MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT THE THEATER-
1) THE WEDDING PLAN– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “This offbeat comedy follows bride-to-be Michal, a 32-year-old Orthodox Jew whose fiancé breaks their engagement. Rather than call off the nuptials, Michal decides to let God provide her with a groom by the scheduled wedding day.”5/12/17- Fairly good reviews. TRDB.

5/19/17- Touted as a comedy– it isn’t.  A wonderful Israeli movie that was poignant and very well acted. TRDB.

OPENED LAST FRIDAY, MAY 19-
1) PAINT IT BLACK– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Already in shock after her boyfriend’s suicide, Josie is left reeling when his mother, Meredith, confronts her at his funeral. Despite their mutual hostility, Josie and Meredith are drawn together as they attempt to come to grips with their loss.”5/19/17- Mostly good reviews but nobody raved about it. TRDB.

2) ABACUS: SMALL ENOUGH TO JAIL– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “When Thomas Sung opened tiny Abacus Bank to serve fellow Chinese immigrants, little did he dream that his would be the only financial institution indicted in the wake of the 2008 mortgage meltdown. This documentary chronicles his long legal battle.”

5/19/17- Very good reviews for this movie. TRDB.

3) WAKEFIELD– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Lawyer, husband, dad: between his many roles, Howard Wakefield doesn’t get much “me” time. So, when he follows a raccoon into the attic above his garage — and realizes he can observe his family from there without being seen — he decides to stay.”

5/19/17- A strange sounding movie that received OK reviews with some very positive and yes, some very negative also. TRDB.

4) THE WOMAN WHO LEFT– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “After serving 30 years for a crime she didn’t commit, Horacia Somorostro is freed when another inmate admits to framing her at the behest of Rodrigo Trinidad, Horacia’s ex-lover. Returning to her hometown, she quietly plots her revenge on Rodrigo.”

5/19/17- Very good reviews. TRDB.

5) THE SURVIVALIST– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “As a survivor of the apocalypse struggles to maintain his food source and fend off marauding gangs, a woman and her daughter wander onto his makeshift farm looking for shelter, raising his suspicions and complicating his isolated way of life.”

5/19/17- Yet another strange sounding movie, this one great excellent reviews from the critics and OK ones from audiences. TRDB.

6) AFTERIMAGE– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “After losing an arm and a leg in World War I, Polish avant-garde artist and academic Wladyslaw Strzeminski became a passionate anti-Stalinist and a key figure in the Polish resistance to Soviet control of the nation’s politics and culture.”

5/19/17- Very good reviews. It sounds more like a documentary. TRDB.

7) EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Confined to her home because of her severe autoimmune disorder, Maddy has spent 17 years isolated from the world. But the arrival of a handsome new next-door neighbor soon turns Maddy’s sheltered life upside down.”

5/19/17- Weak reviews by the critics and good ones by audiences. TRDB.

8) ICAROS: A VISION– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “When Angelina learns that she has breast cancer, she travels to the Amazon hoping that shamanic medicine can cure her. But after taking the natural hallucinogen ayahuasca and bonding with a young shaman, she finds her perception of illness altered.”

5/19/17– Good reviews. TRDB.

9) HELL ON EARTH: THE FALL OF SYRIA AND THE RISE OF ISIS- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Turning their lens on the Syrian conflict after collaborating on three Afghanistan War films, Sebastian Junger and Nick Quested examine the political toll and human cost of the chaos that’s engulfed Syria and led to the rise of the Islamic State.”

5/19/17- Great reviews for this documentary. TRDB.

10) THE COMMUNE– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “When architecture professor Erik inherits a palatial family home in suburban Copenhagen, he and his wife decide to make it a commune, inviting their friends to move in. But things take a tempestuous turn as adultery and jealousy enter the picture.”

5/19/17- Good reviews by the critics and weak ones from audiences. I’d give it a try. TRDB.

1) 20th.CENTURY WOMEN- I liked it
2) BURDEN- Great reviews

3) BURN COUNTRY- Fairly good reviews- I haven’t seen it yet

4) CAFE SOCIETY- I liked this movie and I never miss a Woody

5) CAPTAIN FANTASTIC- I liked it very much

6) DANCER- I liked this very much

7) THE EAGLE HUNTRESS- Very good

8)THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN- Very good

9) FENCES- Very good– like watching the play

10) I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO- Very good reviews and I plan on seeing it

11) LA LA LAND- I liked it a lot

12) LO AND BEHOLD- Fascinating and everybody should see it

13) LOVING- An excellent drama

14) MANCHESTER BY THE SEA- I loved this movie

15) MOONLIGHT- Good but not nearly as good as the critics said

16) OTHER PEOPLE- I liked this very much

17) PATERSON- Very different but I liked this slow moving film

18)ROOM- Very good

19) THE SALESMAN- An excellent movie from Iran

20) SNOWDEN- I liked it– it’s still in the news

21) SULLY- I liked it very much

22) TONI ERDMANN- I enjoyed this movie from Germany. This movie was on the top 10 list of several critics for 2016

23) ZERO DAYS- Very interesting and I recommend it

1) PARIS CAN WAIT– Jacob Burns. 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “With her daughter at college and her workaholic husband perpetually absent, Anne Lockwood is ripe for the wooing when one of her spouse’s associates offers to give her a lift from Cannes to Paris — a seven-hour journey that turns into two days.”5/12/17- Fairly good reviews. TRDB.

2) BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB: ADIOS– Clearview 100.  Synopsis by Netflix. “Adding a final chapter to the Buena Vista Social Club’s unexpected rise to fame, this engaging sequel to the 1999 documentary includes interviews with the remaining original band members and footage of their triumphant farewell tour.”

1) CHUCK– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Known for his ability to take punches and keep standing, boxer Chuck Wepner — nicknamed the “Bayonne Bleeder” — served as the inspiration for movie pugilist Rocky Balboa. This fast-paced biopic chronicles Wepner’s life in and out of the ring.5/5/17- OK reviews by the critics and weak ones from audiences. TRDB.
