MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT THE THEATER-

1) WHAT THEY HAD– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “When her mother wanders into a snowstorm on Christmas Eve, Bridget responds to her brother’s call for help by returning to her hometown, where the siblings face the unenviable task of persuading their dad to put Mom in a care home.”

10/19/18- Very good  reviews for this drama. TRDB.

11/11/18- An excellent drama with wonderful acting and a perceptive look at a good family dealing with a real crisis. TRDB.

2) WILDLIFE– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “The emotional perils of adolescence are already challenging enough for Joe Brinson, but after his parents’ move to Montana causes friction between them, Joe begins to realize that his family is dissolving in front of him.”

10/19/18- Excellent reviews by the critics and poor ones from audiences. TRDB.

11/12/18- I have to say that I was a bit disappointed in this movie. Some good acting by Mulligan but I found some of the screenplay hard to take seriously. TRDB.

1) CLAIRE’S CAMERA– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “While attending Cannes, film sales agent Man-hee is abruptly fired by her jealous boss. But when Man-hee meets Parisian teacher Claire, who takes a picture of her on the beach, the two bond — and Man-hee discovers the transformative power of photos.”

3/8/18- Fairly good reviews and I love Huppert. TRDB.

11/7/18- I enjoyed this movie– it was unique. TRDB. Netflix Disc.

2) SOLLERS POINT– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Out of prison but under house arrest, petty criminal Keith is living at his dad’s Baltimore house while waiting to rejoin the community. But as Keith tries to get on the right track, past connections keep drawing him back to his former life.”

5/18/18- Very good reviews for this drama. TRDB.

11/12/18- I liked the movie– good but not exceptional. TRDB. Netflix Disc.

1) BLINDSPOTTING– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “With three days left in his yearlong probation, ex-con Collin is working at a moving company with his childhood best pal and watching the time tick down when he witnesses a police shooting that jeopardizes his freedom and the friendship.”

7/19/18- Very good reviews for this drama. TRDB.

2) SKATE KITCHEN– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Featuring a group of real-life skateboarders performing gravity-defying acrobatics, this immersive drama follows lonely Long Island teen Camille, whose life is transformed when she becomes part of a tight-knit band of urban female skateboarders.”

Recommended-

1) THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS– 2018. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a six-part Western anthology film, a series of tales about the American frontier told through the unique and incomparable voice of Joel and Ethan Coen. Each chapter tells a distinct story about the American West.”

11/9/18- Excellent reviews by the critics and very good ones by audiences. TRDB.

2) NUMBER 37- 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this South African tribute to “Rear Window,” small-time crook Randal Hendricks is confined to a wheelchair and in hock to a loan shark when he witnesses a neighbor slay a cop. Suddenly, Randal sees a way to get the cash he desperately needs.”

11/9/18- I have my doubts after reading the synopsis but reviews were really great. TRDB.

3) WEIGHTLESS- 2018. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. ” A haunting drama of a man, living on the margins of society, who suddenly finds himself responsible for a ten year-old son whom he hasn’t seen since infancy. An alienated loner who can barely take care of himself, he struggles to forge a relationship with this lonely, at-risk child.”

11/9/18- Mixed reviews at best. TRDB.

4) CHEF FLYNN– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this compelling documentary, filmmaker Cameron Yates trains his lens on the bourgeoning career of self-taught chef Flynn McGarry, a 19-year-old culinary megastar navigating his sudden celebrity and family drama.”

11/9/18-  Mostly good reviews. TRDB.

5) EL ANGEL– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this riveting biopic, baby-faced teen Carlos Puch becomes Argentina’s most notorious serial killer, beginning his criminal career by joining with a schoolmate in a robbery and murder spree that makes Puch a media sensation.”

11/9/18- Fair reviews. TRDB.

6) INFINITE FOOTBALL– 2018. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “After fracturing his fibula in a 1987 game, former Romanian soccer star and current bureaucrat Lauren?iu Ginghin? now dreams of radically revising his beloved sport’s rules to reduce injuries and, in turn, revolutionize it.”

11/9/18- Excellent reviews for this documentary. TRDB.

7) IN A RELATIONSHIP– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Though Hallie and Owen can’t agree on how many years they’ve been a couple, they agree that it’s time for a break when Owen balks at the idea of living together. Meanwhile, new love blooms between Owen’s best friend and Hallie’s heartbreaker cousin.”

11/9/18- Fair reviews but it sounded interesting to me.  TRDB.

8) THE LONG DUMB ROAD– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “A chance meeting of two men at turning points in their lives leads to a chaotic but enlightening road trip as young Nathan — on his way to a Los Angeles art school — is taken out of his comfort zone by boozy mechanic Richard.”

11/9/18- Reviews were  mixed in general but it sounded interesting enough to include this as a recommendation. TRDB.

Not Recommended–

1) THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Tech prodigy Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist join forces once again in an effort to unwind a complex tangle of corruption and cybercrime — a task that grows increasingly dangerous as they unearth a world of secrets.”

11/9/18- Poor reviews from critics and audiences. TRDB.

2) PIMP– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “As she struggles to take care of her mom, female pimp Wednesday hopes for a better life with her girlfriend, Nikki — who starts turning tricks to help out. But the couple faces trouble when Wednesday gets caught in a dangerous game with a male pimp.”

11/9/18- Just 4 reviews so far. Two are outright poor and the other two are marginally OK. TRDB.

3) OUTLAW KING– 2018. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “OUTLAW KING tells the untold, true story of Robert the Bruce who transforms from defeated nobleman to outlaw hero during the oppressive occupation of medieval Scotland by Edward I of England.”

2) STUDIO 54- 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “This riveting documentary charts the rise and fall of New York City’s Studio 54, the nightclub of choice for countless celebrities in the late 1970s. But the venue’s three years of glory came to an end when its founders were indicted for tax evasion.”
