1) KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE– 2016. Synopsis by Netflix. “This intriguing mash-up of documentary and drama follows actress Kate Lynn Sheil as she heads to Florida to prepare for her film role as Christine Chubbuck, the Sarasota newscaster who committed suicide on the air in 1974.
8/26/16- Excellent reviews by the critics and fair ones by audiences. TRDB.
2) LONDON ROAD– 2016. Synopsis by Netflix “In 2006, five women’s bodies are discovered in the English town of Ipswich. In the wake of the tragedy, the shaken residents struggle to deal with the aftermath and the realization that the killer was a member of the community.”
9/9/16- Fairly good professional reviews but poor audience ones. TRDB.
3) QUEEN OF KATWE– 2016. Synopsis by Netflix. “This inspiring documentary recounts the amazing but true story of Phiona Mutesi, an impoverished Ugandan girl whose early skill in chess, nurtured by her dedicated coach, would lead her all the way to the World Chess Olympiad.”
9/23/16- Fairly good reviews from critics and from audiences. TRDB.
4) CHRONIC– 2016. Synopsis by Netflix. “Working as a home-care nurse, David’s dedication leads him to form strong bonds with his terminally ill patients. Managing friendships in his personal life, however, proves far more challenging.”
9/23/16- Mostly good reviews but all critics said that it was very difficult to watch this film because of the content. The full reviews sounds even more interesting and I will try to see this movie. TRDB.
5) MOONLIGHT– 2016. Synopsis by Netflix. “Growing up in the drug-soaked world of 1980s Miami, young Chiron struggles to make his way through a helter-skelter adolescence while also grappling with confusion and anxiety about his emerging sexuality.”
10/21/16- Excellent reviews from critics and audiences as well. TRDB.
10/30/16- A profoundly sad chronicle of a gay black child becoming a gay black man. The movie was extremely well done- acting and music reminded me of an opera.
6) CREEPY– 2016. Synopsis by Netflix. “After exchanging the perilous life of a police detective for the far safer world of academia, criminal-psychology lecturer Koichi Takakura is drawn back into the fray when an old case is reopened. Meanwhile, odd doings are afoot in his neighborhood.”

2) LOVESONG– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “With her hubby constantly on the road, Sarah decides to hit the road herself and sets off with her young daughter and best friend, Mindy. Always close, the pals soon become something more — but when Mindy makes an abrupt exit, Sarah is left hanging.”

3) AMERICAN FABLE– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Amazed to find a stranger locked in a silo, young Gitty learns he’s a developer who’s been abducted by farmers (including her dad) intent on keeping their land. After bonding with the captive, she must decide whether to save him or protect her clan.”
2/17/17- OK reviews from the critics and weak reviews from audiences. TRDB.
4) EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “When a family wedding draws Los Angeles physician Clara Barron back to her Mexican home, she can’t bear to show up without a date and enlists a co-worker to fill the role. But Clara is unprepared when her former boyfriend turns up at the event.”

5) MY NAME IS EMILY– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Teenage Emily finds her life upended when her father is committed to a mental institution after her mother’s death. Put in foster care and forced to attend a school she despises, Emily decides to hit the road to bust her dad out of the bin.”

6) YOU’RE KILLING ME SUSANA– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Soap opera actor Eligio is shocked when his wife, Susana, abruptly flees Mexico to pursue writing studies at an American university. Tracking her to the Iowa campus, Eligio tries to persuade her to return to Mexico but finds he has his work cut out.”

7) HOW HEAVY THIS HAMMER– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Though he has a wife and two sons, middle-aged Erwin barely notices his family because he spends most of his spare time riveted by a Viking war game he plays endlessly on his computer. Realizing he’s in a rut, Erwin attempts to break free.”
2/17/17- Most critics liked this movie but there were some notable exceptions. TRDB.
8) KEEP QUIET– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Virulently anti-Semitic, right-wing Hungarian politician Csanad Szegedi finds his views undermined after learning about his Jewish heritage. Over a three-year period, he comes to embrace his new faith, as chronicled in this fascinating documentary.”

2) THE GREAT WALL– 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Set in 15th-century China, this epic tale follows a pair of traveling British warriors who discover that the Great Wall being erected isn’t to keep out the Mongols: It’s to repel a horde of rampaging supernatural creatures.”

2) THE RED TURTLE– Clearview 100. 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Without dialogue, this meditative animated fable chronicles the story of a man who washes up on a remote desert island, where he builds a makeshift raft to escape but is repeatedly turned back by an enormous red turtle.”
