MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT THE THEATER-
1) WILD ROSE– 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “While single mom — and just paroled ex-con — Rose-Lynn Harlan dreams of becoming a country music star, Nashville is a long way from her Scottish home. But she finds an improbable champion in the well-heeled woman whose house Rose cleans.”

6/21/19- Excellent reviews for this drama. TRDB.

7/1/19- I enjoyed this movie especially the music and the wonderful performance by Jessie Buckley. TRDB.

MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT HOME-
1) THE BOOK THIEF– 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “Young Liesel steals books to teach herself to read, giving her refuge from the horrors of Nazi Germany and her cold foster parents. When not reading, she forms a bond with the Jewish man her adoptive family is hiding in their home.”11/8/13- A really bad review in today’s NY Times and from most critics as well. TRDB.

6/30/19- Really bad and I turned it off. TRDB. Netflix Disc.

2) THE HEIRESSES– 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “In 19th-century Vietnam, 14-year-old May becomes a rich landowner’s third wife, knowing that she must give birth to a son to increase her status. But after she becomes pregnant, dormant desires force her to choose between safety and freedom.”

5/15/19- Very good reviews for this movie. TRDB.

COMING TO NETFLIX NEXT WEEK- July 9
1) GOLDEN EXITS- 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “When middle-aged archivist Nick hires pretty young Australian Naomi as his assistant, already fragile family dynamics are further strained as they work together in the basement, arousing the suspicions of Nick’s wife. But Naomi has eyes for another.”

2/9/17- Fairly good reviews. TRDB.

2) MARIA BY CALLAS– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Taking advantage of personal letters, vintage interviews and previously unseen footage, this extensive documentary recounts the life and career of opera diva Maria Callas, capturing her superlative talent and her turbulent romantic life.”

11/3/18- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

4/24/19- An excellent documentary. I got to know the subject and the singing was great. TRDB. 

3) TRANSIT- 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “As German troops near Paris, concentration camp refugee Georg escapes to Marseille, hoping to board a ship bound for safety by assuming the identity of a dead man whose papers Georg possesses. But things change when he meets a mysterious young woman.”

3/1/19- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

4/23/19- Very well done and I enjoyed it very much. TRDB.

4) 3 FACES– 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “From Iranian director Jafar Panahi — who’s banned from making films in his country — comes this incisive parable that follows a rural girl bent on attending a Tehran drama conservatory despite her hidebound parents’ strong opposition.”

3/8/19- Excellent reviews by the critics and weak ones from audiences. TRDB.

5) HIGH LIFE- 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “In an effort to harness a black hole’s power, a crew of convicts is sent into space. But soon, isolation and an atmosphere of despair lead to conflict and death among the crew, leaving only quiet Monte and his baby daughter to continue the mission.”

4/17/19- A Sci-fi movie that doesn’t sound at all interesting to me but got good reviews from the critics along with poor ones from audiences. TRDB.

COMING TO NETFLIX ON July 16-
1) ASH IS PUREST WHITE– 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “When a young gang attacks her mobster boyfriend, Bin, loyal Qiao uses his illegal gun to save him — landing her in prison for five years. But after she’s released, Qiao finds that Bin has moved on without her, and she sets off to track him down.”

3/15/19- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

2) DOGMAN– 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “In his rundown beach community in Southern Italy, dog groomer Marcello gets along with everyone — even local bully (and ex-boxer) Simone. But when covering up for Simone lands Marcello in jail, he’s itching for vengeance when he’s released.”

4/12/19- Fair to good reviews. TRDB.

4/23/19- Very well done and I enjoyed it very much. TRDB. 

4) LITTLE WOODS– 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “In Little Woods, North Dakota, Ollie once made a living by smuggling in prescription drugs from Canada. About to complete her probation, she’s looking to go straight — but her mom’s death and sister’s pregnancy leave Ollie in desperate need of cash.”

4/19/19- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

OPENED LAST WEEK-
Recommended-
1) YESTERDAY- 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “While he’s still looking for his big break, musician Jack Malik gets hit by a bus during a global blackout. But when he wakes up to find he’s the lone person on Earth who knows of the Beatles and their songbook, Jack has a huge chance at stardom.”

6/25/19- Weak reviews for this comedy/drama but I’ll see it anyway. TRDB.

2) MAIDEN– 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “In 1989, an all-female crew captained by 27-year-old Tracy Edwards entered the Whitbread Round the World Race on the yacht “Maiden.” By finishing second, the distaff sailors permanently transformed the all-male province of deep-water yacht racing.”

6/28/19- Excellent reviews for this documentary. TRDB.

3) THE PLAGIARISTS- 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “As millennial couple Anna and Tyler are on their way home, their car dies, leaving them stranded until an older black man comes to their aid. Before long, he inspires them with his insights — till they learn his words may have been plagiarized.”

6/28/19- Fair to good reviews. I’d definitely see this one. TRDB.

4) MINE 9– 2019. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Two miles into the earth, nine Appalachian coal miners struggle to survive after a methane explosion leaves them with one hour of oxygen.”

6/28/19- More positive than negative but the positives were NOT so good. TRDB.

5) THREE PEAKS– 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “Setting out for a holiday in the Dolomites with his girlfriend and her 8-year-old son, Aaron hopes to forge a stronger bond with the youngster. Instead, their brewing power struggle turns perilous as the boy disappears when the two go for a hike.”

6/28/19- Fair reviews but it sounds interesting. TRDB.

Not Recommended-

1) EUPHORIA– Terrible reviews. This ins NOT the series with the same name that is streaming at present.

2) KILLERS ANONYMOUS– Few reviews so far but they are all very bad.

3) OPHELIA– Awful reviews.

6) ECHO IN THE CANYON–  Jacob Burns, Bethel. Good reviews.

1) THE BIGGEST LITTLE FARM– 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “Filmmaker John Chester and his wife, Molly, long dreamed of trading Los Angeles for a rural life. So, when the couple gets evicted from their apartment thanks to their barking dog, they jump at the chance to start a diversified farm outside the city.”

5/10/19- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

5/20/19- I liked the story very much. Beautiful nature photography as well. TRDB.

1) THE SPY BEHIND HOME PLATE– Good reviews
2) THE FALL OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE– 2019. Synopsis by Netflix. “Though he has a doctorate degree in philosophy, Pierre-Paul Daoust ends up working as a courier — a job he considers beneath him. But it soon nets him two bags of money from a botched heist, putting him in a moral dilemma.”

5/31/19- OK reviews. TRDB.
