MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT THE THEATER-
1)
WONDER WHEEL– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Venerated director Woody Allen looks back to the New York City of his youth in this 1950s drama set amid the surroundings of Coney Island amusement park, where love, greed, betrayal and youthful dreams coalesce.”
11/30/17- Awful reviews but I never miss a new Woody. TRDB.
12/17/17- With all of the negative reviews I still enjoyed the movie. I found the plot interesting, if convoluted, and the acting very good as well. TRDB.

1)
VICEROY’S HOUSE– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “An epic chapter in the history of the British Empire is recounted in this period drama that follows the last viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten, as he oversees the nation’s seismic transition to independence in 1947.”
9/1/17- Mixed reviews– more up than down. TRDB.
12/16/17- I did not care one hoot for it and I turned it off. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.
2) LOGAN LUCKY– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Amping up the adrenaline with film shot during the real race, this pedal-to the-metal comedy revolves around an impossible heist attempted by two brothers during the Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina.”
8/16/17- Very good reviews for this crime caper movie. TRDB.
12/16/17- I really had trouble getting into this heist caper and I have to wonder where these critics are coming from. TRDB. Netflix Disc.

1)
AQUARIUS– 2016. Synopsis by Netflix. “As the last remaining occupant of an old building in Recife, Brazil, 65-year-old Clara is determined to hang on to the home that has defined her life — despite generous offers from a developer who wants to clear the site for new construction.”
10/14/16- Excellent reviews by the critics and fairly good ones by audiences. TRDB.
11/5/16- I enjoyed this movie from Brazil very much!! TRDB.

DUNKIRK– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “This action-thriller chronicles the epic battle to evacuate more than 300,000 Allied soldiers who find themselves trapped on the beaches of Northern France after the country falls to the Third Reich in 1940.”

THE BALLAD OF LEFTY BROWN– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “As his boss, Eddie Johnson, prepares to become a Montana senator, loyal Lefty Brown prepares to be the man in charge for the first time in his life. But his plans to run Eddie’s ranch are upended when Eddie is murdered — and now Lefty wants revenge.”

2) KILLING FOR LOVE– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “This engrossing look at a 1985 double homicide focuses on bringing to justice the killers of a Lynchburg, Virginia, husband and wife as suspicions fall on the wealthy couple’s daughter when she and her boyfriend suddenly flee abroad.”
12/15/17- Excellent reviews all around for this documentary. TRDB.
3) THE RAPE OF RECY TAYLOR– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Racial hatred’s savage roots were on display in Recy Taylor’s gang rape by six white boys in 1944 Alabama. When she identified her attackers despite the danger to herself and her family, the case became a seminal moment in the civil rights movement.”

4) SOUFRA– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Mariam Shaar has spent her life in a Lebanese refugee camp, but that hasn’t limited her ambitions: Enlisting the aid of fellow refugees from Syria, Iraq and Palestine, Shaar sets about opening a catering business, as chronicled in this documentary.”

5) BIRDBOY: THE FORGOTTEN CHILDREN– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “With her island home left in ruins by an industrial accident, teenage mouse Dinky resolves to escape to a better place with classmates Sandra and Zorrit. But Dinky is pining for her drug-addicted pal Birdboy — and doesn’t want to leave without him.”

6) FERDINAND– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “While mighty Ferdinand the bull looks menacing, the star of this animated children’s tale has a cheery nature — and no desire to enter the bullring. But because of his scary looks, villains abduct Ferdinand, planning to make him fight.”

7) SUNDOWNERS– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Alex Hopper couldn’t be more bored with his “career” as a wedding videographer. So, when his boss sends him to a destination wedding in Mexico, the frustrated filmmaker invites a friend along and the two are primed for fun — whatever it may entail.”

Synopsis by Netflix. “Winston Churchill’s stirring defiance of the Nazi threat is the focus of this historical drama that depicts his fearless refusal to surrender Britain to Adolf Hitler and his relentless army during World War II’s early days.”
11/23/17- Fairly good reviews with some notable poor ones. Audience reviews were fair. I plan to see it. TRDB.
