DEAR FRIENDS:
PLEASE CHECK OUT MY WEBSITE AT thereeldrbob.com
As many of you know I’ve been away for about 10 days but during that time I’ve seen 5 movies at the-
THEATER-
1) WILLIAM KUNSTLER: DISTURBING THE UNIVERSE- Premise by Netflix. “Filmmakers Sarah and
Emily Kunstler delve into the life of their father,
William Kunstler, whose controversial career and high-profile clients solidified his place in history as one of the most famous — and reviled — 20th-century lawyers. The documentary captures a deeply personal journey as the sisters trace their father’s shift from representing civil rights activists to defending accused rapists, Mafia bosses and terrorists.”
12/14/09- I was a guest speaker for a showing of this film in Lake Worth, Florida last week and I liked the film very much. While there may not be a whole lot of new material it was a great history lesson with great archival footage that only his family could have gotten. Highly recommended. TRDB.
2) INVICTUS- Premise by Netflix. “In this sports drama based on real-life events, director Clint Eastwood tells the story of what happened after the end of apartheid when newly elected president Nelson Mandela used the 1995 World Cup rugby matches to unite his people. Based on a book by John Carlin, the film stars Morgan Freeman as Mandela and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar, the captain of the scrappy South African team that makes a run for the championship.”
12/21/09- I saw this a few days ago in Florida and I was the only one who did not like it. I felt that it was way too Hollywood and therefore trivialized the great deeds that this man has accomplished. Matt Damon irritated me also. TRDB.
3) BROTHERS- Premise by Zap2it. “Siblings Sam and Tommy Cahill are as far apart as brothers can be; while Sam serves his country as a Marine, Tommy is a drifter who just got out of prison. When Sam is shot down and presumed dead in Afghanistan, Tommy vows to take care of Sam’s wife, Grace, and his children. Tommy and Grace become close, and when Sam unexpectedly returns home, the consequences of their actions threaten the foundation of the entire family.” Several great reviews.
12/21/09- I saw this in Florida a few days ago and liked it very much. Great study of family dynamics and great acting as well. I actually liked Natalie Portman for a change. TRDB.
4) PRECIOUS- Premise by Zap2it. “Pregnant by her own father for the second time, 16-year-old Claireece “Precious” Jones can neither read nor write and suffers constant abuse at the hands of her vicious mother . Precious instinctively sees a chance to turn her life around when she is offered the opportunity to transfer to an alternative school. Under the patient, firm guidance of her new teacher, Ms. Rain, Precious begins the journey from oppression to self-determination.” This film has been discussed and hyped so much for so long that I hope it meets it’s expectations. Early reviews say that the performances made the film special instead of the story itself.
12/23/09- I saw this a few days ago in Florida and liked it very much. The story was painful to watch but the acting was so superb that I really could enjoy it. TRDB.
5) UP IN THE AIR- Netflix had this to say– “Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) racks up major miles flying around the country firing employees on behalf of companies. But he faces losing the job he savors to Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick) — and losing the ability to escape emotional ties to anything. A connection he builds with Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga), however, might change his outlook on the future. Jason Reitman‘s smart comedy also stars Jason Bateman as Bingham’s boss, Craig.
12/23/09- I saw this today and liked it– some depth, some funny parts and also some poignant moments. TRDB.

VIEWED AT HOME-
1) WORLD’S GREATEST DAD- 2009. Premise by Netflix. “Play Preview After his son (Daryl Sabara) dies in an awkward freak accident, high school poetry teacher Lance (Robin Williams) ghostwrites a suicide note to spare the family embarrassment. But when the note becomes an unexpected hit, Lance sees a chance to resurrect his writing career. In a bid for literary fame, Lance writes his son’s journal and passes it off as his own. Writer-director Bob Goldthwait’s comedy debuted at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.” This film got fairly good reviews and I’ll see it.
12/10/09– I liked it a lot. One critic called the film “a mind blowing shot of black-comic genius” and I agree. TRDB. Netflix. 12/09
2) MATADOR- 1986. By Pedro Almodovar. With Antonio Banderas, Assumpta Serna and Nacho Martinez. About a bullfighter who can no longer fight because of an injury in the ring. He becomes obsessed with death and a love triangle. I liked the movie. Netflix. 12/09
3) THE HEADLESS WOMAN- Premise by Netflix. “After she runs over something with her car — maybe a dog, maybe a human — affluent dentist Verónica (María Onetto) suffers a strange breakdown and finds she can’t recognize familiar faces in her rural Argentine town. Director Lucrecia Martel‘s third feature, a loosely structured, visually complex reflection on grief, guilt and class relations, was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. Another film with an interesting premise and decent reviews.
12/21/09- I did NOT like it at all. Way too ambiguous and so little dialogue from the main character that the movie seemed ODD at best. TRDB.
4) THE GIRL FROM MONACO- Premise by Netflix. “Middle-aged lawyer Bertrand (Fabrice Luchini) chafes at the presence of Christophe (Roschdy Zem), a bodyguard assigned to protect him during a dangerous case. Things worsen when Bertrand catches the eye of free-spirited weather girl Audrey (Louise Bourgoin), Christophe’s old flame. Audrey brings out long-dormant feelings in the counselor, who finds himself competing against his guardian for her affections in this charming romantic comedy.” An interesting premise and OK reviews.
12/22/09- I enjoyed this movie a lot, especially the developing relationship between the attorney and his assigned bodyguard. TRDB.
5) BLIND DATE- Premise by Rotten Tomatoes. “Don and Janna are a married couple struggling to reconnect after the death of their daughter. They answer each other’s phony classified ads and begin an elaborate game of pretend on a series of blind dates, hoping that this ruse will allow them finally to talk openly about the demise of their relationship in the wake of tragedy.”
12/22/09- I liked it. A little slow at times and sad beyond sad but very well acted and sincere. Netflix Streaming. TRDB.
6) HERB AND DOROTHY- Premise by Rotten Tomatoes. “This documentary film tells the extraordinary story of Herb, a postal clerk, and Dorothy, a librarian — an ordinary couple of modest means who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history.” Good reviews.
12/23/09- I found this movie very interesting and I’d definitely recommend it. TRDB.

1) WHY AM I DOING THIS?- Premise by Zap2it. “Two down on their luck entertainers ponder the age old question.” Fair early reviews at best.
2) POLICE, ADJECTIVE- Premise by Zap2it. “A Romanian cop is reluctant to arrest a teen suspected of possessing and possibly selling marijuana.” Fairly good early reviews, although one reviewer said it’s boring and bring plenty of popcorn.
3) THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS- Premise by Zap2it. “Dr. Parnassus, the leader of a traveling show, has a dark secret. Thousands of years ago he traded the soul of his daughter, Valentina, to the devil. Now the devil has come to collect his prize. In order to save Valentina, Parnassus must make a final wager: Whoever collects five souls first will win Valentina’s. Tony, a man saved from hanging by Parnassus’ troupe, agrees to help collect them, with Valentina’s hand in marriage as the prize.” Described as a lovable mess of a movie but most liked it.

2) UNCERTAINTY- Premise by Zap2it. “A coin flip decides whether a young couple attends a Fourth of July bash or has a wild adventure in the city.” I saw only one early review and he called it bizarre and compelling.
Netflix said- “A young couple facing a life-changing decision, Bobby (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Kate (Lynn Collins), stand on the Brooklyn Bridge, toss a coin and let the outcome decide their holiday plans. The action unfolds in intercutting scenes of both possibilities. This creative cinematic puzzle from filmmakers Scott McGehee and David Siegel (Bee Season) reveals an intricate thriller as well as a tense relationship drama.”
12/3/09- Just saw the film and liked it a lot. TRDB

Staging a series of bombings, kidnappings and assassinations, the RAF waged a war against fascism with a direct assault against the powers of American imperialism and the fledgling German democracy.”

COMING TO NETFLIX ON TUESDAY, DEC. 15
1) HERB AND DOROTHY- Premise by Netflix. “Chronicling the story of unlikely art collectors Herb Vogel and Dorothy Vogel, filmmaker Megumi Sasaki demonstrates that it’s not necessary to be wealthy in order to build a significant collection in this fascinating documentary. A postal clerk and a librarian, the Vogels share a passion for art, which they pursued over decades, becoming two of the most important collectors of minimalist and conceptual art with more than 4,000 pieces.” Very good reviews.
2) THE GIRL FROM MONACO- Premise by Netflix.
3) INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS- Premise by Netflix. “A Jewish cinema owner (Mélanie Laurent) in occupied Paris is forced to host a Nazi movie premiere, where a radical group of American Jewish soldiers called the Basterds, led by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), plans to roll out a score-settling scheme. The face-off is about to go down — that’s if Col. Hans Landa aka “The Jew Hunter” (Christoph Waltz) doesn’t get in the way. Quentin Tarantino directs this World War II-set spaghetti Western.” I saw this and DID NOT like it at all.
4) THE HEADLESS WOMAN- Premise by Netflix. “After she runs over something with her car — maybe a dog, maybe a human — affluent dentist Verónica (María Onetto) suffers a strange breakdown and finds she can’t recognize familiar faces in her rural Argentine town. Ang Lee directs this fresh take on 1960s counterculture based on Elliot Tiber’s memoir by the same name. Eugene Levy, Imelda Staunton, Emile Hirsch and Jeffrey Dean Morgan co-star.” I had little interest in seeing this movie at the theater but I’ll catch it now.

No longer able to relate to each other, they reconnect when Don begins placing personal ads for Janna to respond to. They both role-play their parts, pretending to be strangers, a facade they hope can repair years of damage to their relationship. Tucci also directs this remake of Theo van Gogh’s 1996 film.” Fair reviews for this one but sounds interesting to me.
2) (500) DAYS OF SUMMER- Premise by Netflix. “When his girlfriend, Summer (Zooey Deschanel), unceremoniously dumps him, greeting-card copywriter and hopeless romantic Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) begins sifting through the year-plus worth of days they spent together, looking for clues to what went awry. Netflix said- “In this sports drama based on real-life events, director Clint Eastwood tells the story of what happened after the end of apartheid when newly elected president Nelson Mandela used the 1995 World Cup rugby matches to unite his people. Based on a book by John Carlin, the film stars Morgan Freeman as Mandela and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar, the captain of the scrappy South African team that makes a run for the championship.”
Very good reviews and I look forward to seeing this film.

Very good reviews.

Blake unexpectedly warms to Jean and a romance begins, but the singer soon finds himself at a crossroad that threatens what may be his last shot at happiness.”
Netflix said- “When small town reporter Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhaal) seeks out Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) — an alcoholic, seen-better-days country music legend — for an interview, they make a connection, and hard-living Blake sees a possible saving grace in a life with Jean and her young boy. DEAR FRIENDS:
PLEASE VIEW MY NEW WEB SITE AT- thereeldrbob.com
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I spent it in Baltimore and totally enjoyed myself. I also saw one movie on the train in each direction.
TWO NEW MOVIES THIS WEEK AT THE-
THEATER-
1) AN EDUCATION- Premise by Zap2it. “Despite her sheltered upbringing, Jenny is a teen with a bright future; she’s smart, pretty, and has aspirations of attending Oxford University. When David, a charming but much older suitor, motors into her life in a shiny automobile, Jenny gets a taste of adult life that she won’t soon forget.” Very good early reviews.
11/28/09- I just saw this and liked it a lot. Really about the education of a young impressionable girl outside of the classroom. TRDB.
2) THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PIPPA LEE- Written and directed by Rebecca Miller and starring Robin Wright Penn, Alan Arkin and several other stars as well. A very interesting study of Pippa herself and her attempt to escape her childhood traumas. The film is a different approach to suburban malaise. I liked the movie very much and highly recommend it. 12/09
________________________________________________________________________________________
VIEWED AT HOME (ACTUALLY THE FIRST TWO ON THE TRAIN GOING TO AND COMING FROM BALTIMORE)-
1) IS ANYBODY THERE?- Premise by Netflix. “Growing up in a seaside nursing home run by his parents takes its toll on 10-year-old Edward (
Bill Milner), but things begin to look up for the lonely boy when a retired magician (
Michael Caine) with a zest for life moves in. Set in the 1980s, this poignant tale follows the developing friendship between Clarence — a spirited old troublemaker hiding from his past — and death-obsessed Edward, a youngster unable to live life in the moment.”
This film got OK reviews and I plan to see it.11/27/09-
Just saw this and as far as I’m concerned Michael Caine was the only saving grace for this banal movie and I turned it off. Netflix. 11/09
2) LA FEMME NIKITA- 1990. By Luc Besson and starring Anne Parillaud. She plays a petty criminal who is convicted of murder. She is rehabilitated as an assassin in exchange for her prison sentence. I saw this years ago and loved it and I enjoyed it again but nowhere like the first time. Netflix. 11/09
3) THE LIMITS OF CONTROL- Premise by Netflix. “An enigmatic stranger (Isaach De Bankolé), with no friends to speak of and no one to trust, is on a shadowy criminal mission. His moves are always marked with the knowledge that the law is never far behind. Acclaimed indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch (Broken Flowers, Coffee and Cigarettes) writes and directs this tale, which is set against the backdrop of contemporary Spain. Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt and Gael García Bernal co-star.” Mostly poor reviews but a few very good ones so I’ll give it a try.
11/28/09- I just saw this movie. As it says above, De Bankole has numerous encounters with odd people in Madrid, all of whom are apparently giving him information regarding his mission. Only problem is that nothing ever happens and I finally turned the movie off. Netflix. TRDB
4) MAN, WOMAN AND THE WALL- Premise by Netflix. “After moving into a new apartment, geeky reporter Ryo (Keita Ohno) quickly develops an obsession with his sexy next-door neighbor Satsuki (Aoi Sola). Ryo’s eavesdropping and explicit fantasies surprisingly lead to a potential relationship with his dream girl. Meanwhile, throughout the course of this highly provocative Japanese movie, Satsuki becomes increasingly panic-stricken over obscene phone calls she’s receiving from an unknown pervert.”
11/29/09- I saw this movie and felt that it was interesting despite the scary premise above. TRDB.
5) ANGRY HARVEST- Premise by Netflix. “Oscar nominated as Best Foreign Language Film, this unsettling character study set in World War II stars Armin Mueller-Stahl as Leon Wolny, a simple but thriving Polish farmer torn between his scruples and sexual desire. When Leon happens upon a Jewish woman (Elisabeth Trissenaar) who’s jumped from a train bound for a Nazi death camp, he takes her in and shelters her in his cellar. But everything changes once his long-suppressed libido surfaces.”
11/29/09- I saw this and liked it a lot. In particular the way their relationship changed as time went on from her being totally dependent on him to one of mutual dependency. TRDB.
6) I’LL COME RUNNING- 2008. Co-written and directed by Spencer Parsons. Starring Melonie Diaz as a young Texan woman who has a brief romantic fling with a young man from Denmark shortly before he is due to return home. Tragic circumstances compel her to visit Denmark shortly after. Very good acting and an interesting story and I liked it. Comcast On-Demand. 11/09
7) PRAY THE DEVIL BACK TO HELL- Premise by Netflix. “Director Gini Reticker and producer Abigail E. Disney’s documentary tells the story of the thousands of Liberian women, both Christian and Muslim, who helped end the bloody civil war in 2003 that killed over 200,000 people. Through nonviolent protests, these brave women forced a resolution in the peace talks, and their efforts led to the election of Africa’s first female head of state, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.”
11/30/09- I saw this and while the topic is certainly important I felt that the movie lacked interest. I can’t recommend it. TRDB.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
COMING TO NETFLIX NEXT TUESDAY, DEC. 8-
1) JULIE AND JULIA- Premise by Netflix. “Play Preview Amy Adams stars in this truth-inspired tale as Julie Powell, a disenchanted government secretary who decides to enliven her uneventful life by cooking all 524 recipes outlined in Julia Child’s culinary classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Based on Powell’s book Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen, director Nora Ephron‘s heartwarming dramedy also stars Meryl Streep as legendary chef Child.” This film got mixed reviews- VERY mixed. I plan to see it.
2) LION’S DEN- Premise by Netflix. “After waking to find her apartment a bloody mess, with her ex-lover Nahuel dead and her ex-lover Ramiro (Rodrigo Santoro) wounded, Julia (Martina Gusman) finds herself pregnant and in prison. Incarcerated with other mothers, she gives birth and tries to raise her son behind bars. As she continues to push for a new trial, Julia also deals with her formerly estranged mother, Sofía (Elli Medeiros), who now wants to take her son from her.” Good reviews for this odd sounding movie.
3) PUBLIC ENEMIES- Premise by Netflix. “In the shadow of the Great Depression, criminal minds are thriving — notorious men like John Dillinger (Johnny Depp), “Baby Face” Nelson (Stephen Graham) and “Pretty Boy” Floyd (Channing Tatum) — and it’s up to J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) and the FBI to bring them down. Michael Mann directs this gritty crime drama based on the book by Bryan Burrough. Christian Bale, Giovanni Ribisi and Leelee Sobieski co-star.” I called this movie a mediocre story about Dillinger that was meant to be an epic film but failed. Also, the camera moved so much that you might need a scopolamine patch or some dramamine.
4) THE COVE- Premise by Netflix. “This riveting documentary (winner of the Audience Award at Sundance) follows a group of animal activists to a scenic cove in Taijii, Japan, where they use surveillance equipment to capture footage of a secretive and heavily guarded operation run by the world’s largest supplier of dolphins. As the daring group risks their lives to expose the horrifying truths behind the capture of dolphins for the lucrative tourist industry, they also uncover an environmental catastrophe.” I saw this and felt it was very well done and I enjoyed it a lot.
5) WORLD’S GREATEST DAD- Premise by Netflix. Writer-director Bob Goldthwait‘s comedy debuted at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.” This film got fairly good reviews and I’ll see it.
6) The Baader-Meinhoff Complex- Premise by Netflix. “Uli Edel directs this Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nominee charting the birth of West Germany’s Red Army Faction, a radical left-wing terrorist group formed in the late 1960s amid a climate of revolution and a fallen generation. Staging a series of bombings, kidnappings and assassinations, the RAF waged a war against fascism with a direct assault against the powers of American imperialism and the fledgling German democracy.” This movie has received very good reviews and I plan to see it.

1) THE ONLY GOOD INDIAN- Premise by Zap2it. “In the early 1900’s a Native American boy escapes from a training camp and a Cherokee bounty hunter, who has adopted the white man’s way of life, is sent to find him. A tragic incident spurs the bounty hunter’s nemesis, a famous Indian fighter, to search for him and the boy.” Very good early reviews.
2) BROTHERS- Premise by Zap2it.
3) EVERYBODY’S FINE- Premise by Zap2it. “Eight months after the death of his wife, Frank Goode looks forward to a reunion with his four adult children. When all of them cancel their visits at the last minute, Frank, against the advice of his doctor, sets out on a road trip to reconnect with his offspring. As he visits each one in turn, Frank finds that his children’s lives are not quite as picture-perfect as they’ve made them out to be.” Mixed reviews, mostly good. I saw the trailer and it looked good.
4) PAA- Premise by Zap2it. “A politician’s 13-year-old son has a rare disorder that makes him appear to be a grown man.” I haven’t seen any reviews as yet.
5) THE STRIP- Premise by Zap2it. “The employees of an electronic store face the reality of growing up when one of them gets married.” No reviews as yet.
6) UP IN THE AIR- Premise by Zap2it. “When a new co-worker wants to put an end to corporate downsizing expert Ryan Bingham’s frequent travel, he offers to take her on a tour to demonstrate the importance of face-to-face meetings. As he mentors his colleague, he also arranges a series of hookups with a fellow frequent traveler, and unexpectedly finds he’s developing true feelings for her. Also unexpectedly, Ryan begins to see the people he routinely fires in a new light.” Very good early reviews.
Premise by Netflix. “It’s all coming together for corporate hatchet man Ryan Bingham (George Clooney): He’s about to reach his goal of earning 1 million frequent flyer miles just as he meets the frequent-flying businesswoman (Vera Farmiga) of his dreams. But Ryan’s plans hit some turbulence when his prized travel budget is downsized in writer-director Jason Reitman‘s high-flying comedy, which also stars Jason Bateman as Bingham’s boss, Craig.”

1) KILLING KASZTNER- Premise by Netflix. “Gaylen Ross‘s compelling documentary explores the story of Dr. Israel Kasztner, a Hungarian Jew who saved more than 1,600 Jews during the Holocaust by buying their freedom from Nazi Adolf Eichmann. With important trial documents and witness interviews, Ross looks at Kasztner’s 1954 trial, which started as a libel case with him as a plaintiff, but ended as a war crime tribunal with him as a defendant.” Very good reviews.
2) COCO BEFORE CHANEL- Premise by Netflix. “Audrey Tautou stars as legendary French designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in this lively biopic that explores the fashion icon’s storied ascension from orphan to seamstress and cabaret singer and ultimately, the queen of Parisian haute couture. 1) THE WAY WE GET BY- 2009. Premise by Netflix. “Whenever Iraq War veterans return to the U.S. via Bangor, Maine, senior citizen volunteers Bill, Joan and Jerry are at the airport to greet them. This moving documentary profiles their personal stories and the impact they’ve made on countless lives. As they share their kindness and support through handshakes and hugs, these compassionate greeters strengthen their community, their country and themselves. ”
11/20/09–2009. Directed by Aron Gaudet. I just saw this and while it was very interesting to watch for about 45 minutes the second half became redundant for me. It was more about a group of lonely people from Bangor, Maine, most living on their own, all elderly, some veterans and some women who find meaning in their lives by greeting soldiers who are going to or coming from Iraq to thank them for what they’ve done or are about to do. Netflix Streaming. TRDB
2) FOOD, INC. – Premise by Netflix. “Drawing on Eric Schlosser‘s Fast Food Nation and Michael Pollan‘s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, director Robert Kenner‘s documentary explores the food industry’s detrimental effects on our health and environment. Kenner spotlights the men and women who are working to reform an industry rife with monopolies, questionable interpretations of laws and subsidies, political ties and rising rates of E. coli outbreaks.”
11/22/09-I just saw this, found it very informative and a scathing indictment of the industry and it’s labor and safety practices. Netflix. TRDB.
3) BALLAST- Premise by Netflix. 2008. ”In a small Mississippi Delta township, one of the poorest places in the rich nation of America, a single mother struggles to provide for herself and her son. Their fragile lives are tragically ripped apart when an extreme act of violence occurs. Michael J. Smith Sr., JimMyron Ross, Tarra Riggs and Johnny McPhail star in this lyrical drama (nominated for multiple Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature) that explores long-standing conflicts and the meaning of family.”
From RottenTomatoes- “A searing debut by director Lance Hammer, this subtle and contemplative Mississippi set drama lingers long after its conclusion.”
11/23/09- I just saw this and liked it, although not as much as the critics and in particular I had some trouble getting into the movie at first but the second half was much better. TRDB.
4)
THE ANSWER MAN- Premise by Netflix. “He wants to be left alone, but Arlen Faber (Jeff Daniels), author of a best-selling book about spirituality, finds himself harassed by single mom Elizabeth (Lauren Graham) and recovering addict Kris (Lou Taylor Pucci), who think Arlen can solve their problems. Arlen knows he has no real answers, but as he and Elizabeth fall in love, they all discover hope in unexpected places. John Hindman directs this romantic drama.” This film got generally POOR reviews BUT a few very good ones.11/23/09- Just saw this movie and it is incredibly stupid. Miss it!! TRDB
5) THREE MONKEYS- Premise by Netflix. “When a politician accidentally runs down a pedestrian, he pays his driver to take the rap and serve the jail term. But as the driver’s family grows restless, seeing, hearing and speaking the truth cannot be ignored. Who will ultimately pay the price? Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, this provocative Turkish drama stars Hatice Aslan and Yavuz Bingol and won the Best Director Award at Cannes Film Festival.” Some called it plodding but others said it was very good. I’ll get it.11/24/09- I just saw this movie and LOVED it. Very subtle and very powerful at the same time. Terrific acting as well. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

1) HIDING AND SEEKING- 2004. Directed by Menachem Daum, this documentary is about an American Jew who is concerned that his adult sons who live with their families in Orthodox communities in Israel may be learning to hate those who are not Jewish, just like fanatics in other religions. 3)
THE ENGLISH SURGEON- Premise by Netflix. “Get acquainted with the work of British brain surgeon Henry Marsh, who, since his haunting first visit to a Russian hospital in the early 1990s, has been devoted to founding a quality brain surgery clinic in the former Soviet Union. Marsh cobbles together secondhand tools and used equipment from hospitals in the U.K. to treat patients in need, such as Marian, a Ukrainian man for whom Marsh is his greatest hope.” Excellent reviews for this documentary.11/9/09–Just saw this and here’s what I said- ” Directed by Geoffrey Smith and about Henry Marsh, a British neurosurgeon who does volunteer work in the Ukraine. The film is about the frustration of practicing in an undeveloped area, particularly when there are political problems in play. A few patients are explored in detail, including close-ups of surgery and the film is not for the squeamish. It’s really about a day in the life of a neurosurgeon and I liked it. Netflix. 11/09
4) A WOMAN IN BERLIN- 2008. Premise by Netflix. “Play Preview Based on the best-selling diaries of an anonymous German woman who survived the Soviet invasion of Berlin at the end of World War II, this gripping drama tells the story of a photojournalist’s (Nina Hoss) forbidden relationship with a Soviet officer (Yevgeni Sidikhin). After being sexually assaulted by members of the invading Red Army, she turns to the officer for support, but soon finds herself falling for him.” This movie has received very good reviews and I look forward to seeing it. ________________________________________________________________________________________

Cecilia Miniucchi makes her feature debut with this achingly honest romance.”
I liked the movie and recommend it.
2) IS ANYBODY THERE?- Premise by Netflix. “Growing up in a seaside nursing home run by his parents takes its toll on 10-year-old Edward (

November 11th, 2009
NOV. 5, 2009
DEAR FRIENDS-
PLEASE CHECK OUT MY NEW WEBSITE AT thereeldrbob.com
I saw TWO AND A HALF NEW movies (I walked out of one half way through) this week at the-
THEATER-
1) TRUCKER- 2008. Directed by James Mottern and starring Michelle Monaghan. About a woman who is a long distance truck driver and who is unable to make lasting relationships. Her 11yr. old son who has lived with the father and not seen his mother is suddenly deposited on her doorstep. The story is about their relationship and it is NOT a typical movie of it’s kind. Very good. 10/09
2) THE MAID- By Sebastian Silva and starring Catalina Saavedra. About a 41yr. old woman who has been a live-in maid for a well-to-do Chilean family for 20yrs. Either depressed or psycho she pouts through most of the movie and has a hostile dependent relationship with each member of the family. It’s only when an assistant hired to help her takes a liking to her and shows her that there’s more to life than taking care of someone else’s family that she begins to smile and take an interest in life. I liked the movie but felt that this woman’s turnaround was too abrupt (at the end of the movie) to be believable and could have been done more gradually.
3) (UNTITLED)- Directed by Jonathan Parker and starring Adam Goldberg and Marley Shelton. I just saw this movie and for the first time in years I walked out. Miserable, attempted farce of the art industry but the movie was a farce. The film is “untitled” and would be better off unseen. Thank me for this review now. 11/09 TRDB
VIEWED AT HOME-
1) ALICE DOESN’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE- Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Ellen Burstyn, Harvey Keitel and Kris Kristofferson. About a young mother whose abusive husband is killed in an accident. She sells her house and hits the road with her 11yr. old son with the goal of reaching Monterey, where she was last happy. The movie is about her emotional trip and the people she meets. Wonderful classic. Netflix Streaming. 11/09
2)
AFTERWARDS- Premise by Netflix. “Hotshot New York attorney Nathan Del Amico (Romain Duris) is skeptical when the strange Doctor Kay (John Malkovich) claims that he can sense when someone is about to die — until inexplicable events cause Nathan to change his mind. Now believing that he sees signs of his own death, Del Amico takes the doctor’s advice and begins making amends with his ex-wife (Evangeline Lilly) before it’s too late. Gilles Bourdos directs this stylish thriller.” No reviews as yet. TRDB
11/2/09– I just finished seeing this film and I have to wonder what the hell John Malkovich was thinking when he took this role. I turned it off. Netflix. TRDB
3) MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY- Premise by Netflix. “Waking from a one-night stand that neither remembers, Micah (Wyatt Cenac) and Joanne (Tracey Heggins) find themselves wandering the streets of San Francisco, sharing coffee and conversation and discovering that they share an unexpected deep connection. Barry Jenkins (nominated for a Best First Feature Independent Spirit Award) directs this poetic tale of love and sex that blends the elements of old-fashioned romance with the sensibilities of modern-day relationships.” Excellent reviews. TRDB.
11/2/09- I saw this and here’s what I said- “Written and directed by Barry Jenkins and starring Tracey Heggins and Wyatt Cenac. About an African American couple who wake up in the morning at a friend’s home after a one night stand. She has a live-in boyfriend who is away and makes it clear that this is only a one time deal although he pursues the relationship. They spend the entire next day together. Enjoyable movie. Netflix. 11/09 TRDB
4) DANGEROUS LIASONS- 1988. Directed by Stephen Frears. Starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer. Close and Malkovich play a pair of scheming nobles in Paris and in particular Close bets Malkovich that he can’t bed Pfeiffer and get written proof of the conquest. Considered somewhat of a classic, I did enjoy the film but not with rave reviews. Netflix Streaming. 11/09___________________________________________________________________________________
COMING TO NETFLIX NEXT TUESDAY, NOV. 10-
1) A WOMAN IN BERLIN- 2008. Premise by Netflix. “
Play Preview Based on the best-selling diaries of an anonymous German woman who survived the Soviet invasion of Berlin at the end of World War II, this gripping drama tells the story of a photojournalist’s (
Nina Hoss) forbidden relationship with a Soviet officer (
Yevgeni Sidikhin). After being sexually assaulted by members of the invading Red Army, she turns to the officer for support, but soon finds herself falling for him.”
This movie has received very good reviews and I look forward to seeing it.
2) BALLAST- Premise by Netflix. 2008. “In a small Mississippi Delta township, one of the poorest places in the rich nation of America, a single mother struggles to provide for herself and her son. Their fragile lives are tragically ripped apart when an extreme act of violence occurs.
Michael J. Smith Sr.,
JimMyron Ross,
Tarra Riggs and
Johnny McPhail star in this lyrical drama (nominated for multiple Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature) that explores long-standing conflicts and the meaning of family.”
From RottenTomatoes- “A searing debut by director Lance Hammer, this subtle and contemplative Mississippi set drama lingers long after its conclusion.”
3) THE MERRY GENTLEMAN- 2008. Premise by Netflix. “
Play Preview Kelly Macdonald stars as a young wife who escapes an abusive marriage to begin a new life on her own. But when she finds herself a witness to a murder, she develops an unusual bond with a glum hit man. Beloved actor
Michael Keaton makes his directorial debut with this quirky drama from a script by Ron Lazzeretti. The film premiered at the famed Sundance Film Festival in 2008.”
I saw this and liked it a lot.

OPENING THIS WEEK-
1) ENDGAME- Premise by Zap2it. “During the late 1980s a British mining concern initiates covert peace talks among factions in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid.” Very good early reviews.
2) PRECIOUS- Premise by Zap2it.
3) THAT EVENING SUN- Premise by Zap2it. “Vowing not to die in a nursing home, Abner Meecham leaves the facility and returns to his Tennessee farm. There, an unpleasant surprise awaits him: Abner’s son has leased the property to ne’er-do-well Lonzo Choat and his white-trash family. Abner suspects that the Choats will not be able to afford the farm, and moves into a shack to await their departure. Tensions escalate between Abner and Lonzo, who are each determined not to give in to the other.” Great early reviews.

FLORIDA- At the Emerging Cinemas of Lake Worth
1) AMREEKA- The film is about a divorced Palestinian woman from Bethlehem who takes her teenage son and moves to a small town near Chicago and about their life there with all of the difficulties in adjusting. I felt that the acting was excellent and the story very realistic and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FEATURE.
2) STILL WALKING- Here’s the premise from the original website- “Fifteen years ago, Junpei, the youngest son of the Yokoyama family died while rescuing a boy from drowning. On the anniversary of his death, the remaining siblings visit the quaint home of their parents with their families in tow. Over the course of a beautiful day, new relatives become acquainted telling stories and squabbling over sizzling tempura. Recalling the delicate splendor of Yasujiro Ozu’s Tokyo Story, Koreeda shows complete mastery of his characters while revealing the complex dynamics of an ultimately loving family with humor and warmth.” This film has received excellent reviews and I’ll see it as soon as I can.

DEAR FRIENDS-
PLEASE CHECK OUT MY NEW WEBSITE AT thereeldrbob.com
I was in Florida for 4 days and managed to see 3 movies that I’ve been looking for, all in our town of Lake Worth.
1) SERAPHINE- 2009. Directed by Martin Provost and starring Yolande Moreau and Ulrich Tukur. The artist Seraphine Louis is working as a maid at a guest home when her painting is discovered by the German art critic Wilhelm Unde who then takes her under his wing. Good movie but not great as some had said as I found it a bit too slow. 10/09
2) LORNA’S SILENCE- Directed by Jean-Pierre Dardenne and starring Arta Dobroshi. About a woman from Albania who has just become a Belgian citizen and has married a junky in a sham marriage in order to raise money for a dream of hers. I felt that the movie was just OK. 10/09
3) CLOUD 9- 2008. Germany. Directed by Andreas Dresen and starring Steffi Kuhnert and Horst Rehbert. Sixty year old Inge begins an affair with a much older man and insists on telling her long time lover (30 years) about it. Lots of very naked geriatric sex, certainly a new frontier for the cinema. Very good. 10/09

VIEWED AT HOME-
1)
IL DIVO–
Premise by Netflix. “Paolo Sorrentino directs this superbly entertaining docudrama about the colorful life and political career of Italy’s Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti and his party’s decades-long throttlehold on Italian politics. Highlighting accusations of mafia ties, Sorrentino pulls no punches as he lays any number of corruption scandals and even political assassinations at the politician’s feet, all with a sly sense of humor. Toni Servillo stars as Andreotti.” Great reviews. TRDB.
**** I just saw this one and here’s what I said- ” One critic said that the movie should come with a set of Cliff Notes to explain what was going on in Italy at the time and I AGREE. I turned it off halfway.” TRDB. Netflix Streaming. 10/09
2) JERICHOW– Premise by Netflix. “While in his hometown for his mother’s funeral, broke Afghan-Soviet war veteran Thomas (Benno Fürmann) winds up meeting and working for passionate Turk Ali (Hilmi Sözer), who needs a driver to help him keep tabs on his chain of snack bars. But when Thomas meets Ali’s gorgeous German wife (Nina Hoss) and the sparks fly, he enters a passionate affair with her that threatens his new livelihood and friendship with the perpetually jealous Ali.” Very good reviews. TRDB.
**** I just saw this remake of “The Postman Always Rings Twice” and l liked the movie yet one more time. Netflix Streaming. 10/09 TRDB
3) DON’T LOOK DOWN– 2008. Argentina. Directed by Eliseo Subiela (Man Facing Southeast) and starring Antonella Costa and Leandro Stivelman. A young man meets a somewhat older woman by accident when he sleepwalks and literally falls into her bed. She educates him in the ways of love and sex through spirituality. I liked the movie. Netflix. 10/09
4) SHOW ME LOVE– 1998. Premise by Netflix. “Elin (Alexandra Dahlstrom) and Agnes (Rebecka Liljeberg) are social opposites. While Elin is gorgeous, lively and wildly popular at school, Agnes is sullen, lonely and rejected as a nerdy lesbian. But when Agnes develops a crush on Elin, the exploration of love between them alleviates Elin’s perpetual boredom. This Swedish award-winner reflects the joy and pain of relationships, the insecurity of youth and the courage it takes to be different.”
Here’s my review- SHOW ME LOVE- 1998. Sweden. Directed by Lukas Moodysson and starring Alexandra Dahlstrom and Rebecca Liljeberg. About two teenage girls in Sweden dealing with sexual feelings, fitting in with peers, and their feelings for each other. Very good depiction of teen angst in general, Swedish or otherwise. Netflix Streaming. 10/09

COMING TO NETFLIX ON TUESDAY, NOV. 3-
1)
LEMON TREE– Premise by Netflix. “A Palestinian widow (
Hiam Abbass) fights to keep her lemon grove from being uprooted when Israeli security forces declare it a threat to the Israeli defense minister living next door (
Doron Tavory) in this foreign-language drama based on a true story. Teaming with a young lawyer (
Ali Suliman), the widow takes her case to the Israeli Supreme Court. But in the process of seeking justice, she’s forced to hide the forbidden bond growing between them.”
I saw this movie a few months ago and would recommend it highly.
2)
THE ENGLISH SURGEON– Premise by Netflix. “Get acquainted with the work of British brain surgeon
Henry Marsh, who, since his haunting first visit to a Russian hospital in the early 1990’s, has been devoted to founding a quality brain surgery clinic in the former Soviet Union. Marsh cobbles together secondhand tools and used equipment from hospitals in the U.K. to treat patients in need, such as Marian, a Ukrainian man for whom Marsh is his greatest hope.”
Excellent reviews for this documentary.
3)
UNMISTAKEN CHILD– Premise by Netflix. “Filmmaker
Nati Baratz follows the spellbinding journey of Tibetan Buddhist monk
Tenzin Zopa as he travels far and wide to identify the child who is the reincarnation of his deceased master, Lama Konchog. Acting on instructions from the Dalai Lama, the shy Zopa relies on astrology, dreams and other signs to locate the child, knowing that if he succeeds, he must also convince the boy’s parents to release their child into his care.”
Very good reviews and highly recommended.
4)
WHERE GOD LEFT HIS SHOES– Premise by Netflix. “A tight-knit family is forced onto the streets of New York City and into a homeless shelter in this heartfelt Tribeca Film Festival selection from director
Salvatore Stabile. With Christmas Eve fast approaching, an ex-boxer (
John Leguizamo) is buoyed by the prospect of moving his wife (
Leonor Varela) and two children (
David Castro and
Samantha M. Rose) into the relative warmth of a nearby housing project. But first, he’ll need a miracle.”
Very good reviews.
5)
FOOD, INC.- Premise by Netflix. “Drawing on
Eric Schlosser‘s
Fast Food Nation and
Michael Pollan‘s
The Omnivore’s Dilemma, director
Robert Kenner‘s documentary explores the food industry’s detrimental effects on our health and environment. Kenner spotlights the men and women who are working to reform an industry rife with monopolies, questionable interpretations of laws and subsidies, political ties and rising rates of
E. coli outbreaks.”
Good documentary for anybody who eats.
6)
THE ANSWER MAN– Premise by Netflix. “He wants to be left alone, but Arlen Faber (
Jeff Daniels), author of a best-selling book about spirituality, finds himself harassed by single mom Elizabeth (
Lauren Graham) and recovering addict Kris (
Lou Taylor Pucci), who think Arlen can solve their problems. Arlen knows he has no real answers, but as he and Elizabeth fall in love, they all discover hope in unexpected places.
John Hindman directs this romantic drama.”
This film got generally POOR reviews BUT a few very good ones.
7)
PARAISO TRAVEL– Premise by Netflix. “After a long journey from Colombia to a new life in New York City, Marlon (
Aldemar Correa) is separated from his beloved, Reina (
Angelica Blandon), and must fend for his own in the dangerous streets of Queens, where he gets a menial job in a restaurant. While flashbacks reveal details of the couple’s trek to America, Marlon starts to fall for an aspiring singer (
Margarita Rosa de Francisco) in this gripping drama that also stars
John Leguizamo.”
I saw this last week on Netflix Streaming and liked it very much.

No specific reviews yet but I’ve heard through the grapevine that it’s good.
2) STORM– Premise by RottenTomatoes- ” Hannah Maynard, prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague, is leading a trial against a former commander of the Yugoslavian National Army who is accused of the deportation and later killing of dozens of Bosnian-Muslim civilians. When a key witness commits suicide, it looks like the case will unravel, however Hannah refuses to give in.” I saw 2 reviews, one up and one down. The down one said it was too self righteous.

Siegel, a former editor-in-chief of “fake news” paper The Onion. Also starring Kevin Corrigan as Sal, Michael Rapaport as Philadelphia Phil and Marcia Jean Kurtz as Theresa, the film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.” I’d see this if I was in Florida.

DEAR FRIENDS-
PLEASE CHECK OUT MY NEW WEBSITE AT thereeldrbob.com
I’ll be out of town for a few days and so this issue will be sent out a few days early and some of the films playing locally will not be included. I saw ONE new film at the-
THEATER-
1) A SERIOUS MAN- 2009. By Joel and Ethan Coen. A caricature of a man whose life seems to be falling apart. Problems with his wife (she’s leaving him for a friend of theirs), his kids, and also at work. He consults with various rabbis in a vain attempt to understand what life is all about and what God wants from him. I found the film way over the top, even for a caricature, and not very funny as all the “funny” parts were at someone’s expense. I think that the film will be offensive to many people, Jews AND non-Jews alike. 10/09
VIEWED AT HOME-
1) SAVE ME- 2007. Premise by Netflix. “Mark (
Chad Allen) is a young gay man who’s hit rock bottom. Gayle (
Judith Light) and her husband, Ted (
Stephen Lang), welcome him to Genesis House, a Christian haven for men like Mark to get on the right path — the straight path. When Mark’s mentor, Scott (
Robert Gant), becomes too intimate, Gayle and Ted must face some uncomfortable realities. Only Mark and Scott know where their future lives will take them beyond Genesis House.”
I liked the movie and found it very believable. TRDB. Netflix. 10/09
2) THE PROPOSAL- 2009. Directed by Anne Fletcher. With Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. Bullock plays a high powered big city editor and he her assistant. When she is threatened with deportation to Canada she coerces him to marry her so she can stay in the US. Perhaps I’m a sap but as trivial as this movie was at times, I laughed out loud a few times and I think it’s worth watching. Netflix. 10/09
3) VANAJA- 2006. India. Directed by Rajnesh Domalpalli and starring Mamatha Bhukya. About a very poor 15yr. old girl who goes to work as a servant to for a wealthy mistress. After she is raped and becomes pregnant by her patron’s son all of the relationships change. Very good acting, some good Burra Katha dancing but ultimately a story about the caste system. I liked the movie a lot. Netflix. 10/09
4) KILOMETRE ZERO- 2005. Directed by Hiner saleem and starring Nazmi Kirik. About a man who is taken from his family in Iraqi Kurdistan and forced to fight with the Iraqi army. He is selected to deliver the body of a fallen comrade to his family and he and a driver go on a surreal journey. Very good movie and certainly another profound anti-war film. 10/09
5) WHITE NIGHT WEDDING- 2008. The movie takes place in northern Iceland where it remains light all day in the summer. The story is about a couple about to be married where the man is much older than the woman and her parents are dead set against the union. The story is told with many flashbacks to his first marriage. An unusual cast of characters. I liked it. Netflix. 10/09
6) PARAISO TRAVEL- Directed by Simon Brand and starring Aldemar Correa. About a young man who leaves Colombia with his girl friend and comes to NY illegally. They are separated shortly after arrival and he must fend for himself for the first time. An excellent depiction of what it’s like traveling here illegally and what life is like for illegal immigrants in general. Good movie. Netflix Streaming. 10/09

Barry Jenkins (nominated for a Best First Feature Independent Spirit Award) directs this poetic tale of love and sex that blends the elements of old-fashioned romance with the sensibilities of modern-day relationships.”
Excellent reviews.
2) IL DIVO- Premise by Netflix. “
Paolo Sorrentino directs this superbly entertaining docudrama about the colorful life and political career of Italy’s Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti and his party’s decades-long throttlehold on Italian politics. Highlighting accusations of mafia ties, Sorrentino pulls no punches as he lays any number of corruption scandals and even political assassinations at the politician’s feet, all with a sly sense of humor.

Great reviews.

Very good reviews.

Romain Duris) is skeptical when the strange Doctor Kay (
John Malkovich) claims that he can sense when someone is about to die — until inexplicable events cause Nathan to change his mind. Now believing that he sees signs of his own death, Del Amico takes the doctor’s advice and begins making amends with his ex-wife (
Evangeline Lilly) before it’s too late.
Gilles Bourdos directs this stylish thriller.”
No reviews as yet.

OPENING THIS WEEK-
1) UNTITLED- Premise by Zap2it. “Adrian is an avant-garde music composer whose poorly attended concerts contrast wildly with his brother Josh’s great success as a commercial artist. Adrian’s luck appears to change when Josh introduces him to Madeleine, an art dealer who sells Josh’s work. Adrian and Madeleine begin a torrid affair, but when Josh learns about the relationship and Madeleine stops exhibiting his artwork, the stage is set for a showdown between siblings.” Very few reviews but mixed so far. Sounds interesting to me.
2) AMELIA- Premise by Zap2it. “In the summer of 1937, famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart journeys into history in her attempt to become the first woman to circumnavigate the globe.” No early reviews.
3) KILLING KASZTZNER: THE JEW WHO DEALT WITH NAZIS- Premise by Zap2it. “Right-wing extremists murder a Budapest lawyer who negotiated with the Nazis to save the lives of more than 1,600 Jews during World War II.” I read only one review and it was very good.

NO NEW MOVIES for me this week but there WERE a few that I-
VIEWED AT HOME-
1) THE THIEF- 1997. Russia. Written and directed by Pavel Ciukhraj. About a young widow with a young son who meets and falls for a handsome man while on a train. It turns out he is not exactly what she expected. Very good. Netflix. 10/09

3) THIS GIRL’S LIFE- 2003. Directed by Ash Baron-Cohen and starring Juliette Marquis who plays a porn star and James Woods who plays her father, suffering from Parkinson’s disease. The movie is primarily about her life. She eventually forms her own company (Sex Investigation Agency), servicing women who want to know if their spouse or lover is faithful or can be seduced by a beauty. Interesting and I liked it. There was some soft core porno but it was not the main event. Netflix Streaming. 10/09
4) ANVIL: THE STORY OF ANVIL- 2008. Directed by Sasha Gervasi. A documentary about the heavy metal group Anvil, wildly popular but went downhill fast. I didn’t like the music, the group, or the movie and turned it off. Netflix. 10/09
5) HE WHO MUST DIE (CELUI QUI DOIT MOURIR)- 1957. Directed by Jules Dassin and co-written by Dassin and Ben Barzman. About a Greek village in the 1920’s that is occupied by the Turks. The village conducts a passion play each year and characters are chosen by the village elders to play crucial parts. The plot of the film is actually a reenactment of the real story, with the villagers playing out their biblical roles in a real life situation. Very good. DVD from a private source. 10/09
6) ADORATION- 2009. By Atom Egoyan and starring Devon Bostick. About an adolescent boy who attempts to make sense of his parent’s early death and in the process, while working on a French class project he creates a fictional story that gets picked up on the Internet. Good drama. Netflix. 10/09

Tim Disney, the inspiring tale also stars
Alfre Woodard as Dee’s mother, Alma,
Tim Blake Nelson as ACLU attorney David Cohen and
Will Patton as retired narcotics officer Sam Conroy.”
Good reviews.

THE REEL DR BOB
The Reel Dr. Bob
October 15th, 2009
Oct. 7, 2009 (Earlier than usual this week)
DEAR FRIENDS-
PLEASE CHECK OUT MY NEW WEBSITE AT- www.thereeldrbob.com
ONE NEW MOVIE for me this week at the-
THEATRE-
1) CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY- A new expose by Michael Moore similar to “Roger and Me” and “Sicko” where Moore mounts a relentless attack on some topic, this time the “evils” of capitalism. I did, however, enjoy the movie. 10/09

VIEWED AT HOME-
1) AWAY WE GO- 2009. Directed by Sam Mendes. About an unmarried couple in a long term relationship who are expecting. They travel to several cities to visit friends and relatives and to find a place to settle and raise their child. This movie got only fair reviews but public opinion kept it around for a while. I thought it was a fair drama/comedy. Netflix. 10/09
2)THE BROTHERS BLOOM- 2008. With Adrian Brody, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel Weisz. Brody and Ruffalo play con men brothers who are working on their last con job together as Brody plans to retire. OK for about a half hour and then got real boring and I turned it off. Netflix. 10/09
3) DAVID AND LAYLA- 2005. By Jay Jonroy. About a Jewish cable TV sex show host and his attempt to develop a relationship with a beautiful Arab refugee. Incredibly stupid movie and I turned it off. Netflix Streaming. 10/09
4) RACHIDA- 2002. Written and directed by Yamina Bachir and starring Djouadi Ibtissem. About a young woman, a teacher in Algeria, who refuses to carry a bomb into her school in the 1990’s during their civil war. The film is about her life and the life of other women in this society and in particular how she copes after she flees to avoid punishment by the terrorists. A good drama with insight about what it’s like to live under these conditions. Netflix Streaming. 10/09

COMING TO NETFLIX NEXT TUESDAY, OCT. 13-
1) AMERICAN VIOLET- Premise by Netflix. “Inspired by true events, this penetrating drama centers on Dee Roberts (
Nicole Beharie), a 24-year-old mother of four who’s forced to take on a corrupt district attorney (
Michael O’Keefe) when she’s unjustly prosecuted in a large-scale drug case. Directed by
Tim Disney, the inspiring tale also stars
Alfre Woodard as Dee’s mother, Alma,
Tim Blake Nelson as ACLU attorney David Cohen and
Will Patton as retired narcotics officer Sam Conroy.”
Good reviews.
2) EVERY LITTLE STEP- Premise by Netflix. “Go backstage for an up-close look at a Broadway production with this entertaining documentary that follows hopeful dancers as they audition for coveted spots in the 2006 revival of “A Chorus Line.” Drawing parallels between the interactions of the aspiring actors and the events of the play, filmmakers
Adam Del Deo and
James D. Stern also intercut interview footage of composer
Marvin Hamlisch and dancers from the original Broadway production.”
I saw this and liked it a lot.
3) ADORATION- Premise by Netflix. “Assigned to translate a terrorism-related news story for his French class, teen Simon (
Devon Bostick) weaves personal details into his tale, which soon leaves the Internet swirling with rumors that Simon’s dead father was an actual terrorist. Acclaimed auteur
Atom Egoyan‘s haunting and lyrical drama — cleverly structured as a mystery — also stars
Scott Speedman as Simon’s caretaker uncle and
Arsinée Khanjian as Simon’s persistent teacher.”
Good reviews.
4) THE PROPOSAL- Premise by Netflix. “When she learns that she’s in danger of losing her visa status and being deported back to her native Canada, overbearing book editor Margaret Tate (
Sandra Bullock) forces her put-upon assistant, Andrew Paxton (
Ryan Reynolds), to marry her. Directed by
Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses), this romantic comedy also stars
Craig T. Nelson and
Mary Steenburgen as Andrew’s parents, Joe and Grace, and
Betty White as the outspoken Grandma Annie.”
Weak reviews.

OPENING THIS WEEK-
1) DISENGAGEMENT- RottenTomatoes had this to say- “Ana is reunited with her estranged Israeli stepbrother, Uli, when he travels to France for the death of their father. She decides to return to Israel to search for the daughter she gave up at birth 20 years ago. Crossing frontiers by car, train and boat, Ana and Uli are caught up in the turmoil and emotion of the military-enforced disengagement of Israeli settlers from Gaza in 2005.” This stars Juliette Binoche and is directed by Amos Gitai. No reviews as yet.
2) FROM MEXICO WITH LOVE- RottenTomatoes said “Fight-coordinator-turned-film-director Jimmy Nickerson (RAGING BULL, ROCKY) helms this tale of a self-destructive amateur boxer seeking to follow in his father’s footsteps by making a name for himself in the ring. Hector Villa (Kuno Becker) may have the spirit of a winner, but his better judgment is consistently clouded by his anger.” No reviews as yet.
3) PETER AND VANDY- Premise by Zap2it. “Flashbacks and flash-forwards illustrate the rise and fall of a love affair between two New Yorkers.” No reviews yet.
4) AN EDUCATION- Premise by Zap2it.
5) COUPLES RETREAT- Premise by Zap2it. “Four couples, all friends, descend on a tropical island resort. Though one couple is there to work on their marriage, the others are there to just enjoy some fun in the sun. They soon find, however, that paradise comes at a price: participation in couples therapy sessions is mandatory. What started out as a cut-rate vacation turns into an examination of the common problems many couples face.” No reviews yet.

FLORIDA- At the Emerging Cinemas of Lake Worth-
1) SERAPHINE- Premise by RottenTomatoes- “Seraphine is a well-crafted French film that effectively captures one woman’s experience with art, religion, and mental illness, and features a brilliant performance from Yolande Moreau.” Great reviews.
2) SOUL POWER- Premise by Netflix- “In 1974, America’s R&B superstars traveled to Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) for a three-day concert. This documentary of the event, part of which became 1996’s When We Were Kings, is made up of footage unseen for more than 30 years.
James Brown,
Bill Withers,
B.B. King, the
Spinners,
Miriam Makeba and more perform beloved tunes, while cameras capture daily life in Kinshasa and the show’s preparation.”
Good reviews.
