IN THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Set in the doomed city of Hiroshima during World War II, this hand-drawn animated tale chronicles the struggles of Suzu Urano, who must keep her family and herself alive and sane after an atomic bomb destroys the city on Aug. 6, 1945.”

GOOD TIME

GOOD TIME- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “When an ill-fated bank robbery attempt puts his brother behind bars, Constantine Nikas begins a frenzied all-night scramble to get his sibling out of lockup while trying to stay one step ahead of a police manhunt himself.”

8/11/17- I usually don’t recommend movies of this sort but this one received excellent reviews– with a few notable exceptions. TRDB.

2/19/18- A very good  and very intense drama/mystery, especially the first half. TRDB. Netflix Disc.

THE GLASS CASTLE

THE GLASS CASTLE- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Adapted from the novel of the same name, this family drama follows future writer Jeannette Walls, who spends her hardscrabble childhood on the run with her negligent artist mother and storytelling alcoholic father.”

8/9/17- Mixed reviews but it sounds quirky enough to be enjoyable. Audiences liked it more than the critics. TRDB.

12/7/17- If you can get over hating the lead actor you can enjoy this movie. I did. TRDB.

POP AYE- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “A stalled career and failing marriage have left architect Thana disillusioned. But his attitude slowly begins to change as he leads his childhood pet elephant — rediscovered in Bangkok — on a journey to the farm where they grew up.”

8/8/17- Very good reviews from the critics and OK ones from audiences. I’d see it. TRDB.

BRAVE NEW JERSEY- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “In 1938, Lullaby, New Jersey, is about as far from a big city and a sophisticated populace as you can get. So, when Orson Welles makes his “War of the Worlds” broadcast, residents listen in terror, unaware that it’s a hoax and unsure how to react.”

THE BATTLESHIP ISLAND

THE BATTLESHIP ISLAND- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this historical drama based on events that occurred near the end of World War II, 400 Koreans attempt to escape from Hashima Island, where they’re being forced into mining coal by their colonial Japanese rulers.”

8/4/17- Just 3 reviews so far- 2 poor and 1 so-so. It sounds like it might be interesting from a historical point. TRDB.

4 DAYS IN FRANCE

4 DAYS IN FRANCE- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “Leaving his lover, Paul, without a word, restless Parisian Pierre takes off on a road trip across France. Along the way, he uses his smartphone dating app as his compass, making contact with a gallery of oddball characters as Paul tries to find him.”

8/4/17- Very good reviews for this strange sounding French drama. TRDB.

COLUMBUS

COLUMBUS- 2017. Synopsis by Netflix. “After traveling from Korea to Columbus, Indiana — where his architect father lies in a coma — middle-aged Jin meets young Casey, who’s put her dreams on hold to care for her mother. As Jin and Casey bond, her architectural ambitions are reignited.”

8/4/17- Excellent reviews by the critics and good ones by audiences. TRDB.

8/19/17- It felt like reading an emotional article in Architecture Digest. Very well done with wonderful, understated acting and excellent screenplay. TRDB. At the Theater.
