11/30/14- Well done and poignant movie from Korea about government overstepping its bounds in the name of National Security. Sounds familiar. TRDB.

OMAR

OMAR- 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “With his girlfriend, Nadia, living on the other side of an Israeli-built boundary wall, young Palestinian Omar regularly scales it to visit her. But he faces even greater obstacles after a lethal confrontation with an Israeli soldier.”

2/2/14- Good reviews from most critics. TRDB.

6/11/14- An excellent thriller that paints a bleak picture of life as a Palestinian. One critic (Ty Burr) said that it leaves you with less answers than before. Well said. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

STRANGER BY THE LAKE

STRANGER BY THE LAKE- 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this gay murder thriller, young Franck notices the middle-aged Henri sitting on a beach by himself and starts a conversation. Their dialogue continues over several days, in between Franck’s repeated trysts with a seductive killer named Michel.”

1/24/14- Very good reviews in general and in today’s NY Times as well. TRDB.

5/20/14- This movie was trivial and poorly acted and went from boring to downright weird. I turned it off. TRDB.

RUN & JUMP- 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “Struggling to support her family after her husband, Conor, is fundamentally changed by a stroke, Vanetia accepts a grant from a brain researcher named Ted. As Ted studies Conor, he and Vanetia form an unexpected bond.”

1/31/14- Despite the sadness of the basic topic I liked this movie very much. Comcast On-Demand. TRDB.

3/12/14- An superb portrayal of what “family” means. Wonderful acting by all and definitely a must-see.” TRDB.

WHEN I SAW YOU- 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “Displaced to a Jordanian refugee camp with his mother in the wake of the Six-Day War, a restless 11-year-old Palestinian has trouble adjusting. Yearning to reunite with his missing father, the headstrong boy sets out on a life-changing journey.”

GLORIA- 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “A middle-aged divorcée looking to fill the void in her life sees an opportunity for a permanent relationship when she meets a charming former naval officer. But baggage from the past may derail their romance.”

3/26/14- Wonderful acting by the leading lady and an interesting story make this Chilean movie definitely worth seeing. TRDB.

THE ROCKET- 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “Determined to disprove the common belief that he brings bad luck to everyone around him, outcast Laotian boy Ahlo builds a giant rocket with the intention of participating in the lucrative but dangerous competition at a rocket festival.”

3/30/14- A very good movie that was really like a fable about an optimistic child and what he can accomplish using his wits and leftover war materials. TRDB. At the Theater.
