NEW MOVIES IN THEATERS AND/OR STREAMING-
1) BENEDICTION– 2021. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Terence Davies, Benediction explores the turbulent life of WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon (Jack Lowden). The writer and soldier was a complex man who survived the horrors of fighting in the First World War and was decorated for his bravery but who became a vocal critic of the government’s continuation of the war when he returned from service.”

2) FIRE ISLAND– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “The story centers on two best friends (Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang) who set out to have a legendary summer adventure with the help of cheap rosé and their cadre of eclectic friends.”

3)  MIRACLE– 2022. Synopsis by RT. Divided into two chapters, director Bogdan George Apetri’s MIRACLE begins with the young, beautiful Cristina Tofan (Ioana Bugarin) sneaking away from an isolated convent. The film’s second part follows Marius Preda (Emanuel Pârvu), a determined inspector retracing Cristina’s steps days after her departure.”

4) THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN– 2022. Synopsis by RT. “THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN tells the heartwarming true story of Maurice Flitcroft (Mark Rylance), a dreamer and unrelenting optimist. This humble crane operator from Barrow-in-Furness managed to gain entry to The British Open Golf Championship qualifying in 1976, despite never playing a round of golf before. He shot the worst round in Open history and drew the ire of the golfing elite, but became a folk hero in the process and, more importantly, showed his family the importance of pursuing your dreams.”

5) FORTUNE FAVORS LADY NIKUKO– 2022. Synopsis by RT. “Brash single mother Nikuko is well-known for her bold spirit, much to the embarrassment of Kikuko, her pensive yet imaginative daughter. In contrast to her mother, Kikuko wants nothing more than to fit in as she navigates the everyday social dramas of middle school. Life in the harbor is peaceful until a shocking revelation from the past threatens to uproot the pair’s tender relationship.”

6) MY DEAD DAD– 2022. Synopsis by RT. “In this charming coming-of-age drama young burnout Lucas (Pedro Correa) is notified that his estranged father has passed away. Relieved to never have to hear about him again Lucas learns that his father left him the responsibility of managing an apartment complex in Los Angeles. Determined to sell off the complex without a second thought Lucas meets the eclectic tenants and soon discovers his father was a different man than the one he knew.”

a) WORLD’S GREATEST DAD– Premise by Netflix. “Play Preview After his son (Daryl Sabara) dies in an awkward freak accident, high school poetry teacher Lance (Robin Williams) ghostwrites a suicide note to spare the family embarrassment. But when the note becomes an unexpected hit, Lance sees a chance to resurrect his writing career. In a bid for literary fame, Lance writes his son’s journal and passes it off as his own. Writer-director Bob Goldthwait‘s comedy debuted at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.” This film got fairly good reviews and I’ll see it.

12/10/09– I saw this and liked it a lot. One critic called the film “a mind blowing shot of black-comic genius” and I agree. Netflix. 12/09
