ELLES- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “While investigating a story about students who become prostitutes to pay their way through university, a middle-aged French journalist befriends two of her subjects, whose strong personalities cause her to reevaluate her own bourgeois life.”

4/27/12– Poor reviews including the one in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

9/15/12- This movie had some redeeming social value and did hold my interest at times. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

A SIMPLE LIFE- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “After working for the Leung family for decades, aservant still takes care of filmmaker Roger Leung — but when she falls sick, the tables are turned as Roger looks after her in this heartwarming tale inspired by a true story.”

4/14/13- Very good review in yesterday’s NY Times and from various other sources as well. TRDB.

4/24/13- A thoughtful and very well acted movie that I highly recommend. TRDB.

MARLEY

MARLEY- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “Featuring dozens of interviews, electrifying concert performances and rare footage, this documentary explores the music, life and legacy of reggae icon Bob Marley, from his birth in 1945 to his death from cancer at age 36.” Excellent reviews. TRDB.

4/20/12- Great review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

9/10/12- A well done documentary about the legend. Should have had more music as that was the best part for me. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

GOON

GOON- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “When he’s seen dispatching a rude opposing hockey player in the stands, Doug Glatt is hired by a rival team … for his fighting skills. It seems the new team’s star is gun-shy after being hit by a puck, and Glatt’s job is to be his on-ice bodyguard.”

3/31/12- Good review in today’s NY Times and elsewhere as well. TRDB.

6/18/12- Aside from a few funny scenes and a few interesting pieces of screenplay this movie was like all of the rest of the violent sports films where the hero defies all odds. TRDB. Netflix.

GIULIA DOESN’T DATE AT NIGHT- 2009. Synopsis by Netflix. “Italian director Giuseppe Piccioni weaves a tender story about the unlikely romance that develops between Guido (Valerio Mastandrea), a young writer, and Giulia (Valeria Golino), a woman who’s teaching his daughter how to swim in this affecting drama. Guido soon starts taking swimming lessons himself, but when he finally asks Giulia for a date, he learns that she can’t go out at night because she’s out on a day pass from prison.”

4/6/12- Interesting story, characters and acting make this movie worthwhile. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

KEYHOLE- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “From surrealist master Guy Maddin comes this tale of a gangster trying desperately to reach his wife. Ulysses Pick arrives home with a body in tow and must hunt from room to room to find Hyacinth in a dreamlike odyssey taking place indoors.”

8/14/12- I had absolutely no interest in this “avant-garde” movie and found it ridiculous and pretentious. I turned it off. TRDB. Netflix.

THE LADY

THE LADY- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Based on the inspiring true story, this epic yet intimate biopic tells the story of Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s leading pro-democracy reformer who was held under house arrest for 15 years, and her English husband, who worked tirelessly for her release.” Mediocre reviews at best but I will definitely see this one on principle. TRDB.

11/13/12- An inspirational woman in a somewhat less than inspirational movie but I did like it. TRDB.

TAKE ME HOME

TAKE ME HOME- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Thom is an unlicensed New York cabbie who takes on the fare of his life when a woman asks him to drive her to California to see her ailing father. In classic rom-com style, the chemistry between the two builds as they make their way west.”

Fairly good audience reviews so far. TRDB.

6/11/12- A cute romantic comedy and since I love road trip movies I enjoyed this one too. TRDB. Netflix.

THE ASSAULT

THE ASSAULT- 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Based on the 1994 attack on an Air France plane, this dramatization tells the story of the stunning response to this globally televised act of terrorism. Incorporating real footage, the film explores personalities from all sides of the conflict.”

OK early reviews. TRDB.

4/6/12- Weak review in today’s NY Times and by many other critics as well. TRDB.

8/6/12- I found this movie interesting primarily because it was based on a true story. There was some original footage as well. It was worth seeing for the historical information especially leading up to the storming of the aircraft. TRDB. Netflix.
