MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK-
1) THE HUMANS– 2021. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this affecting drama set at a shabby Manhattan duplex, Brigid Blake and her family gather for a Thanksgiving celebration. But as the evening progresses, grievances are aired, and tensions soon begin to rise.”

Rotten Tomatoes had this to say—  “Erik Blake has gathered three generations of his Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter’s apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the group’s deepest fears are laid bare. The piercingly funny and haunting debut film from writer-director Stephen Karam, adapted from his Tony Award-winning play, The Humans explores the hidden dread of a family and the love that binds them together.”

11/28/21- I liked the movie but less than the critics did. TRDB.

2) BURNING– 2021. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Burning takes an unflinching look at the unprecedented and catastrophic Australian bushfires of 2019-2020, known as ‘Black Summer.’ Fueled by climate change, the nation’s hottest and driest summer ever recorded resulted in bushfires that burned over 59 million acres, killed an estimated three billion animals, and affected millions of Australians.”

11/28/21- Excellent reviews for this documentary. I saw it and I agree! TRDB.

3) BELFAST– 2021. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “BELFAST is a movie straight from Branagh’s own experience. A nine-year-old boy must chart a path towards adulthood through a world that has suddenly turned upside down. His stable and loving community and everything he thought he understood about life is changed forever but joy, laughter, music and the formative magic of the movies remain.”

12/1/21- I liked this movie very much. Lucky there were sub-titles. TRDB.

4) THE POWER OF THE DOG– 2021. Synopsis by Netflix. “In 1925 Montana, the relationship between brothers Phil and George — rich ranchers who are polar opposites — sours when George weds a young widow and Phil begins a relentless crusade to torment his sibling’s wife and her bookish teenage son.”

12/1/21- Slow but I liked this Western. Great scenery and great music as well.  TRDB.

3) JUNGLE CRUISE– 2021. Synopsis by Netflix. “Inspired by the classic Disneyland ride, this action-adventure follows persevering scientist Lily Houghton in her search for a fabled tree with healing properties — a quest that takes her into the Amazon jungle with an intrepid riverboat captain.”

10/7/21- Something for everyone in this clever. humorous action packed movie. I liked it. TRDB.

4) THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE- 2021. Synopsis by Netflix. “Dressed to the nines and with a face full of paint, Tammy Faye Bakker preaches a gospel of acceptance and prosperity on “The PTL Club.” But her fall from grace is swift and precipitous after she and her hubby, Jim, are rocked by a series of scandals.”

5) SOUTH OF HEAVEN– 2021. Synopsis by Netflix. “Convicted felon Jimmy gets early parole after serving twelve years for armed robbery. Upon his release he vows to give his girlfriend Annie, who is dying of cancer, the best last year of her life.”

1) DRIVE MY CAR– 2021. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Two years after his wife’s unexpected death, Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), a renowned stage actor and director, receives an offer to direct a production of Uncle Vanya at a theater festival in Hiroshima. There, he meets Misaki Watari (Toko Miura), a taciturn young woman assigned by the festival to chauffeur him in his beloved red Saab 900. As the production’s premiere approaches, tensions mount amongst the cast and crew, not least between Yusuke and Koji Takatsuki, a handsome TV star who shares an unwelcome connection to Yusuke’s late wife.”

5) A BOY CALLED CHRISTMAS– 2021. 6) KEEP SWEET-2021. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Warren Jeffs was the Prophet of the FLDS, an offshoot of Mormonism. Jeffs demanded absolute loyalty, and instituted complete adherence to the religion, requiring strict dress codes, banishing community celebrations and casting out followers who didn’t fall in line. His controversial reign ended with a conviction for sexual assault with underage girls, landing him in jail for life. 5) KURT VONNEGUT: UNSTUCK IN TIME- 2021. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes–  KURT VONNEGUT: UNSTUCK IN TIME is a dazzling, worthy tribute to Vonnegut and a compelling introduction for the uninitiated. The feature documentary — the first of its kind on Vonnegut — is a deep, immersive dive into the author’s upbringing and his creative output.
