MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT HOME-
1) A QUIET PASSION– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Famously reclusive poet Emily Dickinson comes to life in this lush biopic that follows her from her days as a gifted but insecure student through her years as an introverted adult whose attachment to her family leads to self-imposed sequestration.”4/14/17– Excellent reviews by the critics but only mediocre one from audiences. TRDB.

7/21/17- I agree with the audiences on this one. I just couldn’t get into the movie. TRDB.

2) REALITY- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “While working as a cameraman on an execrable cooking show, Jason pursues investors for a horror film he’s dying to direct. He finds a producer willing to fund the movie but with one proviso: Jason must first come up with the perfect cinematic groan.”

5/1/15- Good reviews for what sounds like a fairly stupid idea. TRDB.

7/26/17- A good movie about a man’s loss of reality in the quest for fortune and fame. TRDB. Netflix Disc.

COMING TO NETFLIX NEXT TUESDAY, AUG. 1-
1) COLOSSAL– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix “Booted from her boyfriend’s apartment, alcoholic Gloria returns to her hometown and takes a job in a pal’s bar. Awakening one day to learn that a giant scaly monster is terrorizing Seoul, she soon discovers she has a strange connection to the beast.”4/7/17- Fairly good reviews from critics and audiences. TRDB.

2) THE LOVERS– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “With spouses Mary and Michael each pursuing affairs, they agree to divorce. But on the brink of their split becoming official, a sudden burst of passion between them leaves both feeling guilty for cheating on their lovers.”5/5/17- Very good reviews for this comedy, drama, romance. TRDB.

5/12/17- I liked this movie very much. The acting was excellent and the story interesting. The movie led to lots of discussion. TRDB.

Recommended-
1) LANDLINE– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this nostalgic portrait of New York City family life in the 1990s, Dana Jacobs is exploring her wild side before her wedding, while younger sister Ali is taking drugs, having sex and making discoveries of her own — including her father’s affair.”7/21/17- Mixed reviews for this drama/comedy– more positive than negative. TRDB.

2) AMNESIA– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “After arriving on the island of Ibiza hoping to land a DJ gig at a popular dance club, young German Jo meets an enigmatic older woman named Martha — who conceals her German nationality for reasons involving their country’s past.”

7/21/17- Fairly good reviews. TRDB.

2) THE GIRL WITHOUT HANDS– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Based on a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, this animated fable focuses on a girl sold to the devil by her starving father. When her soul proves too virtuous for Satan to possess, he commands her dad to chop off her hands.”

7/21/17- Very good reviews for this animated film. TRDB.

3) MISTER UNIVERSO– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “When lion tamer Tairo loses his lucky charm, superstition keeps him from performing his traveling circus act. Looking for a replacement, Tairo embarks on a journey across Italy to find the man who gave him the amulet: famed strongman Mister Universo.”

7/21/17- Just a few reviews so far and they are all very good. TRDB.

4) ROMEO IS BLEEDING– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “This compelling documentary follows poet Donté Clark as he pens and helps mount an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragic play “Romeo and Juliet,” with an eye toward addressing the violence plaguing his hometown of Richmond, California.”

7/21/17- Only 3 reviews so far– 2 up and 1 down. TRDB.

5) KEKSZAKALLU– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “This observational drama follows four young Argentinean women — all insulated daughters of wealthy industrialists — as they stand on the cusp of adulthood and begin taking tentative steps into the broader world.”

7/21/17- Excellent reviews with the notable exception of the NY Times. TRDB.

6) THE MIDWIFE– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “With the clinic where she works about to shut down, dedicated midwife Claire is undecided about her future when her purposeful life is upended by the sudden reappearance of her dead father’s former mistress, Béatrice — who’s seeking closure.”

7/21/17- Very good reviews from the critics and from audiences as well. TRDB.

Not Recommended
1) GIRLS TRIP- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “When four lifelong girlfriends journey to New Orleans to attend the Essence Festival — the largest event celebrating African-American culture and music in the United States — the women teach the Big Easy a thing or two about partying.”7/21/17- I have NO intention of seeing this movie but it did get some very good reviews. TRDB.

2) THE UNTAMED– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this genre-bending parable, unhappily married Alejandra and Angel find their parochial lives upended by an otherworldly creature that provides rapturous erotic pleasure — but is also a source of great danger.”

7/21/17- Good reviews from the critics and awful ones by audiences for this sci-fi, horror movie. I’ll skip it!!

3) THE PULITZER AT 100– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Released during the 100th year of the Pulitzer prize, this absorbing documentary looks at the history of the awards, providing profiles of and interviews with a number of the winners and readings of their works by famous actors.”

7/21/17- Just a few reviews and they are terrible. TRDB.

4) THE BLACK PRINCE– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Proclaimed the Maharaja of Punjab at age 5, Duleep Singh was dethroned by the time he was 10 and exiled to England as a teen, where he became a Christian. This historical drama charts Singh’s long struggle to return to his nation and his Sikh faith.”

7/21/17- Terrible reviews by the critics and very good ones by audiences. I’ll pass! TRDB.

C) THE STONZEK THEATER AT THE LAKE WORTH PLAYHOUSE-
1) THE EXCEPTION– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “This turbulent drama portrays the converging fates of Kaiser Wilhelm, exiled to Holland after Germany’s defeat in World War I, and a young Jewish woman whose presence in the Kaiser’s household raises the suspicions of an SS officer looking for spies.”6/2/17- Most critics liked it but nobody had great things to say. Audiences were mixed. TRDB.

2) LETTERS FROM BAGHDAD– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Dubbed the female Lawrence of Arabia, archaeologist Gertrude Bell swapped the strictures of Edwardian England for the wilds of the Arabian Desert, where she helped shape the modern Middle East. This documentary tells Bell’s story in her own words.”6/2/17- Good reviews. TRDB.
