MY ITALIAN SECRET: THE FORGOTTEN HEROES- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Under the shadow of the Nazi crusade to exterminate European Jews, cycling champ Gino Bartali and an army of his compatriots went to perilous lengths to save thousands of Italian Jews from capture and death, as recounted in this moving documentary.”

3/27/15- I’ve seen just 3 reviews– two up and one down. Sounds interesting. TRDB.

11/17/15- An excellent documentary giving tribute to many Italians who gave sanctuary to Jews during the war. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

MARFA GIRL

MARFA GIRL- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this sexually charged coming-of-age drama, growing up proves a complex job for Adam, who’s about to turn 16 in the border town of Marfa, Texas, when he meets a visiting artist with a lust for life — and for him.”

3/27/15- Poor reviews. TRDB.

7/20/15- I saw this despite the poor reviews and I totally agree with the critics. The film had a few good scenes but was tedious for the most part. TRDB. Netflix.

52 TUESDAYS

52 TUESDAYS- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Filmed over the course of a year — and only on Tuesdays — this bittersweet coming-of-age drama charts a teenager’s struggle toward independence as her mother makes plans to transition from female to male.”

3/27/15– Fairly good reviews including some very good ones as well. TRDB.

8/1/15- A bit slow and tedious but definitely interesting and yet another take on the transgender issue. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

CUPCAKES

CUPCAKES- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “When six friends gather in a Tel Aviv suburb to watch a televised song competition, little do they know that they’ll soon become celebrities. But that’s exactly what happens when the tune they record to cheer up a chum becomes Israel’s entry.”

3/27/15- Fairly good reviews for this Israeli comedy. TRDB.

6/10/15- A delightful  comedy!! TRDB. Netflix.

JAUJA

JAUJA- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “In the late 1800s, Danish military engineer Gunnar Dinesen travels to the South American desert with his daughter, Ingeborg, after being dispatched to map the region for European settlers. When Ingeborg steals away, Dinesen sets out after her.”

3/20/15-Fairly good critical reviews but weak audience reaction. The full synopsis sounded interesting to me and I’ll try to see it. TRDB.

8/21/15- What the hell? This movie brings a new definition to a “slow movie” and I’ll add a boring one too. Some of the most lingering shots at the close of scenes as well. TRDB.

3 HEARTS- Synopsis by Netflix. “After a missed train leads to a chance meeting between Marc Beaulieu and Sylvie Berger, they agree to reconnect a few days later — but Marc doesn’t make it to the rendezvous. When he goes looking for Sylvie, he unwittingly falls for her sister.”

3/13/15- Fairly good professional reviews but awful audience reaction. I’d like to see it. TRDB.

8/4/15- I enjoyed the movie despite the director’s attempt to make a movie with little suspense suspenseful. TRDB. Netflix.

LIKE SUNDAY, LIKE RAIN

LIKE SUNDAY, LIKE RAIN- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “When struggling musician Eleanor takes a position as nanny to 12-year-old cello prodigy Reggie, she’s thrust into the role of parent, mentor and confidant — giving rise to a friendship that has profound effects for them both.”

3/13/15- Reviews are 50/50 from both critics and audiences. There were a few interesting reviews as well and I’ll probably see this movie. TRDB.

11/21/15- I enjoyed this movie quite a bit despite getting a bit irritated with all of the wisdom spouting from the mouth of a 12 year old. TRDB.

ROAD HARD

ROAD HARD- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Bruce Madsen’s success as a stand-up comedian led to TV and movie roles, but those have long since dried up — along with his marriage. To pay his daughter’s college fees, he reluctantly returns to the rigors of life as a touring comic.”

3/6/15- Critics are 50/50 on this one but audiences have liked it a lot. TRDB.

10/28/15- Put me in the positive column– I liked it. TRDB. Netflix.

AN HONEST LIAR

AN HONEST LIAR- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “This revealing documentary profiles magician and escape artist James Randi, who after retiring set about exposing faith healers, psychics and others as frauds. But all the while, Randi was carrying out a deception of his own.”

3/6/15- Good reviews for this documentary. TRDB.

7/31/15- An excellent documentary– especially if you like the concept of “magic.” TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

FAULTS

FAULTS- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Desperate to free their daughter Claire from a cult, her parents hire deprogramming expert Ansel Roth, despite his checkered reputation. Roth kidnaps Claire and holds her captive in a motel room, but his real challenge has barely begun.”

3/6/15- Generally good reviews from both critics and audiences with a few very negative ones thrown in as well. TRDB.

7/19/15- This movie, more like a play, was very interesting as the whole idea of control unfolded between the characters.  I liked it but I enjoyed many of the scenes more than the whole. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.
