Early reviews are very good. I’ve seen the coming attractions and it looks interesting. TRDB.

4/15/13- Beautiful but not for the restless among us. I watched about half the movie and then turned it off. Very, very slow with NO dialogue. TRDB.

THE OTHER DREAM TEAM- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “As the U.S. basketball “Dream Team” took the 1992 Olympics by storm, the scrappy team from the newly independent Lithuania sought only to defeat Russia. Their tale involves personal freedom, the end of communism and, unexpectedly, the Grateful Dead.”

Very good reviews. TRDB.

9/28/12- Today’s NY Times basically called this documentary informative but “drained of drama.” TRDB.

5/18/13- I liked the movie very much as it used basketball essentially as  secondary to their quest for freedom. TRDB.

GIRL MODEL

GIRL MODEL- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Documentarians Ashley Sabin and David Redmon take an unflinching look at the modeling industry, focusing on a conflicted American scout — herself a former model — who recruits poverty-stricken adolescent girls from Russia to work in Japan.”

Rotten Tomatoes had this to say- “Told through the eyes of a 13-year-old Siberian girl and the American scout who discovered her, Girl Model follows a complex global supply chain of young girls sent abroad to seek their fortunes in the unregulated and often murky world of the modeling industry”

9/7/12- Good early reviews in general but a review in today’s NY Times is weak. TRDB.

5/1/13- A very good documentary exposing the lies and deceit involved in this industry. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE

TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “Slowed by age and failing eyesight, crack baseball scout Gus Lobel takes his grown daughter along as he checks out the final prospect of his career. Along the way, the two renew their bond, and she catches the eye of a young player-turned-scout.”

Fair reviews for this movie starring Clint Eastwood. TRDB. Netflix.

9/21/12- The NY Times today called this movie “safe” and reserved praise for Amy Adams, Eastwood’s daughter in the film. TRDB.

1/19/13- A generally pleasant film with a formulaic screenplay. Just OK. TRDB.

THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this engaging coming-of-age tale based on the best-selling novel by Stephen Chbosky, a shy freshman struggling with depression deals with his best friend’s suicide and his first love — and finds help from two seniors who take an interest in him.”

Mixed reviews, mostly good. TRDB.

3/17/13- Basically fluff but enjoyable never-the-less. TRDB.

HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “This passionate documentary focuses on the grass-roots crusade in the 1980s and ’90s to speed up efforts at developing treatments for the HIV virus. The film follows AIDS activists to Washington, where they challenge the government to act.”

Excellent reviews so far. TRDB.

9/21/12- Great review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

4/1/13- An informative and very moving account of the early activists for AIDS. This film should be a must-see. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

LAWLESS

LAWLESS- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “This true-to-life action saga profiles Virginia’s bootlegging Bondurant gang, whose exploits during the Prohibition era made them outlaw heroes. The three Bondurant brothers tussle with the law and each other as they try to survive changing times.”

Mixed reviews by critics but audiences have liked this one very much. A few called it a bad gangster movie. TRDB.

2/26/13- The movie was a waste of time and I finally turned it off with very little time left. TRDB. Netflix.

THE MASTER

THE MASTER- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “A heavy-drinking loaner named Freddie finds some semblance of a family when he stumbles onto the ship of Lancaster Dodd, the charismatic leader of a new “religion” — some say cult — he forms after World War II.”

A few early reviewers said this was a great piece of work. TRDB.

9/14/12- Great review in today’s NY Times but many of my friends did not like this movie. TRDB.

3/21/13- As far as I’m concerned a great performance by Joachin Phoenix and a very good one by Philip Seymour Hoffman saved this movie from oblivion. You can safely skip it. TRDB. Netflix.

10 YEARS

10 YEARS- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “When a group of friends reunites during their 10th high school reunion, they ponder old dreams and forge new connections. At the center of the crowd is Jake. Planning to propose to his girlfriend, he’s thrown for a loop when his old flame appears.”

I found only 3 reviews, one positive, one very negative and one so-so. TRDB.

9/14/12- Fair review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

3/31/13- A huge waste of time with just a few bright comments surrounded by lots of barroom talk. I had to turn it off. TRDB.

HERMANO

HERMANO- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “Brothers Daniel and Julio love soccer, but while Julio focuses on providing for their family, Daniel dreams about playing professionally. When a pro scout comes to watch them play, they face an agonizing choice between family and their sport.”

8/24/12- Very good review in today’s NY Times. Mixed professional reviews in general but audiences have liked it a lot. TRDB.

2/11/13- I’ll give this movie a mixed review. A bit contrived, a bit formulaic but still has enough going for it for a recommendation. TRDB.
