MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT THE THEATER-
1) LET’S GO– 2015. Synopsis by The Hollywood Reporter- “German filmmaker Michael Verhoeven has long revealed a preoccupation with his country’s past in such acclaimed films as The White Rose and The Nasty Girl. The trend continues with his adaptation of Laura Waco‘s autobiographical novel about her upbringing at the hands of her concentration camp survivor parents who made the decision to remain in Germany after the war. An insightful examination of German-Jewish identity, Let’s Go! is also a probing family drama that well merits international arthouse exposure. Originally produced for German television, the film was recently showcased at the New York Jewish Film Festival.4/28/15- I enjoyed this movie very much and highly recommend it if you are able to find it. Seen as part of the Westchester Jewish Film Festival. TRDB.2) THE DOVE FLYER– 2015. Synopsis taken from JBFC website. “Kabi is a young man coming of age in the brutal and chaotic Baghdad of the 1950s. Under pressure by local authorities, he and his family must make the gut-wrenching decision to stay in their homeland or to flee to the newly created state of Israel. Based on a novel, this is a beautifully rendered, rare look at the tumultuous postwar period and its violent dismantling of Jewish communities in the Middle East.”

4/29/15- Another very heavy movie from the Westchester Jewish Film Festival 2015, this was a history lesson as well as a drama about a community and a family. A bit confusing for me (and for the people I attended with) but we all enjoyed the movie very much. The movie was originally called “Farewell Baghdad.” TRDB.

2) TRACKS– 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “Mia Wasikowska is affecting as adventurer Robyn Davidson, who crossed the Australian desert alone — and on foot — in 1977. Drawn from Davidson’s memoir, this drama depicts her arduous journey and explores her reasons for undertaking it.”

8/18/14- Very good reviews. TRDB.

4/23/15- It’s not easy to make a drama about walking across the desert alone interesting but this drama does just that. Definitely recommended. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

Loath to concede defeat, Kolya secures an attorney, and a battle of wills ensues.”

12/25/14- Great reviews. TRDB.

2) WILD TALES– Jacob Burns. 2015. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Inequality, injustice and the demands of the world we live in cause stress and depression for many people. Some of them, however, explode. This is a movie about those people. Vulnerable in the face of a reality that shifts and suddenly turns unpredictable, the characters of Wild Tales cross the thin line that divides civilization and barbarism. TRDB.

2/16/15- An article in yesterday’s NY Times about this movie sounds very interesting. The film just won a Golden Bear in Berlin. TRDB.

2/26/15- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

REPEATS-

1) TIMBUKTU– Clearview 100.  2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this piercing tale of oppression set in 2012 A, fear grips Timbuktu after the Malian city is seized by Islamic rebels determined to impose their extreme beliefs on the moderate Muslim populace.”

1/30/15- Excellent reviews from critics and very good ones from audiences. TRDB.

2/9/15- A fascinating drama that really gave the viewer a picture of what it’s like living or trying to live under these circumstances. TRDB.

2) STILL ALICE– Movies of Lake Worth, Jacob Burns, Bethel, Saw Mill Hawthorne, Danbury, Clearview 100, Garden Cinema Norwalk. 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “When 50-year-old linguistics professor Alice Howland begins having trouble remembering words, her symptoms ultimately lead to a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s — which forces Alice and her family to make radical changes in their lives.”12/5/14- Mostly very good reviews but a few really did not like it at all calling it a TV type movie. TRDB.

3) IMITATION GAME– Bethel, Saw Mill Hawthorne, Garden Cinema Norwalk. Synopsis by Netflix. “Chronicling mathematical wizard Alan Turing’s key role in Britain’s successful effort to crack Germany’s Enigma code during World War II, this historical biopic also recounts how his groundbreaking work helped launch the computer age.”11/29/14- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

12/31/14- This movie was very well done with excellent acting and a basically true story. I enjoyed it very much but why did they need to sprinkle the schmaltz late in the movie- it was doing fine without? TRDB.

4) AMERICAN SNIPER– 2014. Bethel, Saw Mill Hawthorne, Danbury. 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “Based on his memoir of the same name, this military biopic centers on legendary sniper Chris Kyle, who amassed a record number of kills on the battlefield during his 10-year career as a Navy SEAL.”

12/25/14- Fairly good reviews from critics and audiences. TRDB.

1/26/15- I enjoyed the movie, especially the very realistic war scenes but I thought it was about a half hour too long and the hackneyed theme of men returning from war damaged both physically and emotionally a bit too familiar. TRDB.

5) TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT– Bethel, Clearview 100. 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “On the verge of losing her job, Sandra comes up with a last-ditch strategy: get her workmates to give up their bonuses so that she can stay on. With a single weekend to make it work, Sandra and her husband take her crusade for sympathy all over town.”12/24/14- Excellent reviews for this drama starring Marion Cotillard. TRDB.

6) BIRDMAN- Bethel, Saw Mill Hawthorne. 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “Michael Keaton delivers a winking performance in this dark comedy about a cinematic superhero trying to forge a comeback with a Broadway play. With none of the super-powers of his former character, the actor struggles to rebuild his career and life.”10/17/14- Excellent reviews from nearly all critics and audiences have liked it as well. The NY Times loved it. TRDB.

10/31/14- Very original and interesting mixing fact and fantasy. Keaton was excellent and I did like the movie. Labeled a comedy, it surely isn’t, and I don’t think it was worth an Academy Award. TRDB.

7) WHIPLASH– Movies of Lake Worth, Bethel, Saw Mill Hawthorne, Garden Cinema Norwalk. 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “Driven by his demanding music teacher, drummer Andrew is determined to succeed as a jazz musician — even if it destroys his personality. Under the shadow of his father’s failed artistic attempts, Andrew practices until his hands bleed.”An excellent drama with a bit of schmaltz at the end. TRDB.

8) MR. TURNER- Bethel, Garden Cinema Norwalk. 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “This incandescent biographical portrait of famed 19th-century painter J.M.W. Turner spotlights his artistic genius, along with the eccentric and frequently insensitive behavior that he exhibited in his private life.”12/19/14 Excellent reviews by critics and just OK ones from audiences. TRDB.

Synopsis by Netflix. “With his body progressively ravaged by ALS, world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking must rely on his wife, Jane, to continue his life’s work as he faces various challenges. This affecting biographical drama centers on the couple’s fertile partnership.”

11/7/14- Good reviews from critics and audiences alike. TRDB.

2/23/15- A great performance by Eddie Redmayne helped this drama immensely. I think that the movie couldn’t decide if it should stress the character or his theories and may have gotten a bit lost trying. I did, however, like the movie. TRDB.
