic tale centers on serious young college freshman Toru Watanabe (Ken’ichi Matsuyama), whose developing relationship with childhood friend Naoko (Rinko Kikuchi) drags into the present a terrible event both would rather bury. While Naoko begins to withdraw, Toru awakens to the political and cultural tumult around him, and when he meets the intriguing Midori (Kiko Mizuhara), Toru must confront his own uncertain heart.” Very good reviews. TRDB.

7/7/12- This film was way too slow, even for me. There was no life to any of the characters. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA

ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “A body has been buried in the grasslands of rural Turkey. Over the course of one night, a doctor and a detective from a nearby town join a search effort in which the desolate landscape comes to symbolize their own solemn, insular lives.” Very good professional reviews but so far audiences just so-so. TRDB.

8/27/12- This movie was as slow as  frozen molasses. Very little happened but for some reason I stuck in out and actually enjoyed it. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.
