BACK TO 1942

BACK TO 1942. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “A North Henan landlord embarks on a pilgrimage to Shaanxi province during the 1942 famine, struggling to survive as war with Japan looms on the horizon. His house beset by starving villagers, Landlord Fan (Zhang Guoli) endeavors to calm the crowd by preparing a feast. But his house is burned down in the chaos, prompting Fan, his teenage daughter Xing Xing (Fiona Wang), his servant Shuang Zhu (Zhang Mo), and his tenant Hua Zhi (Xu Fan) on a treacherous journey south. Along the way, encounters with an American journalist (Adrian Brody), a judge (Dan Wei), and a priest (Zhang Hanyu) who has lost his faith reveal the true depth of the despair that grips the country. But the hardships along the way prompt Fan to make some devastating sacrifices that leave him a broken man. Meanwhile, the Japanese government attempts to turn the Chinese people away from their government by offering them sustenance, and the Chinese government finds themselves forced to choose between feeding their troops or the masses.”

SILENT NIGHT

SILENT NIGHT- 2012. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “A loose remake of the horror classic Silent Night, Deadly Night, Malcolm McDowell and Jaime King star as a small-town sheriff and deputy on the hunt for a murderous Santa Claus terrorizing their community on Christmas Eve. But with the streets full of Santas for the annual Christmas parade, the killer is hiding in plain sight. He’s made his list, checked it twice, and the naughty are going to pay with their lives.”

ELZA

ELZA- 2012. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Bernadette, a single mother in Paris, tries to provide her daughters with everything. She is thrilled when her eldest daughter, Elza, is the first in the family to graduate from college earning a master’s degree summa cum laude. But Elza breaks her mother’s heart by running away to their native Guadeloupe in search of a distant childhood memory: the father she barely remembers.”

11/30/12- A good review in today’s NY Times but a few other reviews that I read were negative. TRDB.

NEW JERUSALEM

NEW JERUSALEM- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “Sean is a young Irish immigrant struggling with life’s uncertainties. Just home from service in Afghanistan, he meets Ike, who believes that Christianity can solve Sean’s troubles. But Ike doesn’t understand that his friendship alone may be enough.”

11/30/12- Mixed review in today’s NY Times but weak reviews in general. Audiences have not liked it either. TRDB.

KING KELLY

KING KELLY- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “King Kelly is spending her 15 minutes of fame as a webcam stripper. When her ex steals her car, Kelly and gal pal Jordan hit the road to get it back. Joined by a state trooper (Kelly’s number-one fan), the duo turn the trip into a ride to remember.”

11/3//12- This film got an interesting review in today’s NY Times. Audiences in general have not  liked it but critics have. TRDB.

SEEDS OF RESILIENCY- 2012. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Seeds of Resiliency, the new documentary by filmmaker Susan Polis Schutz, helps us to understand that our darkest moments can contain a shining light. It introduces us to twelve diverse people who have survived tragedies and challenges by having great hope and helping others. We meet a young boy who is in the Guinness book of records for performing flips in his wheelchair; a man who escaped war-torn Uganda and now assists other refugees; a Korean professor who recently became a quadriplegic, but does not consider himself unfortunate; and a survivor of the Holocaust who believes that “the worst can bring out the best in us.”

THE KING

THE KING- 2012. Synopsis by IMDB. “A feature documentary about one of the greatest sportsmen ever. Darko Kralj (the King) is the only sportsman in the history of sports who has beaten a world record in his category five times in a row at one world championship! A croatian paralympic, seriously wounded in 1991 during the war in Croatia, Darko Kralj has almost died. Doctors didn’t expect him to survive. Today, he lives with a wife and three sons, the eldest one being the one Darko is the most attached to. Some kind of similar destiny brought them together, the kid has lost his biological father in the war. Tereza, his wife, has her own life story. Going towards the end of this unusual life story, we shall more and more understand where his strength and incredible love for life comes from.”

MAN AT WAR- 2012. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Jacek Blawut’s documentary “Man at War” puts the spotlight on men fascinated by World War II who pursue their passion in the realm of computer games. Following players and their lives, the director inquires if we are witnessing the rise of a new type of human – homo virtualis.”
