MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT THE THEATER-
1) ITZHAK– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Though Itzhak Perlman is widely regarded as the finest violinist of his time, his journey has been far from easy. This affectionate documentary recounts his story through conversations with Perlman, his friends, family and colleagues.”

MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT HOME-
1) TOM OF FINLAND– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “When Touko Laaksonen returns to his native Finland after World War II, he begins creating the frank homoerotic drawings that will eventually bring him global fame — despite living in an environment where homosexuality is a criminal offense.”

10/15/17- Fairly good reviews. TRDB.

3/31/18- I liked the movie but it was way too slow at times and often lacked momentum. TRDB. Netflix Disc.

2) TAKE EVERY WAVE: THE LIFE OF LAIRD HAMILTON– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Turning to the mammoth waves of Oahu’s north shore to escape an abusive home, Laird Hamilton has made surfing innovation his life’s work. With a winter surf season on Kauai as the backdrop, this in-depth documentary charts his story.”

10/6/17- Great reviews. TRDB.

4/4/18- I guess you need to have some interest in this topic in order to enjoy. I definitely did not. I found it repetitive and boring.  TRDB. Netflix Disc.

1) FOR AHKEM– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Set against the backdrop of the Ferguson events, this documentary follows Missouri teen Daje Shelton, whose fighting lands her at an alternative school. Vowing to do better, she refuses to let the tough world she grew up in define her or her future.”

2) ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD– Just so-so in my book. Great Plummer
3) PHANTOM THREAD– I liked it but not as much as others did
4) MOLLY’S GAME- Very good reviews- looking forward to getting this movie

OPENED LAST FRIDAY-
1) GEMINI– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “When personal assistant Jill LeBeau finds her boss, rising actress Heather Anderson, shot to death in her own home, Jill becomes the prime suspect in a murder mystery and the target of Hollywood gossip about the women’s close relationship.”

3/30/18- Good overall reviews from the critics but none were excellent. Audiences were less impressed. TRDB.

2) PERSONAL PROBLEMS– 2018. Here’s what Glenn Kenny wrote for the NY Times. “For all its rough edges, “Personal Problems” retains a vitality and an integrity that practically bounds off the screen.”

3) THE CHINA HUSTLE– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “While the 2008 financial crash offered painful lessons to Wall Street investors, similar accounting chicanery by some Chinese-based companies is leading to the same results. This incisive documentary looks at the major players (and crooks) involved.”

4) OUTSIDE IN– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Life in the small town where he grew up is a far cry from what Chris remembers when he returns home after a 20-year stint in prison. Struggling to adjust, he turns to the one person who never gave up on him: his high school English teacher, Carol.”

5) AFTER LOUIE– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “After experiencing the grim early years of the AIDS epidemic and its shattering effects, Sam Cooper feels alienated from modern gay culture and politics — until the far younger Braeden Devries revitalizes Sam’s life and helps him deal with the past.”

6) FINDING YOUR FEET– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Smugly confident, Sandra Abbott gets a shock when she learns that her longtime husband is sleeping with her best friend. Taking refuge with her free-spirited sister, Sandra grudgingly tags along to a dance class — where she experiences an awakening.”

7) THE GARDENER– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Showcasing the sublime landscapes of Les Quatre Vents, a 20-acre private garden in Quebec created by horticulturist Frank Cabot, this sumptuous documentary represents the first visit to the garden by a film crew since it opened decades earlier.”

8) THE LAST MOVIE STAR– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Aging actor Vic Edwards is no longer the toast of Hollywood, but he hasn’t lost his desire for the spotlight and agrees to accept an award at a film festival. When he finds it’s a low-rent affair, he slips away and begins a journey into his past.”

9) LOVE AFTER LOVE– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “An introspective examination of grief, this ensemble drama focuses on a family struggling to cope in the wake of the patriarch’s death, as their anger and inner anguish build up stress on their relationships.”

Synopsis by Netflix. “In this historical drama, the car accident that doomed Ted Kennedy’s presidential ambitions and resulted in the drowning death of 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne gets a fresh look, focusing on the cover-up that followed the crash.”

4) A QUIET PLACE– Danbury. 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “As a married couple and their son are enjoying their peaceful existence on a farm, a malevolent supernatural entity takes up residence in their home, forcing the family into a horrific and extended fight for their lives.”

4/4/18- Excellent reviews for this bloody horror movie. Not my kind of movie by a longshot. TRDB.

2) CLAIRE’S CAMERA– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “While attending Cannes, film sales agent Man-hee is abruptly fired by her jealous boss. But when Man-hee meets Parisian teacher Claire, who takes a picture of her on the beach, the two bond — and Man-hee discovers the transformative power of photos.”
