ADORATION- Premise by Netflix. “Assigned to translate a terrorism-related news story for his French class, teen Simon (Devon Bostick) weaves personal details into his tale, which soon leaves the Internet swirling with rumors that Simon’s dead father was an actual terrorist. Acclaimed auteur Atom Egoyan‘s haunting and lyrical drama — cleverly structured as a mystery — also stars Scott Speedman as Simon’s caretaker uncle and Arsinée Khanjian as Simon’s persistent teacher.” Good reviews.

AMERICAN VIOLET- Premise by Netflix. “Inspired by true events, this penetrating drama centers on Dee Roberts (Nicole Beharie), a 24-year-old mother of four who’s forced to take on a corrupt district attorney (Michael O’Keefe) when she’s unjustly prosecuted in a large-scale drug case. Directed by Tim Disney, the inspiring tale also stars Alfre Woodard as Dee’s mother, Alma, Tim Blake Nelson as ACLU attorney David Cohen and Will Patton as retired narcotics officer Sam Conroy.” Good reviews.

AWAY WE GO-2009. Directed by Sam Mendes. About an unmarried couple in a long term relationship who are expecting. They travel to several cities to visit friends and relatives and to find a place to settle and raise their child. This movie got only fair reviews but public opinion kept it around for a while.
10/09- I thought it was a fair drama/comedy. Netflix.

THE WINDOW- 2008. Argentina. Directed by Carlos Sorin. About an elderly man, played by Antonio Larreta, who is apparently waiting to die but at the moment is waiting for his son, a concert pianist, who he has not seen in a long time, to arrive from Europe. He has his piano tuned and prepares an old bottle of champagne. Most of the movie took place in his room with his connection to the outside world through a large window. Despite being very slow I liked the movie. Netflix Streaming. 9/09

TREELESS MOUNTAIN- China. Written and directed by So Yong Kim. About 2 young girls who are placed with an aunt they don’t know when their mother packs up and leaves. Clearly one of the slowest movies in history but the girls were appealing enough that I couldn’t turn it off. Worth seeing only with the patience of a saint. Netflix Streaming. 9/09

THE LEAST OF THESE- 2009. By Clark and Jesse Lyda. A documentary about T. Don Hutto, a detention center for illegal immigrants in Texas and the deplorable conditions for these inmates, many of whom are innocent children. A sizable portion of the inmates are in this country seeking asylum and NOT here for economic reasons. Very good. 9/09

SILENT LIGHT- 2007. Directed by Carlos Reygadas and starring Cornelio Wall and Miriam Toews. About a Menonite family with lots of children living in Mexico. The husband is having a long term affair. He has told his wife and best friend the truth but the family lives on. Great scene between the husband and his own father and a very moving scene of the wife crying hysterically while lying under a tree in the pouring rain. The film won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2007. Despite the slow pace of the film I liked it very much. Netflix. 9/09

ADVENTURELAND-2008. Written and directed by Greg Mottola and starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. Eisenberg plays a recent college graduate whose European vacation is canceled for lack of funds. He works in an amusement park and the story is about his summer, the people he meets, and how he learns about himself. Occasionally interesting but more like high school than college graduates. A comedy/drama but not very funny and not very dramatic either. Great sound track however. Netflix. 9/09
