DEAR FRIENDS-
QUICK LOOK AT MY FAVORITES OF THE WEEK-
1) THE COLOR PURPLE– At the Theater
2) ROSE– On Prime
_____________________________________________________________________
MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK-
1) THE COLOR PURPLE– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “A story of love and resilience based on the novel and the Broadway musical, THE COLOR PURPLE is a decades-spanning tale of one woman’s journey to independence. Celie faces many hardships in her life, but ultimately finds extraordinary strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.”

12/24/23- Very good reviews for this drama and I liked it. TRDB.

2) ROSE– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “ROSE is the story of two sisters, Inger and Ellen, and how their relationship is challenged on a highly anticipated coach trip to Paris. When Inger announces her struggles with mental health to the group, the sisters are faced with pity from some and discrimination from others. On arrival in Paris, it soon becomes clear that Inger has a hidden agenda concerning a figure from her past, ultimately involving the entire group in her hunt for answers. ROSE is a film about love and care for each other, in spite of our differences, as much as it is a film about not judging a book by its cover.”

1/2/24- Excellent reviews by the critics and fairly good ones from audiences for this Danish drama. Make sure you are seeing the movie ROSE from 2024 and Not the one from 2022. TRDB.

FILM REVIEWS #979

DECEMBER 28, 2023-
DEAR FRIENDS:
QUICK LOOK AT MY FAVORITES OF THE WEEK-
1) THE BOYS IN THE BOAT– In Theater
_____________________________________________________________________
MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK-
1) THE BOYS IN THE BOAT– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “The Boys in the Boat is a sports drama based on the #1 New York Times bestselling non-fiction novel written by Daniel James Brown. The film, directed by George Clooney, is about the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed for gold at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. This inspirational true story follows a group of underdogs at the height of the Great Depression as they are thrust into the spotlight and take on elite rivals from around the world.”

12/29/23- Terrible reviews from the critics and excellent ones from audiences. The movie was very Hollywood but still had some redeeming qualities.  TRDB.

NEWLY RELEASED MOVIES IN THEATERS AND/OR STREAMING-
1) FREUD’S LAST SESSION
12/23/23- Really poor reviews.
2) THE INNER CAGE– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “A prison in the process of being divested. Only a few guards and inmates are still there and they all are waiting to be transferred. A bit at a time, the rules begin to appear increasingly pointless and that of the men left behind turns into a new fragile community.”

12/23/23- Very good reviews. TRDB.

3) ALL OF US STRANGERS– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal), which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up, and the childhood home where his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell), appear to be living, just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before.”

12/24/23- Excellent reviews for this drama. TRDB.

4) THE IRON CLAW– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports.”

12/20/23- Good reviews for this biopic. TRDB.

5) THE COLOR PURPLE– 2023.

12/24/23- Very good reviews for this drama. TRDB.

6) THE FAMILY PLAN– 2023. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Dan Morgan (Mark Wahlberg) loves his quiet suburban life as a devoted husband, father of three and successful car salesman. But that’s only half the story. Decades earlier, he was an elite government assassin tasked with eliminating the world’s deadliest threats. When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife (Michelle Monaghan), angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off.”

12/16/23- Terrible reviews by the critics and poor ones by audiences but I can’t pass up a road movie. TRDB.

7) IMMEDIATE FAMILY– 2022. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Four musicians find lasting success but stay out of the limelight while performing with iconic singers Phil Collins, James Taylor, Carole King and others.”

12/16/23- Excellent reviews by the critics and weak ones from audiences. TRDB.
