MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK-
1) WOMEN TALKING– 12/2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Do nothing. Stay and fight. Or leave. In 2010, the women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling a brutal reality with their faith.”

2) THE QUIET GIRL– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Rural Ireland. 1981. Nine-year-old Cait is sent away from her overcrowded, dysfunctional family to live with foster parents for the summer. Quietly struggling at school and at home, she has learned to hide in plain sight from those around her. She blossoms in their care, but in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.”

NEW MOVIES IN THEATERS AND/OR STREAMING-
1) THE HOLLY– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “In Denver, former gang leader-turned activist Terrance Roberts shoots a young gang member at a peace rally. Journalist Julian Rubinstean digs deeper and finds himself caught up in a world of political machinations, gang activity and gentrification.”

2) SPLIT AT THE ROOT– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “When a Guatemalan mother seeking asylum was separated from her kids under Zero Tolerance Policy, a Facebook post by a mom in Queens coalesced into a movement as thousands of like-minded women across the US refused to stand by quietly. Immigrant Families Together was born; a rapid response group committed to doing what the government couldn’t — or wouldn’t do: reunite parents with their children separated by the Zero Tolerance Policy.”

3/5/23- Fair reviews for this documentary, including some very good ones. TRDB. Netflix

3) PALM TREES AND POWER LINES– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Seventeen-year-old Lea (Lily McInerny) spends her summer break aimlessly tanning in her backyard with her best friend, tiptoeing around her needy mother, and getting stoned with a group of boys from school. This monotony is interrupted by a chance encounter with Tom (Jonathan Tucker), an older man who promises an alternative to Lea’s unsatisfying adolescent life.”

3/5/23- Mostly excellent reviews for this drama. TRDB. Prime Video

4) WHAT WE DO NEXT– 2023. 3/5/23- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

6) GODS OF MEXICO– 2023. Using richly saturated color and hypnotic black-and-white interludes, filmmaker Helmut Dosantos takes viewers through salt pans, deserts, highlands, jungle, and underground mines–paying tribute to those who fight to preserve their cultural identity amidst the shadows of modernization.”

8) THE FORGER– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Berlin, 1940. Cioma Schönhaus (Louis Hofmann, star of the hit Neflix series Dark) is a young Jewish man who won’t let anyone take away his zest for life, especially not the Nazis. Since the best hiding spots are in plain sight, Cioma audaciously adopts the identity of a marine officer to escape being deported like his family before him.”

3/6/23- Fair reviews for this German historical drama. TRDB.

9) SANSON AND ME– 2023.
