9/19/12- One of the saddest, realistic movies I’ve seen in a long time. Great acting and you feel like you’re in it. TRDB.

POLISSE

POLISSE- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “This French drama presents a fictionalized but well-researched portrait of the juvenile protection division of the Paris court system, following a documentarian as she films the employees in the department and the children under its authority.” Good early reviews. TRDB.

5/18/12- Good review in today’s NY Times and very good reviews by almost all critics. Audiences have liked it too. TRDB.

11/6/12- Although this movie was difficult to watch at times it was very realistic and portrayed well the stress that the police men and women are under while trying to protect children from predators. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

5/18/12- Poor review in today’s NY Times and weak reviews in general. TRDB.

10/22/12- Not very funny and a weak dialogue in general!! I turned it off. TRDB. Netflix.

11/19/12- Poor reviews as noted and I totally agree. I turned it off fairly quickly. TRDB. Netflix.

5/2/12- This movie, from Colombia, held my interest and I enjoyed it. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

SOUND OF MY VOICE- 2011. In this absorbing psychological thriller, the line between voyeurism and belief blurs once the pretenders shake hands with sphinx-like cult leader Maggie (Brit Marling).”

4/27/12- Good reviews in general and in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

1/1/13- Very mixed reviews and I almost turned it off at the midpoint but I stuck it out and actually liked it. Reviewers seemed to like Marling but I thought that she was the weakest link in the movie. TRDB. Netflix.

BERNIE

BERNIE- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this black comedy inspired by real-life events, affable Texas mortician Bernie befriends the small town’s wealthiest widow and then kills her. But despite the suspicious nature of her death, no one wants to think anything but the best of Bernie.”

4/27/12- Very good reviews in general from both critics and audiences alike for this movie based on a true story. The review in the NY Times was difficult to interpret. TRDB.

8/26/12- I thought that this movie was extremely clever and provocative and presented in an interesting way as well. I’d definitely recommend it. TRDB. Netflix.

WHERE DO WE GO NOW?

WHERE DO WE GO NOW?- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “While their men fight a remote sectarian war, the women of a Lebanese village — one hemmed in by minefields — band together to denounce the clash of Islamic and Christian beliefs that sustains the war and threatens to poison their own community.”

5/11/12– Mediocre professional reviews and OK audience reaction but good review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

10/1/12- It took a while to get into this movie but I did and even though I agree with a reviewer who said that the film was more interesting than satisfying I can still recommend it. TRDB. Netflix.

5 BROKEN CAMERAS

5 BROKEN CAMERAS- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this moving documentary, a Palestinian farmer chronicles his village’s nonviolent resistance to the presence of encroaching Israeli settlers and military. As camera after camera gets shot or otherwise destroyed, the farmer continues filming.”

A few excellent reviews and mostly good ones. TRDB.

1/28/13- A well done home spun documentary about the Palestinian resistance presented in a one-sided manner. It’s also about the filmmaker’s need to film and what it means to him. TRDB.

THE DAY HE ARRIVES- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “This dreamlike, meandering narrative — shot in black and white and set in the Korean capital of Seoul — follows the movements of university professor Sungjoon, who’s supposed to meet a male colleague but comes across an old actress friend instead.”

4/20/12 Excellent review in today’s NY Times and elsewhere as well. TRDB.

1/5/13- Boring as hell and I turned it off quickly. TRDB. Netflix.
