PONETTE- 1996. Synopsis by Netflix. “When her mother dies in a car accident, 4-year-old Ponette is left physically and emotionally scarred and in the care of her grief-stricken father. Sent to live with family for a while, Ponette slowly comes to terms with her loss.”

8/16/11- A very good beginning and a wonderful end but too much time spent in the middle watching very cute, precosius children. The 4yr. old star is unbelievable. All in all, I’d still recommend it. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

SEVEN DAYS IN UTOPIA- 2010. Synopsis by IMDB. “After a disastrous debut on the pro circuit, a young golfer finds himself unexpectedly stranded in Utopia, Texas and welcomed by an eccentric rancher.” Sounds interesting and the movie has had good audience reviews so far but none professional. TRDB.

THE DEBT- 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Rachel Singer (Helen Mirren) is a former Mossad intelligence agent forced to relive her unsuccessful 1965 pursuit of a notorious Nazi war criminal when the bold and dangerous fugitive is thought to have reemerged 30 years later in the Ukraine. Director John Madden’s redo of Assaf Bernstein’s 2007 Israeli suspense piece also features Jessica Chastain as the young Rachel Singer, along with Sam Worthington, Tom Wilkinson and Ciarán Hinds.” Fairly good reviews. TRDB.

8/27/17- A very good suspenseful drama. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

EVERYTHING MUST GO- 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Director-writer Dan Rush makes his film debut with this dramedy based on a Raymond Carver short story about Nick (Will Ferrell), a good-hearted but relapsed alcoholic who decides to live on his front lawn after losing his job and being thrown out by his wife.” Fairly good reviews. TRDB.

9/22/11- Fairly slow but thought provoking and I liked it. TRDB. Netflix.

SALVATION BOULEVARD- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Director George Ratliff combines wicked satire with an engrossing mystery in this black comedy about Pastor Dan (Pierce Brosnan), whose megachurch is endangered when he becomes entangled in an unsavory incident that is investigated by hapless parishioner Carl (Greg Kinnear). As Carl delves deeper into the case and makes some disconcerting discoveries, the reverend’s dedicated followers begin an enthusiastic campaign to prevent Carl from spilling the beans.” Poor reviews for this excellent cast. HARIMAYA BRIDGE- 2009. Synopsis by Netflix. “Unsure how to handle his estranged son’s sudden death in Japan, American dad Daniel (Bennet Guillory) travels to the land of the rising sun looking for answers. As he learns about his boy’s life, Daniel must re-examine the resentment he harbors toward the Japanese. The feature film debut from writer-director Aaron Woolfolk, this poignant cross-cultural drama also stars Saki Takaoka, Misa Shimizu and Danny Glover.”

8/12/11- A few OK reviews. TRDB.

10/29/12- A very interesting story but seeing this film on Netflix Streaming limited the amount of sub-titles available and there was significant dialogue that was missed. I still liked it however. TRDB.

BAD POSTURE-  Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Flo, newly fired from his job, is spending his summer wandering Albuquerque aimlessly with his best friend Trey. Together, they spend their days and nights pursuing Trey’s illicit moneymaking schemes. But when Trey implicates Flo in grand theft auto, Flo finds it difficult to shake his feelings of remorse-and his feelings for the car’s beguiling owner, Marissa.”

SCHEHERAZADE, TELL ME A STORY- 2009. Synopsis by Netflix. “When her husband (Hassan Saeed) asks her to tone down the subversive political rhetoric on her program, Egyptian talk show host Hebba (Mona Zaki) draws even more heat by beginning a series that explores the experience of women in contemporary Egypt. As three women speak out about the mistreatment they’ve suffered in a deeply patriarchal society, Hoda must contend with her own disintegrating marriage. Yousry Nasrallah directs this drama.”

Very good review in NY Times on 8/12/11. TRDB.

5/24/13- A very powerful, well acted drama that I recommend to all of you. TRDB.

THE GUARD

THE GUARD- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “When tightly wound FBI agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle) invades an Irish village in pursuit of international drug dealers, wisecracking local copper Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson) does his best to annoy the American and get on with his circumscribed life. But soon there’s a murder, and Boyle finds himself swept up in detective work way beyond his pay grade. John Michael McDonagh directs this action-filled comedy.” Very good reviews. TRDB.

1/23/12- I almost turned this movie off halfway but it did get better and I enjoyed the 2nd. half. TRDB. Netflix.

12/20/11- Friends liked this movie very much. TRDB.

ONE DAY- 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “After a romantic tryst on college graduation night, Emma and Dexter pursue separate dreams. This romantic drama based on a novel of the same name checks in with them each year on the same date, tracking their personal and professional progress.” Poor reviews. TRDB.

8/19/11- OK review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

1/2/12- An old fashioned romance that I enjoyed despite it’s being predictable. TRDB. Netflix.
