MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK-
1) SOUND OF METAL– 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “For heavy metal drummer Ruben, the discovery that he’s losing his hearing is an ironic and devastating blow. Finding respite in a group home with roommates who are also deaf, Ruben slowly begins to accept his new reality.”

2) MANK- 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “When Orson Welles calls upon hard-drinking screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz to pen the script for “Citizen Kane,” he seizes the chance, drawing on all of his industry experience to tell the thinly veiled story of William Randolph Hearst.”

12/8/20- I don’t know what all the hoopla is about but this movie was boring as hell. TRDB.

2) CRITICAL THINKING– 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “Making his directorial debut with this fact-based drama, John Leguizamo stars as a dedicated teacher who — against all odds — leads a team of underprivileged kids from one of Miami’s toughest high schools to the national chess championship.”

1) I’M YOUR WOMAN– 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “Set in the 1970s, this gritty drama follows young mom Jean, who’s living comfortably in suburbia till her hubby runs afoul of his criminal cohorts and disappears. With his foes closing in on Jean, she’s forced to go on the run with the couple’s baby.”

12/4/2020- Fair reviews in general but some of the reviews were pretty good and I would try to see it. TRDB. Begins streaming on 12/11/20- ?where

2) 76 DAYS– 2020. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “A raw, fly-on-the-wall recounting of hospital life in Wuhan in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, 76 Days is an engrossing and potent documentary – and a surprisingly comforting portrait of humanity.”

3) ANOTHER ROUND– 2020. Synopsis by IMDB. “Four friends, all high school teachers, test a theory that they will improve their lives by maintaining a constant level of alcohol in their blood.”

4) MAYOR– 2020. “The movie deals with the possibility of Palestinian statehood. About the working of government at the city level.” TRDB.

5) BLACK BEAR– 2020. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “A filmmaker plays a calculated game of desire and jealousy in pursuit of a work of art that blurs the boundaries between autobiography and invention.”

6) BILLIE– 2019. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “In 1971, journalist Linda Lipnack Kuehl set out to write the definitive biography of Billie Holiday. Over 8 years, she tracked down and tape-recorded over 200 hours of interviews with the extraordinary characters that populated the iconic singer’s short, tumultuous life. However, Linda’s book was never finished and the tapes never heard — until now.”

7) CROCK OF GOLD: A FEW ROUNDS WITH SHANE MacGOWAN– 2020. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Filmmaker Julien Temple dives deep into the life of Shane MacGowan, the tortured vocalist best known as the lead singer and songwriter of the Pogues, who famously combined traditional Irish music with the visceral energy of punk rock.”

8) FAREWELL AMOR– 2020. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “An Angolan woman and her daughter reunite with her husband after spending 17 years in exile. Now strangers, they find common ground in their shared love of dance.”

9) LET THEM ALL TALK- 2020. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “The story of a celebrated author (Meryl Streep) who takes a journey with some old friends (Candice Bergen and Dianne Wiest) to have some fun and heal old wounds. Her nephew (Lucas Hedges) comes along to wrangle the ladies as well as her literary agent (Gemma Chan) who is desperate to find out about her next book.”
