2) PROJECT NIM– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Oscar-winning filmmaker James Marsh (Man on Wire) peers inside the landmark 1970s experiment for an unflinching look at Nim, the chimp whom scientists raised as human and taught sign language to prove that apes can communicate like humans. Firsthand accounts, previously unseen archival footage and powerful images tell of Nim‘s life in a human bubble. The result is a fascinating exposé on Nim‘s true nature — and a glimpse into our own.” Great reviews. TRDB.

Disgusted by overbearing bureaucracy and what he feels are unrealistic communal expectations, Sallah (Topol) butts heads with leaders and neighbors as he tries to acquire housing for his family. Gila Almagor and Arik Einstein also star.”

What starts out as a straightforward and cynical business arrangement turns into something very unexpected, the unlikely alliance between Socha and the Jews as the enterprise seeps deeper into Socha’s conscience. OPENING THIS WEEK-

1) THE FORGIVENESS OF BLOOD– Synopsis by RottenTomatoes. “The powerful and richly textured second feature from Joshua Marston focuses on an Albanian family caught up in a blood feud. Nik (Tristan Halilaj) is a carefree teenager in a small town with a crush on the school beauty and ambitions to start his own internet café. His world is suddenly up-ended when his father and uncle become entangled in a land dispute that leaves a fellow villager murdered. According to a centuries-old code of law, this entitles the dead man’s family to take the life of a male from Nik’s family as retribution. His uncle in jail and his father in hiding, Nik is the prime target and confined to the home while his younger sister Rudina (Sindi Laçej) is forced to leave school and take over their father’s business.” Good early reviews. TRDB.

FLORIDA- At the Stonzek Theater Lake Worth Playhouse-

1) PAUL GOODMAN CHANGED MY LIFE–  2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “This documentary explores the little-known life of best-selling author Paul Goodman, “the most influential man you’ve never heard of.” He may not be widely recognized by name, but his book Growing Up Absurd became the bible of the New Left.” Good reviews. TRDB.

2) THE MILL AND THE CROSS- 2011. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “What would it be like to step inside a great work of art, have it come alive around you, and even observe the artist as he sketches the very reality you are experiencing? Lech Majewski brings to life Pieter Bruegel’s masterpiece The Way to Calvary, the story of the crucifixion, setting it in 16th century Flanders under brutal Spanish occupation. Rutger Hauer plays the artist, Michael York his patron, and Charlotte Rampling the Virgin Mary. As epic events unfold, bawdy country living continues unabated: couples entwine, musicians play wind instruments, soldiers torment their enemies mercilessly, and children scurry about. Using sophisticated computer technology, the filmmaker creates a brilliantly complex and fascinating multi-layered dreamscape that melds iconic moments in art, history, and religion with the quotidian lives of ordinary people.” Reviews are pretty much OK. TRDB.

3) THUNDER SOUL– 2010. When Conrad “Prof” Johnson took the reins of the jazz band at Kashmere High School in the 1970s, he had a group that was mediocre at best. But before anyone knew it, the school had a funk powerhouse on its hands. The film picked up awards at both the L.A. Film Festival and South by Southwest.” A few fair reviews. 2/13/12- I could not get into this movie that jumped from place to place so quickly that I lost any interest in following the issue. Also I felt like I had seen this several times in the past. TRDB. Netflix.

3) FIREFLIES IN THE GARDEN– 2008. Synopsis by Netflix. “In the wake of an unexpected family tragedy, novelist Michael Taylor (Ryan Reynolds) is forced to confront his fractured relationship with his father (Willem Dafoe) while dealing with painful memories of his mother (Julia Roberts), a woman who moved mountains to protect him. Emily Watson, Hayden Panettiere, Ioan Gruffudd and Carrie-Anne Moss also star in this semiautobiographical tale of rage and redemption from writer-director Dennis Lee.”

10/14/11- A weak review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

2/13/12- Perhaps I’m a sucker for movies with intense family issues but I enjoyed this fairly well panned drama. TRDB. Netflix.

4) TALES FROM THE GOLDEN AGE– 2009. Synopsis by Netflix. “Everyday life in 1980s Romania under Ceausescu takes on an air of comic surrealism in this whimsical collection of shorts written by award-winning filmmaker Cristian Mungiu and helmed by several acclaimed Romanian directors. A lighthearted take on the urban myths that persisted throughout the late communist era, the comedy anthology recalls a time when laughing in the face of absurdity and oppression was the only way to survive.”

8/27/11- OK review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

2/13/12- A lengthy series of “legends” or stories that were supposed to be funny or ironic but which were neither for me and I turned it off. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

5) THUNDER SOUL– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Mark Landsman totes his cameras to a tight-knit North Houston community in this poignant documentary, which celebrates an inner-city high school band leader’s lasting influence on his now-grown students. TRDB.

2/14/12- An OK documentary about a man who served as a beacon to a group of students with very little else in their lives. TRDB. Netflix.

1) THE WAY– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “When his son dies while hiking the famed Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in the Pyrenees, Tom (Martin Sheen) flies to France to claim the remains. Looking for insights into his estranged child’s life, he decides to complete the 500-mile mountain trek to Spain. Tom soon joins up with other travelers and realizes they’re all searching for something. Emilio Estevez writes and directs this drama about self-discovery.” Very good professional reviews but so far only poor audience reaction. TRDB.9/18/11- An article (not a review) in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

10/7/11- Good review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

12/26/11- I liked this movie very much. Enjoyed the story and the acting. TRDB.

2) THE WHISTLEBLOWER– 2010. Premise by Netflix. “Sent to Bosnia to train cops in the aftermath of that country’s brutal civil war, American policewoman Kathryn Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz) uncovers evidence that U.N. peacekeepers are complicit in a flourishing sex-trafficking trade. But when she brings her allegations to light, she discovers that her foes are more powerful than the law. Based on a true story, this thriller from director Larysa Kondracki co-stars Monica Bellucci and David Strathairn.” Winner at 2011 Palm Springs Film Festival.

7/21/11. I saw the coming attractions recently and I plan to see it. TRDB.

9/1/11- I just could not get into the characters and felt that the film was overly dramatic at times. I was also surprised at how naive the lead character was. The NY Times called the screenplay choppy and fumbling and trying to deal with too many characters. This is an important topic and should have been a documentary. TRDB.

3) LONDON BOULEVARD– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell (In Bruges) stars in this gritty crime drama as Mitchell, a recently paroled ex-con whose attempt at straight life includes taking a job as a handyman for a reclusive young starlet (Keira Knightley). Based on author Ken Bruen’s critically acclaimed novel, this adaptation marks the directorial debut of Academy Award-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed).” Bad reviews. TRDB.

4) OCTOBER (OCTUBRE)– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “While trying to track down the missing prostitute who left her newborn at his doorstep, solitary loan shark Clemente (Bruno Odar) forms unexpected attachments to the baby — which might be his — and Sofia (Gabriela Velasquez), the single neighbor helping him care for the child. Written and directed by brothers Daniel and Diego Vega, this bittersweet Peruvian drama also stars Carlos Gasols, Maria Carbajal and Sheryl Sánchez Mesco.” No reviews as yet but did sound interesting and I plan to see it. TRDB.

5/16/11- As far as I’m concerned this movie was like a character study of a man with NO character. No emotion and little dialogue. Miss it!! TRDB.

  FEBRUARY 2, 2012

DEAR FRIENDS:   QUICK LOOK AT MY FAVORITES OF THE WEEK-

1) LOVE CRIME– Netflix Streaming

2) THE LOVING STORY– Theater

3) THE LAST LIONS– Netflix

4) HAPPY, HAPPY– Netflix   _________________________________________________________________________________________   MOVIES I SAW LAST WEEK AT THE THEATER-

1) THE LOVING STORY– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “This riveting documentary profiles Mildred and Richard Loving, who were arrested hours after their 1958 wedding for breaking Virginia’s laws against interracial marriage. In 1967, their case was heard before the Supreme Court and changed the nation.”

1/31/12- I saw this at a special showing with the director Nancy Biurski at the Jacob Burns Film Center. A great documentary with an impressive trove of archival footage. The movie was thought provoking and has analogies to life today in various parts of society both here and abroad. TRDB.

_________________________________________________________________________________________   MOVIES I SAW LAST WEEK AT HOME-

1) LOVE CRIME- 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “With a nod to the machinations of All About Eve and Dangerous Liaisons, French director Alain Corneau delivers a chilling tale of two ambitious women whose professional appetites grow dangerously personal. At first, things are fine between senior executive Christine (Kristin Scott Thomas) and her eager young assistant, Isabelle (Ludivine Sagnier). But when Christine abuses her position of power, Isabelle resorts to revenge — and insubordination.”

9/2/11- An OK review in today’s NY Times. Friends saw this and thought it was OK too. TRDB.

1/27/12- Very well done, clever and suspenseful. I liked it. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

2) INSIDE HANA’S SUITCASE– 2009. Synopsis by Netflix. “This fascinating documentary traces the quest of a group of Japanese schoolchildren and their teacher, Fumiko Ishioka, as they try to uncover the history of a suitcase donated to the Tokyo Holocaust Museum and inscribed with the name “Hanna Brady.” Discovering that 13-year-old Hanna was a Czechoslovakian Jew interred in a concentration camp, the group finds her brother, George, in Toronto, who shares his memories of Hanna.” Great reviews. TRDB.

1/30/12- I know that this film got rave reviews but I found it just OK. A moving story but I felt that there were way too many re-enacted scenes by actors. The movie is really about school children learning about the Holocaust and about hate in general. TRDB. Netflix.

3) THE LAST LIONS– 2011. Premise by Netflix. “Narrated by actor Jeremy Irons, this thrilling documentary follows an African lioness named Ma di Tau as she and her cubs flee a devastating fire, then struggle to live in new territory amidst dangerous predators and a lethal pride of rival lions. Besides being a harrowing tale of survival, this film from directors Dereck and Beverly Joubert illuminates the urgent plight of all Africa’s lions, whose population has reached dangerously low levels.” Very good reviews. TRDB.

1/31/12- Beautiful photography and an interesting story of the evolution of a pride of lions and one lioness and her cubs in particular. Well worth seeing. TRDB.

4) PUNCTURE– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Drug-addicted attorney Mike and his business partner Paul take on a case involving an emergency room nurse who has been pricked by an infected needle. Uncovering a web of corporate conspiracies, Mike and Paul quickly find themselves outmatched.” Mediocre reviews, both professional and by audiences. TRDB.

2/1/12- A poorly put together movie but the message is loud and clear and I did enjoy it. TRDB. Netflix.

5) HAPPY HAPPY– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Set in a remote Norwegian town, this black comedy centers on cheerful housewife Kaja (Agnes Kittlesen), who is contentedly wedded to her loveless high school sweetheart but lands in hot water when a risqué encounter with her urbane new neighbor, Sigve (Henrik Rafaelsen), goes too far. With a full-blown affair on her hands and Christmas just around the corner, Kaja falls back on blinding optimism to get her through the snowballing scandal.” Fairly good professional reviews and average audience ones. TRDB.

2/1/12- Well acted and I found this small movie very interesting. TRDB. Netflix.

Meanwhile, Adam’s Greenpeace volunteer ex-girlfriend arrives.” No reviews as yet. TRDB.

2) WINDFALL- 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Exposing the downside of wind turbines, director Laura Israel’s illuminating documentary underlines the harmful facets of harnessing wind power, including the constant noise and potential for financial opportunism. The film focuses on an impoverished rural community in upstate New York, where residents — enticed by economic incentives — leased their land for the erection of turbines but now wonder whether the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.” Mixed early reviews. TRDB.   _________________________________________________________________________________________   FLORIDA- At the Stonzek Theater Lake Worth Playhouse-

2) MOZART’S SISTER– 2011. Synopsis by RottenTomatoes. “A speculative account of Maria Anna “Nannerl” Mozart (Marie Feret), five years older than Wolfgang (David Moreau) and a musical prodigy in her own right. Originally the featured performer, she has given way to Wolfgang as the main attraction, as their strict but loving father Leopold (Marc Barbe) tours his talented offspring in front of the royal courts of pre-French revolution Europe. Approaching marriageable age and now forbidden to play the violin or compose, Nannerl chafes at the limitations imposed on her gender but a friendship with the son and daughter of Louis XV offers an alternative.”

6) THE DESCENDANTS– Danbury, Saw Mill Hawthorne, Garden Cinema Norwalk. 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “When his wife is killed in a Waikiki boating accident, distant father Matt King (George Clooney) begins an iffy journey to repair his fractured relationship with his two daughters. FILM REVIEWS #398

JANUARY 26, 2012
DEAR FRIENDS:

I’m back after 6 weeks away. My last Newsletter was sent on Jan. 5 from Florida. Since then I’ve seen some really wonderful movies at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. I watched movies there for 5 days and I will list them for you with a BRIEF description and opinion. Of the 8 films that I saw, I loved 6, one was OK and one I didn’t care for too much. As it turns out, of the 8 films I saw 3 were among the 5 nominated by the Academy for Best Foreign Film of 2011.
I will follow the progress of these films and let you know when they are coming either to theaters or to the rental market. While waiting on lines I also heard about other films that sound interesting and, of course, I’ll watch for them as well.

1) HOW BIG IS YOUR LOVE– From Algeria, this movie was really special and portrayed the love of 2 grandparents for their grandson. Terrific movie.
2) VOLCANO– About a family that was displaced after a volcano in Iceland in 1973. Excellent.
3) MONSIEUR LAZHAR– About a teacher from Algeria who takes a job as an elementary school teacher in Montreal after the current teacher dies tragically. Wonderful movie- Best Foreign Film Nominee.
4) FOOTNOTE– About a father son relationship in Israel. Both are researchers in Academia and when one is to be awarded a prestigious honor the conflict escalates. Great movie. Best Foreign Film Nominee.
5) BACK TO YOUR ARMS– Takes place in 1961 Berlin and is about the secretive Soviet society and the German Stasi. This was the only one that I didn’t care for.
6) A SEPARATION– This movie has already opened to rave reviews in NY. I just “liked it” but most of my friends who were with me liked it more. Best Foreign Film Nominee.
7) TERRAFERMA– About an Italian family living on an island off the coast of Italy. When father rescues a boatload of illegal immigrants he must decide how to handle this issue. I liked this very much.
8)DAVID- About a Muslim boy in NY who is mistaken for Jewish when he goes to a Yeshiva to return a book he has found. I really enjoyed this one.

OTHER MOVIES I’VE SEEN SINCE MY LAST NEWSLETTER-

THEATER-

1) GARBO: THE SPY– 2009. Synopsis by Netflix. “Using interviews, archival footage and clips from old movies, director Edmon Roch tells the fascinating tale of Juan Pujol, a Spaniard who, under the codename Garbo, worked as a double agent during World War II and helped the Allies win the war.”11/18/11- A very good review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

1/4/12- Just saw this in Florida and I liked it. TRDB.

NETFLIX-

1) THE GREEN– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Michael, an idealistic drama teacher, moves to Connecticut with his partner, Daniel, but their idyllic life is shattered when a troubled high school student accuses Michael of molestation and everyone, including Daniel, assumes that he’s guilty.” A few reviews and they are all very good. TRDB.

1/13/12- Incredibly stupid screenplay and I turned it off. TRDB. Netflix.

2) ANOTHER EARTH– 2010. Premise by Netflix. “Shortly after a strange, Earth-like planet is discovered, gifted astrophysics student Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling) accidentally slams her car into the vehicle of John Burroughs (William Mapother), killing his family. After some time, Rhoda and John begin an unlikely romance. But Rhoda starts to wonder what would happen if she could actually visit the new planet in director Mike Cahill’s romantic sci-fi drama.” At Sundance 2011. Sounds interesting and good reviews as well. TRDB.

1/15/12- A few interesting parts but basically fairly ridiculous. TRDB. Netflix.

3) EMPTY NEST– 2008. Synopsis by Netflix. “Writer-director Daniel Burman crafts this knowing look at the shifting dynamics of a marriage. The story centers on Leonardo (Oscar Martínez), a self-absorbed, middle-aged playwright, and his wife, Martha (Cecilia Roth). Their three children are grown and out of the house, leaving them to focus on their identities, both as individuals and a couple for the first time in years. Arturo Goetz and Eugenia Capizzano co-star.”

4) SPECIAL TREATMENT– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “High-class prostitute Alice (Isabelle Huppert) specializes in wealthy, eccentric clients and is in the throes of a midlife crisis when her services are engaged by prominent psychiatrist Xavier (Bouli Lanners), who’s estranged from his wife and suffering his own existential malaise. 1/22/12- Weak reviews for this drama starring Isabel Huppert but I found it entertaining. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

Synopsis by Netflix. “This raucous rom-com chronicles the relationship of two busy singles, Dylan (Justin Timberlake) and Jamie (Mila Kunis), who agree to include sex in their friendship — minus the emotions and commitment. But things get complicated when Dylan (inevitably?) falls for his gal pal. Patricia Clarkson co-stars as Jaime’s hip mom and Woody Harrelson plays Dylan’s practical confidante, who advises him to man up when he pursues the newly dating Jamie.” Actually got an OK review from NY Times on 7/22/11. TRDB.

1/24/12- Despite the good reviews and a few funny situations I thought the movie was ridiculous and I turned it off midway. TRDB. Netflix.

6) THE GUARD– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “When tightly wound FBI agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle) invades an Irish village in pursuit of international drug dealers, wisecracking local copper Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson) does his best to annoy the American and get on with his circumscribed life. But soon there’s a murder, and Boyle finds himself swept up in detective work way beyond his pay grade. John Michael McDonagh directs this action-filled comedy.” Very good reviews. TRDB.

1/23/12- I almost turned this movie off halfway but it did get better and I enjoyed the 2nd. half. TRDB. Netflix.

7) HELL AND BACK AGAIN– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this unvarnished documentary set on the Afghan front line, U.S. Marine Sgt. Nathan Harris is wounded by Taliban machine-gun fire, then returns to his North Carolina home to grapple with the stress of civilian life. Embedded with Harris’s company on the battlefield, filmmaker Danfung Dennis discovers that for the 25-year-old veteran, recovering from a bullet to the head is no tougher than regaining a foothold in an apathetic homeland.” At Sundance 2011. His newfound peace is shattered, however, when her violent husband is released from prison.” Very good reviews. TRDB.

9/16/11- Good review today in the Times but at one point they did say that the movie was saved from tedium by the supporting cast, whatever that means. TRDB.

9/22/11- A thriller and I agree with the comment above that the acting, particularly from Gosling, made the movie. Don’t go if you’re squeamish! TRDB.

3) JANIE JONES– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Deserted by her drug-addicted mom (Elisabeth Shue) — a former groupie — in the middle of a rock concert, 13-year-old Janie (Abigail Breslin) drastically alters the course of her life when she announces to the band’s temperamental singer (Alessandro Nivola) that she’s his daughter. Although they’ve never met before, father and daughter go on the road together, eventually bonding over music and more.” Good audience reaction but no professional reviews as yet. TRDB.

4) THUNDER SOUL– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Mark Landsman totes his cameras to a tight-knit North Houston community in this poignant documentary, which celebrates an inner-city high school band leader’s lasting influence on his now-grown students. TRDB.

5) RESURRECT DEAD– 2011. Premise by Netflix. “After he gets passed over for promotion, haute cuisine sous chef Samir (Aasif Mandvi) quits to pursue his dream of cooking in Paris, but an emergency forces him to take over his family’s shabby Indian restaurant in Queens. Taxi driver-turned-chef Akbar (Naseeruddin Shah) shares his passion for Indian food with Samir, whose romance with fellow chef Carrie (Jess Weixler) fuels his desire to prove himself and save the restaurant.” Fair review in NY Times 11/19/10. Good reviews in general. TRDB.

As they desperately cling to their image of the perfect family, they can’t ignore the devastating truth.” Average audience reviews and no professional reviews as yet. TRDB.

2) LULA, THE SON OF BRAZIL– 2009. Synopsis by Netflix. “Adapted from a biography by journalist Denise Paraná, this big-budget epic chronicles the formative years of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva — aka Lula — who overcame formidable obstacles to become the president of Brazil in 2003. Lula and his six young siblings live in poverty and are sent to work early; an accident on the job drives the adult Lula (Rui Ricardo Diaz) into union activism, planting the seeds for a future in politics.” Fair  reviews at best. The intimate social drama focuses on a quartet of individuals from different castes — a situation that would normally preclude them from forming friendships. Unique circumstances, however, draw them together.” Good early reviews but just a fair one in the NY Times on 1/21/11.

4/11- Bollywood without music and not bad at all. The first one I’ve watched through for a long time. TRDB.

1) PUTTY HILL– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “In a vacant house in Baltimore’s skid row, a young man named Cory dies of a heroin overdose. As his friends and family unite for his funeral, their reflections reveal as much about the condition of the city as their tragic loss. Filmed over just a few days and largely improvised, this moving drama by director Matthew Porterfield was an official selection of the 2010 South By Southwest Film Festival.” Very good professional reviews and average audience reaction. TRDB.11/23/11- Despite it’s creativity I just could not get into this drama and it’s characters including the deceased. TRDB. Netflix.

2) THESE AMAZING SHADOWS– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Fueled by exclusive interviews and dazzling archival footage, filmmakers Paul Mariano and Kurt Norton shine a light on the work of the National Film Registry and the art of preserving aesthetically, culturally and historically significant cinema. Highlights in this Sundance selection include input from the likes of Christopher Nolan, John Waters, Rob Reiner, Debbie Reynolds, Tim Roth and George Takei.” At Sundance 2011.

11/26/11- This documentary is a must-see for anybody seriously interested in movies and their influence on our culture. Quotes I loved are “movies are a window to the world” and “movies are a time capsule of our society.” Great Documentary. TRDB. Netflix.

3) ADRIFT- 2009. 4) THE DEVIL’S DOUBLE– 2011. With his family’s fate on the line, Yahia surrenders his identity to embody the hated figure but gains a conspirator in Uday’s concubine, Sarrab (Ludivine Sagnier), as he plots his escape.”

The movie is discussed in a NY Times article (not a review) on 7/24/11. TRDB.

5) THE WAVE– 2008.
