MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT THE THEATER-
1) 24 FRAMES– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Dispensing with a narrative structure, this carefully crafted last work of Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami consists of 24 four-and-a-half-minute segments, each inspired by one of many still photos he shot over the years.”

2/2/18- Excellent views for this drama that sounds more like a documentary to me. TRDB.

4/14/18- Extremely creative and definitely worth seeing. I could have done with 16 frames. TRDB.

MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT HOME-
1) GOD’S OWN COUNTRY– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “With his father paralyzed, 24-year-old Johnny Saxby has to tend the family’s sheep farm, but he doesn’t have to like it. His attitude changes, however, when he finds a friend and lover in the Romanian worker hired to help during the lambing season.”

11/15/17- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

4/15/18- To begin with there are no subtitles and there should be. What I could understand I found boring and turned it off. TRDB. Netflix Disc.

COMING TO NETFLIX NEXT TUESDAY, APRIL 24-
1) BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Remembered as one of the most ravishing stars of her day, screen legend Hedy Lamarr had brains and beauty — which are on full display in this illuminating documentary that spotlights her World War II-era coinvention of wireless communication forms.”

3/17/18- An excellent documentary. Who knew about these other aspect of Ms. Lamarr? TRDB.

2) HOSTILES– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Set in 1892, this engrossing Western depicts the animosity between a U.S. Army captain and a Cheyenne war chief whose family the cavalry is escorting back to their Montana homeland — a journey that proves long and perilous for both sides.”

12/22/17- Fair reviews from the critics and better ones from audiences. Sounds good to me. TRDB.

3) FILM STARS DON’T DIE IN LIVERPOOL–  2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Movie star Gloria Grahame’s intense affair with much younger actor Peter Turner springs back to life via flashbacks when he comes to the aid of the ailing Grahame, who spends her final days with her former lover while battling breast cancer.”

12/29/17- Reviews were just OK but there were some very good ones as well. TRDB.

4) THE FINAL YEAR– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Enjoying rare access to Barack Obama and some of his top aides during the last year of his presidency, filmmaker Greg Barker captures the urgency of White House foreign policy experts as they hasten to cement Obama’s global legacy.”

1/19/17- Very good reviews from the critics and poor ones from audiences. TRDB.

5) HAVE A NICE DAY– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Satirizing the overpowering effects of greed on humans of every stripe, this darkly comic animated tale follows a host of dodgy characters racing to get their mitts on a fortune in cash stolen from a mobster.”

OPENED LAST FRIDAY, APRIL 13-
1) JEANNETTE: THE CHILDHOOD OF JOAN OF ARC– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Joan of Arc’s early life receives a rock ‘n’ roll treatment in this experimental musical that centers on the years — beginning at age 8 — leading up to the visions that sparked her fervent crusade to save France from British tyranny.”

4/12/18- Very good reviews by the critics but terrible ones from audiences. TRDB.

2) THE JUDGE– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “By following Palestinian Kholoud Al-Faqih — the first female judge in a Middle East Sharia law court — as she goes about her days, this illuminating documentary provides a riveting look at her ongoing fight to attain justice for women.”

4/12/18- Excellent reviews for this documentary. TRDB.

3) HITTLER’S HOLLYWOOD– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Between 1933 and 1945, Germany produced more than 1,000 films, only a few of them openly Nazi propaganda. This insightful documentary examines how stereotypes of the enemy and fascist ideology were seeded in audiences’ psyches via the cinema.”

4) ZAMA– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In the late 18th century, Magistrate Don Diego de Zama languishes in a regional office of the Spanish crown, awaiting a transfer to the city where his family lives. But as years pass and nothing happens, he joins a quest to pursue a notorious bandit.”

5) THE RIDER– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “When Brady Blackburn’s singular focus on being a professional rodeo rider ends with a severe head injury sustained in competition, he suddenly faces the prospect of an entirely different life, with no inkling of how to begin.”

6) COME SUNDAY– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this compelling drama, evangelist Carlton Pearson incites controversy among his peers and thousands of adherents when he shares his personal epiphany that there is no hell and that every person on Earth has already been saved.”

7) SGT. STUBBY: AN AMERICAN HERO– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this animated tale, a stray canine with a stumpy tale wanders into the midst of an infantry regiment as the soldiers are training to enter World War I. After they adopt the dog — and name him Stubby — he accompanies his new comrades into battle.”

1) LIVES WELL LIVED– Jacob Burns. 2018. Synopsis  by Rotten Tomatoes. “As people age, they carry with them a storehouse of memories and wisdom acquired through the years. This revelatory documentary looks at the achievements, adversities, loves and losses of 40 people aged 75 and older.”

2) CHAPPAQUIDDICK- Good reviews but there are questions of historical accuracy
3) FINDING YOUR FEETGood reviews by the critics and weak ones from audiences.
4) THE LAST SUIT– An excellent movie
5) ITZHAK– I liked this documentary about Itzhak Perlman very much
6) BOMBSHELL- THE HEDY LAMARR STORY– A very good documentary.
C) THE STONZEK THEATER AT THE LAKE WORTH PLAYHOUSE
1) LEANING INTO THE WIND– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy’s works are ephemeral, designed to weather along with the landscapes in which they’re placed. This well-crafted documentary follows Goldsworthy across the globe as he constructs his fragile and diverse creations.”

3/9/18- Great reviews. TRDB.

2) LOVE & BANANAS- AN ELEPHANT STORY– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In a dramatic chapter in the struggle to rescue trekking Asian elephants, noted conservationist Lek Chailert leads a team on a 480-mile journey to save 70-year-old Noi Na, a nearly blind pachyderm that has labored for humans for decades.”

4/18/18- I’ve seen just 1 review and it was very positive. TRDB.
