MOVIES I SAW LAST WEEK AT HOME-
1) HERE AND NOW– 2018. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “A social drama told through the eyes of a young immigrant living with his little sister in the slums of the city of Ashdod and struggling to assimilate into Israeli society, who forms a hip-hop band with his three best friends. They believe that music will allow them to make their voices heard, to influence their harsh reality.”

4/23/20- I liked the movie. TRDB. As part of the Mandel virtual Jewish Film Festival.

COMING TO NETFLIX NEXT TUESDAY-

1) TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID– 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “Chronicling the desperate plight of children made orphans by Mexico’s drug wars, this dark fable follows 10-year-old Estrella, who joins a band of street urchins after her mother vanishes, setting off a tragic series of events.”

8/22/19- Excellent reviews for this documentary. TRDB.

2) ORDINARY LOVE– 2020. Synopsis by Netflix. “All the comfortable routines of Joan and Tom’s long and happy marriage are thrown into disarray when Joan is diagnosed with breast cancer. As the couple navigates Joan’s medical treatment, they begin to contemplate the unthinkable.”

8) CIRCUS OF BOOKS– An interesting documentary about a married couple who owned and ran a famous gay porn and adult store in LA. I liked it. On Netflix.

1) TRASH– Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Set in an unnamed Third World country, three kids who make a discovery in a garbage dump soon find themselves running from the cops and trying to right a terrible wrong.”

4/24/20- Synopsis by Netflix. “As three homeless teens struggle to survive in a world of poverty, they discover a leather bag that leads them to believe something suspicious is afoot — and they soon find themselves eluding authorities while attempting to rectify a terrible wrong.” On Netflix and Amazon Prime

2) SAND STORM2016. Synopsis by Netflix. “As Suliman takes another bride, wife Jalila and daughter Layla bridle at the strictures put on their lives, with Jalila seething as she’s forced to host a wedding celebration welcoming the new spouse into the family and Layla pursuing forbidden love.”

9/28/16- I’ve read only 1 review of this Israeli film– by the NY Times and it sounds interesting. TRDB.

12/19/16- Reviews for this film have been excellent and I agree. A well acted story that again explores women’s freedom in Muslim communities. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.
