MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK-
1) CHEMICAL HEARTS. 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “When senior Henry Page is named co-editor of his high-school newspaper with mysterious transfer student Grace Town, he soon finds himself falling for the pretty newcomer. But she’s harboring a painful secret.”

8/22/2020- Poor reviews from the critics and very good ones from audiences. TRDB. On Amazon.

8/22/20- I liked the movie. TRDB.

2) AND THEN WE DANCED– 2020- Synopsis by Netflix. “In the conservative domain of Georgian dance, gender roles are rigidly defined. So, when Merab — a dancer training at the National Georgian Ensemble — falls for self-assured newcomer Irakli, Merab finds his world thrown into turmoil.”

2/7/20- Very good reviews for this drama. TRDB.

8/24/20- I liked the movie. Good story and lots of “Georgian” dancing. TRDB.

3) THE CRIMES THAT BIND– 2020. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Desperate and confused, Alicia will do the impossible to keep her son from prison after he’s convicted of trying to murder his ex-wife.”

8/21/20- Mixed reviews. Some critics liked it very much. TRDB.

8/26/20- I liked this movie from Argentina very much. TRDB.

1) VITALINA VARELA– 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “Living apart from her husband, who’s been working in Lisbon for decades, 55-year-old Vitalina Varela finally makes it from Cape Verde to Lisbon — three days after he dies. As she settles his affairs, Vitalina discovers he had a secret life.”

2/22/20. Great reviews for this drama. TRDB.

2) FIRST COW– 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “For soft-spoken Cookie Figowitz, it’s a lonely life cooking for a group of fur trappers in the early 19th century Oregon Territory. But Cookie finds a friend and business partner in Chinese immigrant King Lu.”

3/6/20- Excellent reviews for this drama. TRDB.

3) RETALIATION- 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “Working as a laborer on razing the church where he was molested as a boy, middle-aged Malky gets a jolt when the priest who abused him shows up in the local pub — setting Malky off on a mission of revenge.”

7/24/20- Fair to good reviews.

1) COUP 53– 2019. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Ten years in the making, COUP 53 tells the story of the 1953 the Anglo-American coup d’état that overthrew Iran’s government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and reinstalled the Shah. The CIA/MI6 covert action was called Operation Ajax. It was all about Iran’s oil and who gets to control and benefit from it.”

3) DESERT ONE– Synopsis by Netflix. “On The famously botched 1980 mission to rescue a group of Americans held hostage by Iranian revolutionaries is recounted in this engrossing documentary, which draws on White House audiotapes and a raft of interviews to tell the story.”

4) THE 24th– 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “While World War I rages in Europe, the all-black Twenty-Fourth United States Infantry Regiment is sent to guard construction of Texas’ Camp Logan, where the soldiers soon clash with a violent and abusive Houston police force.”

5) WATCH LIST– 2019. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “WATCH LIST is set against the drug wars in the Philippines. After her husband is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Maria is left to fend for her three children in a police state. As she delves into Manila’s dark underworld of cops, criminals, and drugs to find answers, she realizes the truth is never black and white, and that she must explore her own darkness to keep her family safe.”
