WAJIB

WAJIB- 2018. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Abu Shadi (Mohammad Bakri) is a divorced father and a school teacher in his mid-60s living in Nazareth. After his daughter’s wedding in one month he will be living alone. Shadi (Saleh Bakri), his architect son, arrives from Rome after years abroad to help his father to hand-deliver the wedding invitations to each guest, which is the local Palestinian custom. As the estranged pair spend the day together, the tense details of their relationship come to a head challenging their fragile and very different lives.”

9/20/18- After a somewhat tedious first half this movie came alive and I enjoyed it very much. Seen as part of the Arab Film Festival at the Jacob Burns Film Center. TRDB.

COLETTE

COLETTE- 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this engaging biopic, French writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette emerges as a force to be reckoned with after the novels she’s penned under her husband’s name garner fame for him but not for her, inspiring her to forge her own path.”

9/19/18- Excellent reviews for this movie. It sounds somewhat like “The Wife” that is showing currently. TRDB.

8/15/18- Excellent reviews in general but a few critics said that the movie was carried by Glenn Close. TRDB.

8/31/18- I enjoyed this movie very much. Both leads were excellent and the story was interesting as well. TRDB. At the Theater.

PUZZLE

PUZZLE- 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “While leading an empty suburban existence, Agnes discovers the pleasure of solving jigsaw puzzles and finds she has a rare talent for it. Before long, her hobby provides an entrée into a new life through the world of competitive puzzling.”

8/18/18- I loved this movie, a remake of a 2011 movie with a similar theme. I loved that one too. TRDB. At the Theater

THE CAKEMAKER- 2018. Synopsis by Netflix. “Thomas, a young German baker, is having an affair with Oren, an Israeli married man who has frequent business visits in Berlin. When Oren dies in a car crash in Israel, Thomas travels to Jerusalem seeking answers regarding his death. Under a fabricated identity, Thomas infiltrates into the life of Anat, his lover’s newly widowed wife, who owns a small Café in downtown Jerusalem. Thomas starts to work for her and create German cakes and cookies that bring life into her Café. Thomas finds himself involved in Anat’s life in a way far beyond his anticipation, and to protect the truth he will stretch his lie to a point of no return.”
