MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT THE THEATER-
1) THE POST– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “When the “Washington Post” agrees to publish the leaked Pentagon Papers — which point to a secret escalation of the Vietnam War — the Nixon administration tries to block publication, setting off an epic legal and political battle.”

12/22/17- Very good reviews by the critics and just fair ones by audiences. TRDB 

1/15/18- I found the movie enjoyable primarily as a history lesson– otherwise I would call it just OK. TRDB.

MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT HOME-
1) THE FORGOTTEN REFUGEES– 2005.

This documentary is about the treatment and expulsion of Jews from Middle East countries through the years and is well worth seeing if you can get a copy.

I liked it very much. TRDB. At the Boca Raton Synagogue.

These were included in last week’s addition,
1) THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE- 2016. Synopsis by Netflix. “This empathetic documentary chronicles the experiences of three U.S. military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder following their service in Iraq — focusing on their struggle to reintegrate with the civilian world.”

10/28/16- An excellent review for this documentary in today’s NY Times. There may be a drama out there with the same name so make sure it’s the documentary that you look for. TRDB.

2) THE WOMAN WHO LEFT– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “After serving 30 years for a crime she didn’t commit, Horacia Somorostro is freed when another inmate admits to framing her at the behest of Rodrigo Trinidad, Horacia’s ex-lover. Returning to her hometown, she quietly plots her revenge on Rodrigo.”

5/19/17- Very good reviews. TRDB.

3) RED TREES– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Documentarian Marina Willer — a descendant of one of 12 Jewish families to survive the Nazi occupation of Prague (thanks to her granddad’s ability to make citric acid) — chronicles her family’s life during wartime and their immigration to Brazil.”

9/20/17- Fair reviews at best. TRDB.

4) THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEAR– 2017. “In this tale of horror based on a Euripides tragedy, a surgeon begins to regret his decision to help a troubled teenage boy after being drawn ever-deeper into the dramas revolving around the young man’s dysfunctional family.”

10/20/17- Wildly different reviews– definitely more positive than negative but I won’t see this horror movie. TRDB.

5) FELICITE- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “A nightclub chanteuse and single mother, independent-minded Félicité finds her mettle tested when her 14-year-old son is hurt in a motorcycle crash, forcing her to bargain and beg to raise enough money to pay for his operation.”

Recommended-

1) LOVER FOR A DAY– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “In the wake of a bad breakup, Jeanne lands at her father’s home, where she’s surprised to find his new girlfriend, Ariane, already ensconced. But Jeanne is even more surprised (and not pleasantly) to learn that she and Ariane are the same age.”

1/12/18- Fairly good reviews with a couple of poor ones thrown in. TRDB.

2) SATURDAY CHURCH– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “With his dad dead and his mom trying to raise two boys, 14-year-old Ulysses is now the man of the house. Trouble is, he wants to be a woman. But after he finds a place with LGBT kids through a church program, his conservative aunt becomes suspicious.”

1/12/18- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

3) DIM THE FLUORESCENTS– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Neither aspiring actress Audrey nor her best friend, budding playwright Lillian, are getting far in their careers, so they take a job giving role-playing demonstrations at corporate training sessions. But the pressure to succeed may tear them apart.”

4) THE INSULT– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “On a Beirut street undergoing repairs, a Lebanese Christian and a Palestinian refugee butt heads. When an insult is hurled, they end up in court, and the case triggers a nationwide debate that opens old wounds and could erupt into a political crisis.”

5) VAZANTE- 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “When slave trader António loses his wife to childbirth, he soon weds 12-year-old Beatriz. Resuming his travels, he leaves her with a houseful of slaves in the remote Diamantina Mountains, where she commits an offense that has shocking repercussions.”

1/12/18- Good reviews by the critics and excellent ones by audiences. TRDB.

6) ABE AND PHIL’S LAST POKER GAME– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “After moving into a nursing home with his invalid wife, Abe Mandelbaum forms a bond with womanizing gambler Phil Nicoletti. But their friendship is put to the test when they both claim to be the father of a young nurse looking for her biological dad.”

7) MY ART– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Artist Ellie Shine has a secure job, good friends and a loyal canine companion, but what she doesn’t have is art-world recognition. So, when a pal offers her summer place to Ellie, she uses the occasion to re-create herself and her artistic persona.”

8) WHAT LIES UPSTREAM– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Spelling out in dire fashion the ongoing dangers of pollution in America’s drinking water supply, documentarian Cullen Hoback examines public-health threats in Michigan and West Virginia, and exposes the collusion between government and industry.”

Not Recommended

1) THE COMMUTER– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Insurance salesman Michael Woolrich’s quiet train ride home turns into a terrifying situation when a mysterious woman forces him to find a specific passenger before the last stop, entangling Woolrich in a deadly conspiracy.”

1/9/18- Weak reviews. TRDB.

2) HUMOR ME– 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Dumped by his wife and forgotten by audiences, playwright Nate Kroll has nobody to turn to except Dad, which is how Nate ends up sleeping on his father’s sofa and helping some women from his retirement community mount a production of “The Mikado.”

3) MY COFFEE WITH JEWISH FRIENDS– 2018. One reviewer said this about the movie- “Thought-provoking conversations filmed with minimal production value.”

1/12/18- I saw 4 reviews and all 4 were positive but none were exceptional. TRDB.

Synopsis by Netflix. “Set in 1950s London, this behind-the-scenes drama centers on the high-stakes world of couture as a headstrong dressmaker sees his career catapult to the next level when members of the royal family begin commissioning his designs.”

12/29/17- Very good reviews including a few excellent ones. TRDB.

2) CALL ME BY YOUR NAME– Jacob Burns, Danbury, Clearview 100.  I liked it

3) DARKEST HOUR– Jacob Burns, Bethel, Danbury, Clearview 100. I liked it but not as much as others have. Great acting.

4) THREE BILLBOARDS– Clearview 100. I enjoyed the movie– but not as much as others

5) THE POST– Jacob Burns, Bethel, Danbury. I liked it even though Hollywood could not keep its hands off this movie

6) THE SHAPE OF WATER– Jacob Burns, Danbury. Sounds and looks weird but lots of friends have liked it

7) LADY BIRD– Danbury. I liked this movie very much

A) THE MOVIES OF LAKE WORTH-

1) PHANTOM THREAD– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Set in 1950s London, this behind-the-scenes drama centers on the high-stakes world of couture as a headstrong dressmaker sees his career catapult to the next level when members of the royal family begin commissioning his designs.”

12/29/17- Very good reviews including a few excellent ones. TRDB.

2) CALL ME BY YOUR NAME– I liked it.

3) THE POST- I liked  especially the historical value but I did not think that it was a great movie.

4) MOLLY’S GAME– Good reviews.

5) DARKEST HOUR– I liked it but did not love it as others have.

6) THE SHAPE OF WATER– Haven’t seen it yet- it looks weird but friends have liked it.

7) THREE BILLBORDS– I enjoyed this movie.

1) THE FLORIDA PROJECT– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Living within sight of Disney World’s glittering attractions, the children of families residing in tacky motels near the megapark create their own magical world together, led by the spirited 6-year-old Moonee.

10/6/17- Excellent reviews by the critics and very good ones by audiences. TRDB.

2) TANGERINE– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Back on the streets on Christmas Eve after serving a month in jail, transgender prostitute Sin-Dee Rella launches a vengeful search across Los Angeles for her unfaithful pimp boyfriend, Chester, and his new squeeze, Dinah..”

7/10/15- Excellent reviews from the critics and very good reviews from audiences. TRDB.

8/10/15- When I saw this movie there was only 1 other person in the theater and he walked out. The film was extremely creative and very well acted and like nothing you’ve seen before. Still, it was weird and I can not in good conscience recommend this film. TRDB. 

D) THE LIVING ROOM THEATERS AT FAU IN BOCA RATON

1) HAPPY END– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Living in Northern France near Calais, the well-to-do Laurent family is all-but oblivious to the crisis unfolding a few miles away at the “Calais Jungle,” where thousands of migrants and refugees huddle in misery as they face uncertain futures.”

12/22/17- Fair reviews from  critics and audiences alike. Sounds good to me and I like Isabel Hupert who stars. TRDB.
