——————————————————————————————————-
MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK-
1) PELOSI IN THE HOUSE– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “In her 14th documentary film for HBO, acclaimed documentarian Alexandra Pelosi offers a candid, behind-the-scenes chronicle of the life of her mother and Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, through her career milestones leading up to the inauguration of President Joseph Biden in January 2021. Filmed in a cinéma vérité style over the course of three decades, PELOSI IN THE HOUSE provides a unique, longitudinal window into the life of a longstanding Democratic politician and history in the making.”

12/18/22- Fair reviews from the critics and poor ones from audiences but I liked this documentary very much. TRDB.

2) THE FABELMANS– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Young Sammy Fabelman falls in love with movies after his parents take him to see “The Greatest Show on Earth.” Armed with a camera, Sammy starts to make his own films at home, much to the delight of his supportive mother.”

12/18/22- Excellent reviews from the critics and fair ones from audiences. TRDB.

NEW MOVIES IN THEATERS AND/OR STREAMING-
1)) THE SUPER 8 YEARS– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “The French writer and 2022 Nobel Prize awardee Annie Ernaux, whose novels and memoirs have gained her a devoted following (and whose autobiographical L’Événement was adapted just last year into the critically acclaimed film Happening), opens a treasure trove with this delicate journey into her family’s memory.”

12/18/22- Excellent reviews for this French documentary. TRDB.

2) THE QUIET GIRL– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Rural Ireland. 1981. Nine-year-old Cait is sent away from her overcrowded, dysfunctional family to live with foster parents for the summer. Quietly struggling at school and at home, she has learned to hide in plain sight from those around her. She blossoms in their care, but in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.”

12/18//22- Excellent reviews from the critics and audiences as well. TRDB.

3) CHILDREN OF THE MIST– 2021. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Di is a 12-year-old girl living in Vietnam. She belongs to the Hmong ethnic minority where women get married very young, enduring the controversial tradition of “bride-kidnapping.” On the Lunar New Year’s Eve, Di has disappeared.”

12/20/22- Just a few reviews for this Vietnamese documentary and they are terrific. TRDB.

4) THE VOLCANO: RESCUE FROM WHAKAARI– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “A close examination of the Whakaari / White Island volcanic eruption of 2019 in which 22 lives were lost, the film viscerally recounts a day when ordinary people were called upon to do extraordinary things, placing this tragic event within the larger context of nature, resilience, and the power of our shared humanity.”

12/20/22- Good reviews for this documentary. TRDB. On Netflix

5) NELLY & NADINE– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Nelly & Nadine is the unlikely love story between two women falling in love on Christmas Eve, 1944, in the Ravensbruck concentration camp. Despite being separated in the last months of the war, Nelly and Nadine manage to later reunite and spend the rest of their life together. For many years their love story was kept a secret, even to some of their closest family.”

12/20/22- Excellent reviews for this documentary. TRDB.
