HOTEL NORMANDY- 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “Two years after her husband dies in a motorbike crash, Alice’s best pals send her to the luxurious Hotel Normandy for her birthday. Unknown to Alice, her friends also arrange for a man they feel may be just right for her to be there as well.”

9/27/13- A good review in today’s NY Times, mixed reviews from other critics and poor audience reaction. I think I’ll give it a try anyway when it comes to DVD format. TRDB.

ZAYTOUN

ZAYTOUN- 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “In 1982 Beirut, an Israeli fighter pilot named Yoni crashes outside a camp of young Palestinian refugees, where he’s met by gun-toting orphan Fahed. In exchange for his freedom, Yoni agrees to take the boy back to the village where his parents lived.”

9/20/13- This sounds interesting but it has received weak reviews all around. TRDB.

3/12/14- A nice idea but way too acted and simplistic. I’d give it an OK if you have little else to do. TRDB.

POPULAIRE

POPULAIRE- 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this romantic comedy set in the 1950s, a smooth-talking insurance agent is so impressed with his secretary’s skills that he encourages her to enter speed-typing competitions. He also invites her to live in his mansion, and romance slowly blooms.”

9/6/13- Mixed reviews in general but most liked it. The NY Times liked it–just. TRDB.

THE LAST CHRISTEROS- 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “This minimalistic film chronicles the little-known war of a band of Christeros, rural Christian rebels, against the Mexican government in the 1930s. The character-driven narrative focuses on the periods between skirmishes rather than conflict itself.”
