MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT HOME-

1) ALBERT NOBBS– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Having for decades disguised herself as a man while working as a butler in a posh 19th-century Dublin hotel, a woman calling herself AlbertNobbs reconsiders her charade when a handsome painter arrives on the scene.” Mediocre reviews. TRDB.5/19/12- Despite the “fair at best” reviews I found the movie compelling. TRDB. Netflix.

2) THE LITTLE GIRL (LA PIVELLINA)- 2009. Synopsis by Netflix. “Middle-aged circus performer Patti (Patrizia Gerardi) finds 2-year-old Asia (Asia Crippa) abandoned in a park on the outskirts of Rome. Patti and her German boyfriend, Walter (Walter Saabel), search for the child’s parents but can’t help falling in love with “la pivellina” (the little squirt). Italian documentarians Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel transition effortlessly into fiction with this warmly intimate gem.” Very good reviews. TRDB.

5/20/12- A real sleeper!! I enjoyed this movie that was really about everybody else as much as this adorable child. See it!! TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

3) FIRST POSITION– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “This fascinating documentary follows dancers training for the Youth America Grand Prix, one of the world’s most prestigious ballet competitions. The stakes are high: Their performances will determine the success or failure of the young girls’ dreams.”

Very few reviews and they are OK. TRDB.

5/4/12- A good review in today’s NY Times that brought up a bit of controversy in the making of this documentary. TRDB.

5/22/12- A well done and interesting documentary about what it takes to make it in this field and what it’s like to be a child competitor. The controversy with this movie was related to the fact that the competition organizers had a hand in the making of the movie. In particular they helped select the subjects to be followed and were involved in other aspects as well. TRDB. Comcast On-Demand.

4) RAMPART– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Dave Brown is a dirty cop with a mile-wide mean streak. As he roams the streets meting out “justice,” the LAPD sinks into a corruption scandal. The countdown to Brown’s judgment is on in this fact-based film co-written by crime novelist James Ellroy.” Fairly good reviews including a few very good ones. TRDB.

Rotten Tomatoes had this to say— “Los Angeles, 1999 – Officer Dave Brown (Harrelson) is a Vietnam vet and a Rampart Precinct cop, dedicated to doing “the people’s dirty work” and asserting his own code of justice, often blurring the lines between right and wrong to maintain his action-hero state of mind. When he gets caught on tape beating a suspect, he finds himself in a personal and emotional downward spiral as the consequences of his past sins and his refusal to change his ways in light of a department-wide corruption scandal seal his fate.

5/23/12- A very interesting drama about a “bad” cop with a terrific acting job by Woody Harrelson. Despite his  miserable character it was painful to watch him spiral downward.  TRDB. Netflix.

1) THEY CALL IT MYANMAR: LIFTING THE CURTAIN– Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Shot clandestinely over a 2-year period by best-selling novelist and filmmaker, Robert H. Lieberman, this film provides a rare look at the second-most isolated country on the planet. It lifts the curtain to expose the everyday life in a country that has been held in the iron grip of a brutal military regime for 48 years. This unique feature length documentary, culled from over 120 hours of striking images, is an impressionistic journey. Interviews and interactions with more than 100 people throughout Burma, including an interview with the recently released Aung San Suu Kyi, are interwoven with spectacular footage of this little seen nation and its people.
Good audience reviews so far. TRDB.

But his fear of the responsibility suddenly thrust upon him is one that he must face on his own.” Generally poor reviews. TRDB.4/6/12- Very good review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

4/15/12- Despite the fair to poor reviews I enjoyed this film about a man suffering with the awesome responsibility placed on him and his questions about being able to do the job. TRDB.

The first is the dramatic Entebbe hijack and rescue, 8 days when a nation held its breath and executed a military miracle that redefined the Jewish Nation’s call “Never Again!” The second is the remarkable life story of Jonathan Netanyahu, a young soldier who struggled to find the balance between the people and the Nation he loved. This film is about Jonathan’s life, and what led these two dramatic story arcs to intersect on that fateful day.”4/21/12- An excellent documentary that dealt with a complex man living in a complex time. 2) LOST BOHEMIA–  2011. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “For over 100 years, the most significant 20th century artists and performers have lived and worked in the 165 landmark Studios atop Carnegie Hall, including Marilyn Monroe, Isadora Duncan, Barnett Newman, Norman Mailer, Marlon Brando and George Balanchine. In 2001, the Carnegie Hall Corporation began to systematically evict the artists (some in residence for over forty years), destroy the Studios and convert the spaces into offices. Alarmed by the situation, photographer Josef Astor, a resident of the Carnegie Hall Studios for over twenty years, began to film his neighboring artists, the ballet school, drama classes, dancers, singing teachers, sculptors, painters and writers. Over a period of eight years, first-time director Astor filmed several hundred hours of the remaining artist tenants as they fought to preserve the Studios for future generations. LOST BOHEMIA is Astor’s intimate, affectionate portrait of these extraordinary people and chronicles the pleasures and struggles of working artists in New York City. LOST BOHEMIA is the only film documentation of the Carnegie Studios, the artists and the Studio’s significant history. Vintage film, photographs, television footage, materials from the artist’s private collections and music complete the documentary’s story.” Excellent reviews. TRDB.

MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT HOME-

1) THE CONQUEST– 2011. 2) LOUDER THAN A BOMB– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Capturing the combined creative spirit of more than 600 Chicago-area teenagers who are participating in what’s billed as the world’s largest youth poetry slam, this documentary highlights the joy of language and the power of collaboration.” Very good reviews. TRDB.

5/6/12- Despite the interesting individual stories of the kids and the obvious talent there I just could not get into this movie as it felt like numerous other documentaries that I have seen before. TRDB. Netflix.

3) CHASING MADOFF– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “This eye-opening documentary chronicles the decade-long and often frustrating campaign of reporter Harry Markopolos to bring regulators’ attention to the titanic and brazen investment scams engineered by now-convicted financial felon Bernie Madoff.” Poor reviews. TRDB.

5/7/12- Primarily about Markopolos, this documentary uses some gimmicks and some undocumented threats to liven it up. So-so! TRDB. Netflix.

TRDB.12/2/11- Just a weakly positive review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.
 2) MY PERESTROIKA– 2010. Premise by Netflix. “An intimate look at five longtime friends who grew up shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union, this documentary sheds light on how Russians have adapted to post-Soviet society and their nation’s continually shifting political landscape. Interweaving decades-old home movie footage with captivating tales of contemporary life, director Robin Hessman’s enlightening movie illustrates the stark contrast between Moscow then and now.” Very good reviews and this one sounds interesting. TRDB.

3) ALBERT NOBBS– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Having for decades disguised herself as a man while working as a butler in a posh 19th-century Dublin hotel, a woman calling herself Albert Nobbs reconsiders her charade when a handsome painter arrives on the scene.” Mediocre reviews. TRDB.

4) KINYARWANDA– 2011. Premise by Netflix. “In this first-ever dramatic feature produced by Rwandans, the events of the horrific 1994 genocide are personalized through six intertwined stories. As the violence rages, mosques become a haven for Rwandans of all affiliations seeking protection. Director and writer Alrick Brown seeks the gray areas in this dark period of history, finding all-too-human motivations and resilience in the face of unimaginable catastrophe.” At Sundance 2011. Excellent reviews. TRDB.

5) RAMPART– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Dave Brown is a dirty cop with a mile-wide mean streak. As he roams the streets meting out “justice,” the LAPD sinks into a corruption scandal. 6) WINDFALL– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “Exposing the downside of wind turbines, director Laura Israel’s illuminating documentary underlines the harmful facets of harnessing wind power, including the constant noise and potential for financial opportunism. TRDB.

7) WE WERE HERE– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “The AIDS crisis forever changed gay culture in San Francisco, as examined in this absorbing documentary from David Weissman, who explores the disease’s impact on five individuals. Vintage film clips accompany their sobering stories. Co-director of The Cockettes, Weissman contrasts the 1960s and ’70s-era joy and revelry depicted in that film with the sorrow, outrage and activism that followed in the 1980s and beyond.”9/9/11- Great reviews in general and in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

8)NORWEGIAN WOOD– 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “Set in 1969 Tokyo, this melancholic tale centers on serious young college freshman Toru Watanabe (Ken’ichi Matsuyama), whose developing relationship with childhood friend Naoko (Rinko Kikuchi) drags into the present a terrible event both would rather bury. While Naoko begins to withdraw, Toru awakens to the political and cultural tumult around him, and when he meets the intriguing Midori (Kiko Mizuhara), Toru must confront his own uncertain heart.” Very good reviews. 12/9/11- Luke warm review in today’s NY Times and elsewhere. TRDB.

10) MICHAEL– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Michael seems like an ordinary — even boring — middle-aged guy. But after work, he returns home and unlocks the basement cell where he keeps 10-year-old Wolfgang. This harrowing drama chronicles five months of Wolfgang’s captivity.” Very good reviews. TRDB.

11) CHARLOTTE RAMPLING: THE LOOK– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix.  “Actress Charlotte Rampling largely tells her own story in this unconventional self-portrait conceived by filmmaker Angelina Maccarone. Highlights include conversations between Rampling and her friends, along with clips from her most famous films.”

11/4/11- Described by the NY Times today as just OK and often a tease. TRDB.

1) THE CUP– 2012. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “A true story about two brothers, both competing for the highest honor in horse racing, the Melbourne Cup. When tragedy strikes, one brother relies on the support of a veteran horse trainer to overcome the odds and challenge himself to win. An incredible story of inspiration and triumph over adversity.”Bad reviews all over. TRDB.

2) HICK– 2012. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Small town teenager Luli (Chloe Grace Moretz) escapes to Las Vegas, leaving behind her alcoholic and abusive parents. Armed with her smarts, a pistol and pocket money, she hitchhikes her way west. Along the way, Luli crosses paths with Eddie (Eddie Redmayne), an unstable rebel with questionable motives and Glenda (Blake Lively), a cocaine-snorting drifter on the run. Adapted from the critically acclaimed novel by Andrea Portes, this powerful story pulls you into a provocative world of drugs, seduction and murder.”

Several good audience reviews but none professional so far. TRDB.

3) WHERE DO WE GO NOW?- 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “While their men fight a remote sectarian war, the women of a Lebanese village — one hemmed in by minefields — band together to denounce the clash of Islamic and Christian beliefs that sustains the war and threatens to poison their own community.”

OK reviews. TRDB.

2) FREE MEN– 2011. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “In German-occupied Paris, a young unemployed Algerian named Younes (played by break-out star, Tahar Rahim) earns his living as a black marketeer. Arrested by the French police but given a chance to avoid jail, Younes agrees to spy on the Paris Mosque. The police suspect the Mosque authorities, including its rector Ben Ghabrit, of aiding Muslim Resistance agents and helping North African Jews by giving them false certificates. At the Mosque, Younes meets the Algerian singer Salim Halali, and is moved by Salim’s beautiful voice and strong personality. When Younes discovers that Salim is Jewish, he stops collaborating with the police and gradually transforms from a politically ignorant immigrant into a fully-fledged freedom fighter.”

3) BULLY– 2011. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch, The Bully Project is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. At its heart are those with huge stakes in this issue whose stories each represent a different facet of America’s bullying crisis. The Bully Project follows five kids and families over the course of a school year. Stories include two families who have lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her 14-year-old daughter who has been incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus. With an intimate glimpse into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principals’ offices, the film offers insight into the often cruel world of the lives of bullied children.” Very good early reviews. TRDB.3/31/12- Very good review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

4/17/12- A very powerful documentary that should be required viewing for all parents. TRDB.

4) STANDING SILENT– 2010. Synopsis from the Jacob Burns Film Center web site. “Sexual abuse in the Catholic Church has been in the news for years, but it’s taken longer for similar revelations to emerge from the Orthodox Jewish world. Journalist Phil Jacobs was one of the first to take it on. Bravely focusing on his own community in Baltimore, he encountered denial, hostility, and—most painfully—ostracism along the way. His very personal story is the subject of this powerful, important documentary.”

Very few reviews but they’re all good. TRDB.

4/18/12- Seen as part of the Westchester Jewish Film Festival and I liked it very much. TRDB.

He hides them for money in the labyrinth of the town’s sewers beneath the bustling activity of the city above. What starts out as a straightforward and cynical business arrangement turns into something very unexpected, the unlikely alliance between Socha and the Jews as the enterprise seeps deeper into Socha’s conscience. The film is also an extraordinary story of survival as these men, women and children all try to outwit certain death during 14 months of ever increasing and intense danger.”

MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT HOME-

1) THE MAID– 2009. By Sebastian Silva and starring Catalina Saavedra. About a 41yr. old woman who has been a live-in maid for a well-to-do Chilean family for 20yrs. Either depressed or psycho she pouts through most of the movie and has a hostile dependent relationship with each member of the family. It’s only when an assistant hired to help her takes a liking to her and shows her that there’s more to life than taking care of someone else’s family that she begins to smile and take an interest in life. I liked the movie very much and agree with the reviewer who said that this movie was “an intelligent microcosm of Latin social hierarchy.” TRDB.

2) IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Actress Angelina Jolie makes her directorial debut with a tale of marriage set against the violence of the Bosnian War. Ajla and her husband struggle with to keep their relationship alive, a battle that distracts them from the nation’s upheaval.”

12/23/11- OK review in today’s NY Times but poor reviews over all. TRDB.

4/5/12- I just could not get into this movie. TRDB. Netflix.

3) JESS + MOSS– 2012. Synopsis by Netflix. “Teenage second cousins Jess (Sarah Hagan) and Moss (Austin Vickers) spend their last summer together in the farmlands of Kentucky. As the rhythm of the season exerts its gentle pull, the two explore the beauty of their natural environment and the emotional undercurrents of their unique relationship. Director Clay Jeter purposely used expired or aged film stock to evoke the poignancy of his characters’ fading world.”

2/17/12- Weak review in today’s NY Times but I did see a couple of good ones as well. TRDB.

4/6/12- Yet another “youth in summer” movie, this one as plain as can be and fairly strange as well as they are the only characters. No adults, no supervision, no nothing. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

4) GIULIA DOESN’T DATE AT NIGHT– 2009. Synopsis by Netflix. “Italian director Giuseppe Piccioni weaves a tender story about the unlikely romance that develops between Guido (Valerio Mastandrea), a young writer, and Giulia (Valeria Golino), a woman who’s teaching his daughter how to swim in this affecting drama. Guido soon starts taking swimming lessons himself, but when he finally asks Giulia for a date, he learns that she can’t go out at night because she’s out on a day pass from prison.”

4/6/12- Interesting story, characters and acting make this movie worthwhile. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

5) MY JOY– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “When a wrong turn takes truck driver Georgy (Viktor Nemets) into unfamiliar Russian countryside, he’s drawn into the mix of strange locals, including corrupt cops, a war veteran, a prostitute and a mysterious Gypsy woman — all of whom may lead him to a dead end. Russian documentary filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa directs this drama, a Cannes festival entry that co-stars Olga Shuvalova and Vlad Ivanov.”

9/30/11- Good review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

4/9/12- Incredibly boring with little if any thread holding the mess together. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

6) ROADIE– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this taut drama, middle-aged Jimmy Testagross loses his gig as roadie for a has-been rock band and moves back in with his ailing mother. With no job or skills, Jimmy must find a way to let go of his overextended adolescence and become his own man.” Very good reviews. TRDB.

1/6/12- Review is fair at best in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

4/9/12- A good story and I liked it. TRDB. Netflix.

7) SLEEPING BEAUTY– 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this dark tale, college gal Lucy takes a decidedly offbeat job: As a “sleeping beauty,” she’s paid to be fondled or otherwise handled by strangers while in a sedated sleep. Soon, however, she begins to wonder just what she’s submitting to.”

9/18/11- An article (not review) in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

11/18/11- Mixed reviews with some OK ones and some terrible ones as well. TRDB.

12/2/11- Good review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

4/10/12- A very unusual premise but a disappointing movie. TRDB. Netflix.

8)LITTLEROCK– 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “This evocative drama examines culture shock, the universal yearning for connection, and the impact of history on ordinary people in the tale of Atsuko (Atsuko Okatsuka) and Rintaro (Rintaro Sawamoto), Japanese siblings who come to California to visit a World War II internment camp. After getting stranded in a desert town, Atsuko finds a connection with a local boy (Cory Zacharia), while Rintaro longs for home.” Some very interesting early reviews. TRDB.

REPEATS-

1)  FOOTNOTE– Jacob Burns, Bethel, Clearview 100, Garden Cinema Norwalk. 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “Long-buried tensions erupt in this witty drama, which follows the strained relationship between a reserved Talmudic scholar and his ambitious son — both professors at the same university — when the father wins a prestigious award the son covets.”I saw this at the Palm Springs Film Festival 2012 and loved it. It was one of the 5 nominees for Best Foreign Film. TRDB.

3/9/12- Fairly good review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

3/17/12- Take it for what it’s worth. Somewhat light and fluffy with each character basically a caricature but all in all a fun movie with some good comedy as well. TRDB.

 5) THE KID WITH A BIKE– Clearview 100. 2011. TRDB.3/16/12- Great review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

4/2/12- The actor who played the kid was great and the story was a heartening act of love. There were also a few terrific scenes like the scene in a car when the boy is very upset. A better understanding of the woman’s motivation would have helped me but the movie was excellent never-the-less. TRDB.

Her secret is safe until a female colleague develops feelings for her. Stars Altinay Ghelich Taghani and Soghra Karimi.” No reviews. TRDB.

But he’s the one that will take all of them out of the projects because he’s been signed by the indie music label, Warlock Records. Synopsis by Netflix. “When an elite SWAT team goes after a drug lord holed up in Jakarta’s most notorious tenement building, they find themselves trapped and forced to fight their way out through brutal gangsters loyal to the kingpin they were trying to assassinate.” Very good reviews but this movie sounds violent as hell and I think I’ll skip it. TRDB.3/16/12- Great review in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

4/2/12- The actor who played the kid was great and the story was a heartening act of love. There were also a few terrific scenes like the scene in a car when the boy is very upset. Some of the editing could be improved but the movie was excellent never-the-less. TRDB.

2) FOOTNOTE– Jacob Burns, Bethel, Clearview 100, Garden Cinema Norwalk. 2011. 3) IN DARKNESS– Clearview 100, Garden Cinema Norwalk. 2011. Synopsis by RottenTomatoes. “From acclaimed director Agnieszka Holland, In Darkness is based on a true story.
