MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT THE THEATER-
1)
DARKEST HOUR- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Winston Churchill’s stirring defiance of the Nazi threat is the focus of this historical drama that depicts his fearless refusal to surrender Britain to Adolf Hitler and his relentless army during World War II’s early days.”
11/23/17- Fairly good reviews with some notable poor ones. Audience reviews were fair. TRDB.
12/31/17- I was disappointed with this movie. Friends told me it was excellent. I found the historical portions interesting but the movie Hollywoodish and geared to earn an Academy Award for its star. TRDB.

AMNESIA– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “After arriving on the island of Ibiza hoping to land a DJ gig at a popular dance club, young German Jo meets an enigmatic older woman named Martha — who conceals her German nationality for reasons involving their country’s past.”

12/29/17- I enjoyed this movie very much. TRDB. Netflix Streaming
2) INGRID GOES WEST– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “After getting out of a mental hospital, Ingrid Thorburn becomes fixated on making friends with Instagram star Taylor Sloane, going to great lengths to get close to her. But when Taylor’s brother enters the picture, Ingrid’s behavior turns dangerous.”
8/11/17- Very good reviews by critics and audiences alike. TRDB.
1/2/18- I really enjoyed this movie. TRDB. Netflix Disc.

WOODPECKERS– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “When Julián arrives at Najayo Prison, a big shot inmate enlists him to communicate via sign language with his lover, Yanelly, who’s locked up at a women’s compound 150 yards away. But before long, an attraction develops between Yanelly and Julián.”
9/15/17- Good reviews from the critics and excellent ones from audiences. TRDB.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “In 1973, Billie Jean King, the world’s No. 2 female tennis player, took on 55-year-old ex-champ Bobby Riggs in a match hyped as the Battle of the Sexes. This sports dramedy delves into the battles being played out in their lives beyond the spotlight.”
9/22/17- Very good reviews by the critics and 50/50 by audiences. TRDB.
10/1/17- I liked the movie– it was much more than a tennis match. TRDB.

MARK FELT: THE MAN WHO BROUGHT DOWN THE WHITE HOUSE– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “This fact-based biopic charts the life of FBI informant Mark Felt, aka “Deep Throat” — the principal unnamed source for reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as they begin writing exposés that will blow the lid off the Watergate scandal.”
9/29/17- Awful reviews but it might be at least somewhat interesting to people who lived through this scandal. TRDB.

DINA– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Outspoken suburbanite Dina Buno and her fiancé, Scott Levin — a Walmart greeter — are crazy about each other. But their romance undergoes challenges as insecurities and anxieties begin bubbling to the surface after the two move in together.”
10/6/17- Uniformly excellent reviews for this documentary. TRDB.

HOLLOW IN THE LAND– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “A year after Alison Miller’s dad is jailed for murder, her brother vanishes and is accused of murder when a corpse turns up in a trailer park. Now, Alison is determined to find her sibling and prove his innocence despite the evidence against him.”
12/7/17- Just 5 reviews noted and 4 out of the 5 are very good. TRDB.

MARSHALL– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Recounting an early case of attorney Thurgood Marshall — who would later become the first African-American Supreme Court justice — this riveting drama depicts his defense of a black chauffeur accused of sexual assault.”

2) PHANTOM THREAD– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Set in 1950s London, this behind-the-scenes drama centers on the high-stakes world of couture as a headstrong dressmaker sees his career catapult to the next level when members of the royal family begin commissioning his designs.”

3) FILM STARS DON’T DIE IN LIVERPOOL– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Movie star Gloria Grahame’s intense affair with much younger actor Peter Turner springs back to life via flashbacks when he comes to the aid of the ailing Grahame, who spends her final days with her former lover while battling breast cancer.”
