1) AINU MOSIR- Netflix

MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK-

1) AINU MOSIR. 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “Amid a changing world, 14-year-old Kanto — a descendent of Japan’s indigenous Ainu people — finds himself looking for a spiritual connection with his deceased father while reconciling conflicting values and developing his own precepts.”
11/21/20- Few reviews but it sounds good and the few reviews have been positive. TRDB. On Netflix

11/23/20- An interesting movie about an indigenous population in Japan. TRDB.

COMING TO NETFLIX NEXT WEEK ON DISC

1) RETALIATION- 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “Working as a laborer on razing the church where he was molested as a boy, middle-aged Malky gets a jolt when the priest who abused him shows up in the local pub — setting Malky off on a mission of revenge.”
7/24/20- Fair to good reviews. On VUDU and other platforms as well.

2) CRAZY, NOT INSANE- 2020. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Crazy, Not Insane isn’t as narratively disciplined as documentarian Alex Gibney’s best work, but Dorothy Otnow Lewis’ clinical analysis of murderous psychology may prompt unexpected sympathy for the devil.”
11/21/20- Very good reviews for this sure to be controversial documentary. TRDB. On HBO Max

3) CEMETERY- 2019. This documentary is about our relationship with animals. A few reviews are in and are very good. TRDB.ON Mubi

4) BORN TO BE- 2010. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “The emotional and physical journey of surgical transitioning after New York state passed the law that health insurance should cover transgender-related care and services.”
11/21/20- Excellent reviews for this documentary. TRDB. In theaters

5) HILLBILLY ELEGY- 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “Former Marine and current Yale Law student J.D. Vance has worked hard to distance himself from his Appalachian roots. But when a family crisis calls him back to his hometown, he’s forced to come to terms with his complex family history.”
11/21/20- Terrible reviews by the critics and fairly good ones by audiences. Stay tuned. TRDB. On Netflix beginning 11/24

6) COLLECTIVE- 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “In 2015, a Bucharest nightclub fire left 27 dead and more than 180 injured, many of whom later perished from their “nonlethal” injuries. This documentary follows the investigation into what went wrong — ultimately exposing a vast health-care fraud.”
11/22/20- Excellent reviews for this Romanian documentary. TRDB. In theaters and several other streaming platforms

7) SOUND OF METAL- 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “For heavy metal drummer Ruben, the discovery that he’s losing his hearing is an ironic and devastating blow. Finding respite in a group home with roommates who are also deaf, Ruben slowly begins to accept his new reality.”

8) RUN- 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “Confined to a wheelchair and homeschooled by her mother, smart teen Chloe Sherman leads an isolated existence — which starts to fall apart when she suspects that her mom is harboring an ominous secret.”

9) THE TWENTIETH CENTURY– 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “In 1899 Toronto, aspiring young politician Mackenzie King sets his sights on becoming Canada’s prime minister. But his complicated love life and his fetishistic desires may result in his undoing.”
11/22/20- Excellent reviews for this comedy/drama. TRDB. On virtual cinemas

10) THE LAST VERMEER- 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this fact-based drama, a former Dutch resistance fighter investigating the disappearance of art during World War II follows a trail that leads to flamboyant painter Han van Meegeren. But all may not be as clear-cut as it seems.”
11/22/20- Fair reviews from the critics and very good ones from audiences.” TRDB. In theaters

11) SOROS- 2019. Synopsis by IMDB. “Soros follows one of the most influential and controversial figures of our time as he fights against the rising tide of authoritarianism around the world.”
11/22/20- Fair to good reviews for this documentary. TRDB. This movie has a limited showing in a few theaters.

12) TEAM MARCO- 2019. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Young Marco is obsessed with playing video games and hardly leaves the house. But when his grandfather moves in, Marco’s life is turned upside-down and he’s forced…to go play outside. Nonno introduces him to bocce — the world’s oldest game — and to the neighborhood crew of old-school seniors who play daily at the local court. ”
11/24/20- Poor reviews by the critics and excellent ones from audiences. TRDB. On Prime Video and Vudu

14) THE REAL RIGHT STUFF- 2020. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “”The Real Right Stuff” tells the remarkable true story of the nation’s first astronauts, the original Mercury 7, and pulls from hundreds of hours of archival film and radio broadcasts, interviews, home movies and other rare and never-before-seen material to catapult viewers back to the late 1950s.”
