MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT THE THEATER-
1) COLETTE– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this engaging biopic, French writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette emerges as a force to be reckoned with after the novels she’s penned under her husband’s name garner fame for him but not for her, inspiring her to forge her own path.”

9/19/18- Excellent reviews for this movie. It sounds somewhat like “The Wife” that is showing currently. TRDB.

9/28/18- I liked this period movie. Great acting and a very interesting story.  TRDB.

MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT HOME-
1) THE GUARDIANS– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this ensemble drama set in rural France, the women of the Paridier farm are left to run it by themselves while their men are off fighting in World War I. But things become complicated with the arrival of American troops.’

5/4/18- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

10/1/18- This movie is slow and steady as it depicts a single family in France over a few decades. Excellent acting and development of the characters. TRDB. Netflix Disc.

2) BEIRUT- 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In 1972, a tragedy forces U.S. envoy Mason Skiles to abandon his post in Beirut. A decade later, the ex-diplomat finds himself back in the same city — this time to help save the life of the colleague and friend he left behind.”

4/10/18- Very good reviews in general– the NY Times did not like it. TRDB.

10/1/18- The NY Times did not like this movie and neither did I!!! Trite and boring I nearly fell asleep watching. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

COMING TO NETFLIX NEXT TUESDAY, OCT. 9-
1) ANGELS WEAR WHITE– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “A seaside motel’s sleepy façade hides the danger within for two schoolgirls assaulted there by a high-level police officer — and for the teenager working the reception desk who observes the attack on surveillance video but is afraid to come forward.”

5/3/18- Very good reviews. TRDB.

2) EIGHTH GRADE– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “As Kayla Day begins the last week of a difficult year in eighth grade, the emotional perils of adolescence swirl around her. Though she’s comfortable with her online persona, the looming social challenges of high school terrify her.”

7/12/18- Great reviews!!! Friends thought it was so-so. TRDB.

3) DON’T WORRY, HE WON’T GET FAR ON FOOT– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “When a car accident leaves John Callahan confined to a wheelchair at age 21, the Oregon native begins drawing as physical therapy. Before long, a dark comedic vision emerges — and a career as a cartoonist follows.”

7/13/18- Fairly good reviews from the critics and excellent reviews from audiences. TRDB.

4) A PRAYER BEFORE DAWN– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this fact-based drama, boxer Billy Moore travels to Thailand to start a new life but quickly lapses back into old habits that land him in prison. To survive the ordeal, he must learn the deadly sport of Muay Thai boxing.”

8/10/18- Excellent reviews by both audiences and critics. TRDB.

1) THE SEAGULL– I saw it and did not care for it
2) CRUISE– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Growing up in the 1980s, young New Yorker Gio Fortunato is leading a footloose and fancy-free life focused on easy women and fast cars — until a Jewish girl from Long Island attracts his attention.”

9/28/18- The premise alone sounds interesting but this movie has received poor reviews. I would, however, give it a try. TRDB.

3) TEA WITH THE DAMES– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Acclaimed actresses Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright and Eileen Atkins — all Dames of the British Empire — gather for a captivating conversation that includes reminiscences, gossip and untold tales about their stage and film careers.”

9/21/18- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

1) CHAPPAQUIDDICK- The movie was fair but good for historical value

3) FIRST REFORMED– I enjoyed the movie

Recommended-
1) FREE SOLO– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this “cliff-hanging” documentary, rock climber Alex Honnold prepares for and undertakes the most daunting challenge of his life: becoming the first person to free-solo climb (without ropes or safety gear) the face of Yosemite’s El Capitan.”

9/29/18- Excellent reviews and I look forward to seeing this movie. TRDB.

2) THE OLD MAN & THE GUN– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Based on the true-life exploits of bank robber Forrest Tucker, this serio-comic tale recounts his daring escape from prison at age 70 and the long string of heists that preceded the bandit’s final arrest at age 78.”

9/29/18- Good early reviews but I saw the trailer and it looked stupid. I’ll probably see it on disc. or by streaming. TRDB.

3) ALL ABOUT NINA– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “As fearless as she is onstage, edgy stand-up comic Nina Geld is a mess when it comes to her personal life. But after Nina moves to Los Angeles, she meets quiet contractor Rafe, who promptly upends most of her assumptions about life.”

9/28/18- Very good reviews. The NY Times did not like it. TRDB.

4) MONSTERS AND MEN– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Depicting the aftermath when a white police officer shoots an unarmed black man, this timely drama intertwines the stories of the onlooker who filmed the act, a conflicted African-American cop and a young athlete turned into an activist by the event.”

9/28/18- Very good reviews. TRDB.

9/28/18- The premise alone sounds interesting but this movie has received poor reviews. Still, I’d give it a try. TRDB.

6) MATANGI/MAYA/M.I.A.- 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Culled from more than two decades of film — including a treasure trove of personal footage — this insightful documentary paints a compelling portrait of provocative pop star M.I.A., who continues to defy conventions.”

7) SCAFFOLDING- 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Nearing the end of his high school days, volatile 17-year-old Asher faces a choice about his future: either work in his father’s scaffolding business or follow the advice of an inspiring teacher who has awakened Asher to other possibilities.”

9/28/18- Fair reviews at best but the reviews sounded interesting to me. TRDB.

8) HOLD THE DARK- 2018. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Retired naturalist and wolf expert Russell Core  journeys to the edge of civilization in northern Alaska at the pleading of Medora Slone , a young mother whose son was killed by a pack of wolves. As Core attempts to help Medora track down the wolves who took her son, a strange and dangerous relationship develops between the two lonely souls.”

9/28/18- Fair to good reviews in general. TRDB.

9) BLACK ’47– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “After fighting for the British Empire in Afghanistan, an Irish Ranger deserts his post to return home in 1847. Shocked by the mass starvation of his people wrought by the potato blight, he sets out to exact revenge on those he considers at fault.”

10) 306 HOLLYWOOD– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “As siblings Elan and Jonathan Bogarín begin dismantling their deceased grandmother’s household, they discover that her soul and her story live on in the objects she left behind, as chronicled in this compelling documentary.”

This movie was supposed to open at Jacob Burns also this week but it in NOT on their website as of now. It is showing at the Clearview 100.

2) A STAR IS BORN– Bethel, Danbury. 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In a role previously played by Janet Gaynor, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand, Lady Gaga has big shoes to fill in this third remake of the classic tale about a rising star whose career eclipses that of her famous mentor.”

9/7/18- Terrific reviews– the title turned me off at first. TRDB.

2) PICK OF THE LITTER– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “This engaging documentary follows the two-year progress of five pooches trained from puppyhood to serve as guide dogs for the blind. The film also looks at the human devotion needed to help the canines learn a complex set of behavioral skills.

2) NO DATE NO SIGNATURE– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “When forensic pathologist Kaveh Nariman injures a young boy in a vehicle mishap, his father declines Kaveh’s offer of medical assistance. But after the child turns up dead days later, seemingly from botulism, Kaveh’s conscience begins to gnaw at him.”

10/3/18- Excellent reviews for this Iranian drama. TRDB.
