MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT THE THEATER-

1) INFINITELY POLAR BEAR– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “When his wife heads to New York for an 18-month job, bipolar Harvard dropout Cameron is left to care for their two daughters. Struggling with his illness, Cameron brings his innate creativity — and love of his children — to the challenge.”6/19/15- Very good reviews from audiences and critics alike. TRDB.

7/6/15- Even though this theme has been seen on the screen many times before, this movie, with great acting and a touching and honest story was very enjoyable. TRDB.

MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT HOME-

1) BALLET 422- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Offering a backstage look at the creation and realization of a ballet by choreographer Justin Peck, this fascinating documentary chronicles the intense artistic effort behind the production, the 422nd new work staged by the New York City Ballet.”2/6/15- Very good critical review and excellent audience reviews as well. TRDB.

7/2/15- I enjoyed this documentary very much as it portrayed the various aspects of creating a brand new ballet and brought them together quite well. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

2) CAMILLE CLAUDEL1915- 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “When gifted sculptress Camille Claudel, once the lover of Auguste Rodin, falls prey to mental illness, her family commits her to a psychiatric clinic. This subdued drama follows Camille’s thoughts and moods as she waits for redemption to arrive.”

10/16/13- Mixed reviews. The review in today’s NY Times was favorable. TRDB.

7/4/15- Unbelievably boring and I finally turned it off. Juliette Binoche is very good as usual– but not enough. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

3) CHAMPS– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Despite being born into poverty, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Bernard Hopkins beat the odds to become boxing superstars. This insightful documentary chronicles their rise to fame and difficulties coping with life outside the ring.”

3/13/15- Just OK reviews by the critics but audiences have liked it very much. The NY Times did not.  TRDB.

7/7/15– I enjoyed this documentary as I found it very honest, informative and at least a bit hopeful that the sport might become a bit safer and less exploitive of the fighters. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

4) WOMAN IN GOLD– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Six decades after World War II, Jewish octogenarian Maria Altmann begins a quest to reclaim the artwork confiscated from her family by the Nazis — including a famed Gustav Klimt masterpiece.”

4/1/15- Poor reviews!! Everyone I know who has seen this has loved it!! TRDB.

7/8/15- Before seeing this movie I felt that a dramatization of this case, rather than a documentary such as “The Rape of Europa” would be difficult to accomplish and would trivialize the topic but I liked this movie very much. TRDB. Netflix.

5) 2 DAYS IN NEW YORK– 2012. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “Marion and Mingus live cozily-perhaps too cozily-with their cat and two young children from previous relationships. However, when Marion’s jolly father (played by director Delpy’s real-life dad), her oversexed sister, and her sister’s outrageous boyfriend unceremoniously descend upon them for a visit, it initiates two unforgettable days that will test Marion and Mingus’s relationship. With their unwitting racism and sexual frankness, the French triumvirate hilariously has no boundaries or filters…and no person is left unscathed in its wake.”

Mixed reviews, both audience and professional. TRDB.

8/10/12- The NY Times called this movie “a likable mess” in today’s review.

7/8/15- The NY Times put it well and I agree. Families–lots of fun- lots of aggravation. Also, I love Julie Delpy. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

COMING TO NETFLIX NEXT TUESDAY, JULY 14-

1) CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Twenty years after her breakthrough role as a young woman who beguiles and ultimately destroys her mentor, Maria Enders is invited — in an ironic twist — to play the part of the older woman in a stage production of the same drama.”4/10/15- Excellent reviews from critics and good ones from audiences. TRDB.

4/20/15- Juliette Binoche was wonderful. That, together with an interesting story made for an enjoyable viewing.

2) 24 DAYS– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “In 2006, the shocking abduction and torture of young Jewish man Ilan Halimi in Paris set emotions aflame on the issue of anti-Semitism and the alleged inability of police investigators to comprehend the true motivations behind Ilan’s abduction.”4/24/15- OK reviews by critics but audiences have not liked this movie at all. TRDB.

3) THE SALT OF THE EARTH– 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “As this artfully crafted documentary proves, legendary Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado has created a spectacular body of work during his long career, capturing both the planet’s stunning beauty and humankind’s heartbreaking atrocities.”

12/12/14- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

5/4/15- A wonderful documentary. I felt like I was in a photographic museum with the photographer speaking in the ear phones. TRDB.

Not Recommended-

1) FREEDOM- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Pursued by a relentless tracker, Samuel Woodward and his family escape servitude on a Virginia plantation through a network of safe houses, an underground organization of ordinary citizens who smuggle runaway slaves to freedom.”6/5/15- Every review I read by professionals said that this movie was awful and failed to represent this aspect of our history. TRDB.

1) AMY– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Though singer Amy Winehouse released only two albums during her brief and stormy career, she left an indelible mark on pop music. This affecting documentary recounts her meteoric rise to fame and the addictions that ended her life at age 27.”7/3/15- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

2) CARTEL LAND– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “With the law failing to protect citizens from the drug cartels wreaking havoc in Mexico, vigilante groups have sprung up on both sides of the border. This potent documentary tracks two such groups, one in Mexico’s Michoacán state and one in Arizona.”

7/3/15- Excellent reviews by the critics and fairly good ones by audiences. TRDB.

3) JIMMY’S HALL- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “After being deported from Ireland to the United States, political firebrand Jimmy Gralton returns to his hometown a decade later and reopens the dance hall he once ran as a gathering place for youngsters — much to the dismay of community leaders.”

7/3/15- Fairly good reviews by the professionals and just OK ones from audiences. TRDB.

4) STRAY DOG– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Behind his bearded biker visage, Vietnam War veteran Ron Hall is still healing from psychological scars brought about by his service. This empathetic documentary follows Hall’s journey to the Vietnam Memorial to pay tribute to his fallen comrades.”

5) ZARAFA– 2015. Synopsis by IMDB. “The plot of the film has a grandfather telling his grand kids the story of Maki, a young boy who escapes from slave traders, befriends a giraffe (the title character), cross the desert, meet a pirate, and a few other things on a trip that takes him from Africa to Paris.”

NOT RECOMMENDED-

1) CLOSER TO GOD– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “After genetic scientist Victor Reed succeeds in cloning the first human, he tries to control the news of his breakthrough. But when the press finds out, a maelstrom of controversy, legal complications and previous failures threatens to engulf him.”

7/3/15– Weak reviews by the critics and even weaker ones by audiences. Most of the critics did give some positive comments as well. TRDB.

2) JACKIE & RYAN– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Happy to hop trains and entertain on street corners, musician Ryan Brenner rarely lights anywhere for long … until he meets erstwhile recording star Jackie Laurel in Ogden, Utah — a chance encounter that changes both their lives.”

6/9/15- I liked this movie very much. The acting and, of course, the music were great. TRDB.

This startling documentary captures their offspring’s unique views of society — molded largely by films they’ve watched.”6/12/15- Very good reviews. TRDB.

6/19/15- This documentary proves once again that the truth is stranger than fiction. Nobody could make this up. The film was very different, creative and disturbing but definitely worth seeing. TRDB.

2) THE OVERNIGHT– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Transplants from Seattle, Alex and Emily feel like fish out of water in Los Angeles until a meeting at a park leads to a play date for their son and a dinner date for them. But they soon discover that their hosts have more in mind than friendship.”6/15/15- Fairly good reviews for this comedy. TRDB.

In “What Happened, Miss Simone?” Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Liz Garbus creates an unforgettable portrait of this iconic, controversial artist.”6/24/15- Fairly good reviews from both critics and audiences. TRDB.

6/30/15- An excellent documentary about a special person. The music was great as well. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

2) IN HARMS WAY– 1965. Synopsis by Netflix. “This World War II epic focuses on the effect the Pearl Harbor attack had on military lives. After a failed counterstrike on the Japanese, Capt. Torrey gets shore duty, finds love with a nurse, reconciles with his son and is finally sent back to sea.”

7/1/15– Starring John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Patricia Neal plus many others. I’ve seen this a few times before and never thought it was worth nearly 3 hours of my time. I still don’t. TRDB. Netflix.

 1) 5 FLIGHTS UP– 2015.  Synopsis by Netflix. “Married for four decades, New Yorkers Ruth and Alex have had a wonderful life together — most of it spent in their cherished Brooklyn walk-up. But now that it’s time to sell, the universe seems determined to thwart them.”5/5/15- Reviews were more negative than positive but I did read a more extensive review and I will recommend the movie. TRDB.

5/18/15- A delightful drama/comedy starring Morgan Freeman, Diane Keaton and Cynthia Nixon, all of whom play very well with each other. TRDB.

3) ALEX OF VENICE–  2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Devastated by her husband’s abrupt departure, hard-driving attorney Alex must try to pick up the pieces of her life as best she can. With an important case looming and a son and father to look out for, Alex is forced to reappraise her priorities.”4/17/15- Very good reviews. TRDB.

4/17/15- An enjoyable light drama with fun characters and good acting The sum of the scenes was even better than the entire movie. TRDB.

4) DELI MAN– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Arriving in the United States with 19th-century Jewish immigrants, deli cuisine quickly found its way into the nation’s mainstream appetite. This affectionate documentary celebrates Jewish delicatessens and their place in American history.”3/6/15- Good reviews for this documentary. TRDB.

5) ECHOES OF WAR– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Upon returning to his Texas home after the Civil War, ex-soldier Wade Riley becomes entangled in the battle between his family of animal trappers and Randolph McCluskey, a cattle rancher whose men have been stealing animals from the Rileys’ traps.”5/15/15- Poor reviews by critics but audiences have liked it very much. I’ll give it a try. TRDB.

6) HUMAN CAPITAL– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “After a tragic roadway accident, the fates of two families become intertwined as a result of the relationship between two of their children. Love, ambition and class all play a part in this piercing look at social climbers and the überwealthy.”1/14/15- Very good reviews from critics and audiences. The NY Times did not like it. TRDB. 

7) MERCHANTS OF DOUBT– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “This revealing documentary examines the network of scientific “experts” paid by major corporations to spread disinformation about looming environmental threats, including chemical pollution and global climate change.”

3/6/15- Very good reviews. TRDB.

8) COOPER AND HEMINGWAY: THE TRUE GEN– 2013. Synopsis by Netflix. “Celebrating the friendship between renowned actor Gary Cooper and legendary writer Ernest Hemingway, this absorbing documentary traces their sometimes contentious bond that lasted until their deaths a few weeks apart in 1961.”

10/11/13- Very few reviews but the NY Times liked it. TRDB.

9) ZERO MOTIVATION– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Serving out their required term in the military, a collection of young Israeli soldiers are posted to a desolate base in the middle of the desert. As their collective boredom mounts, personal frictions begin to surface among the all-female company.”

An Israeli military comedy that reminded me of MASH with the absurdity of war as a backdrop. I enjoyed it. TRDB.

Not Recommended–

1) ’71- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “When a young British soldier is separated from his unit in Belfast at the height of Northern Ireland’s Troubles, he must survive the night alone in a city that’s swarming with would-be enemies.”2/27/15- Excellent reviews from nearly everybody. TRDB

3/20/15- Excellent reviews but NOT from me. One reviewer said-  “If you are in the mood for a confusing and thoroughly depressing immersion into Irish history, you can’t do better.” I AGREE!! TRDB.

2) SLOW WEST- 2015. “A 16-year-old boy (Smit-McPhee) heads west on a journey across 19th Century frontier America in search of the woman he loves. He encounters a mysterious traveler named Silas (Fassbender) who protects him from the savage elements and outlaws in a lawless land, but is Silas really watching out for him¿or tied to the band of thieves tracking their every step?”5/15/15- Very good reviews. TRDB.

5/23/15- Slow, slow like the title only slower. A meandering western that could have been much better in my book. TRDB.

3) GERONTOPHILIA- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “After 18-year-old Lake realizes that he’s attracted to much older men, he starts working at a senior citizens home, where he begins a tender romance with a former actor. But the lovers must hit the road when their affair causes consternation.”5/1/15- Generally poor reviews but a few critics thought it was excellent. The NY Times did not like it. I might give this one a try. TRDB.

1) FRESH DRESSED– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Just as hip-hop music transformed the entertainment world, the genre has left its mark on the fashion industry. This stylish documentary takes a look at a generation of designers who turned youth culture into a billion-dollar business.”

6/26/15- Excellent reviews for this documentary. TRDB.

2) RUNOFF– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “With her husband’s health and business failing, Betty Freeman is forced to take on a host of burdens — including preventing foreclosure of the family’s rural Kentucky home. Before long, she learns that desperate times require desperate measures.”

6/26/15- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

3) BATKID BEGINS– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “On November 15, 2013, young leukemia patient Miles Scott got his wish to become Batman when San Francisco transformed itself into Gotham City to become Miles’s playground — a singular act of charity that became an Internet sensation.”

6/26/15- Excellent reviews for this documentary. TRDB.

4) A BOROWED IDENTITY– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Brought up in Israel, a bright young Arab admitted to a top-tier boarding school in Jerusalem struggles to blend in with his Jewish classmates. Finding himself pulled in two directions, he faces a life-altering choice regarding his identity.”

6/26/15- Very good reviews for this movie. TRDB.

5) GLASS CHIN– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “With his boxing career in sharp decline, Bud Gordon relies on a shady restaurant owner to recover his self-respect and financial stability. But the decision turns out to be disastrous when Gordon is wrongly blamed for a murder.”

6/26/15- Very good professional reviews but weak audience ones. I’d give it a try. TRDB.

6) A MURDER IN THE PARK– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “This arresting documentary chronicles a murder case that made headlines in 1999 when Alstory Simon’s confession led to the release of death-row inmate Anthony Porter, who was convicted of the crime. But his exoneration has been called into question.”

6/26/15- Good reviews from critics and excellent ones from audiences. TRDB.

7) MALA MALA– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Nine members of the LGBT community in Puerto Rico recount their efforts to accept and embrace their true sexual identities in this witty social documentary highlighting the island’s dynamic and diverse transgender culture.”

7/1/15- Very good reviews including the one in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

Not Recommended–

1) MAX– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this affecting drama based on real events, military dog Max is adopted by the family of his trainer, who was killed in Afghanistan. Besides helping the family overcome their grief, Max’s arrival provides new clues about the soldier’s death.”

6/26/15- Weak critical review but audiences have liked it. TRDB.

2) ADVANTAGEOUS- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “When age threatens her job as spokesperson for a radical procedure that offers lasting youth, a single mom faces a difficult decision to undergo the treatment — a sacrifice that may forever alter her but will secure her daughter’s future.”

6/26/15- Professional critics liked it but audiences did not. I’m not into sci-fi. TRDB.

3) BIG GAME– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. ” In the rugged countryside of Finland, a young thirteen-year-old (Onni Tommila) embarks on a traditional quest to prove himself by spending twenty-four hours alone in the wild, armed with only a bow and arrow. After witnessing a spectacular crash, he discovers the escape pod from Air Force One, containing the President of the United States (Samuel L. Jackson). When they realize a group of kidnappers is hot on their trail with the intention of taking the president, this unlikely duo must escape their hunters as they search for the American Special Forces team sent out to find them.”

6/26/15- Some ridiculous reviews by critics and audiences did not care for it. My guess is that I wouldn’t either. TRDB.

4) ESCOBAR: PARADISE LOST– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “While visiting his brother on Colombia’s idyllic Pacific coast, young surfer Nick falls in love with a woman named Maria — only to discover that she’s the niece of notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.”

6/26/15- Poor reviews. TRDB.

5) FELT- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “In an effort to escape the overwhelming pain of sexual trauma from her past, a haunted artist crafts bizarre costumes that help her disappear into various alter egos — whose behavior is unpredictable.”

6/26/15- Weak critical review and poor audience reviews. TRDB.

6) THE LITTLE DEATH– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “In a typical suburban neighborhood, the veil over four couples’ personal lives are pulled aside to reveal their erotic fetishes, including a woman turned on by tears, a couple’s out-of-control experimentation and phone sex for the hearing impaired.”

7) THE MIDNIGHT SWIM– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “After Amelia Brooks dives into the deep waters of Spirit Lake and never resurfaces, her three daughters go there together to hunt for an explanation. Instead, the mysteries of the lake only grow deeper once the women arrive.”

8) THE PRINCESS OF FRANCE– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “After his father’s death, theater director Victor returns to Buenos Aires to helm a radio version of a Shakespeare comedy, which attracts the interest of several actresses who have been — or hope to be — amorously involved with him.”

6/26/15- Decent reviews by critics, mostly for mood and language rather than drama alone. Audiences have given this movie terrible ratings. TRDB.

I have a feeling I’ll be with the audiences on this one. TRDB.

Synopsis by Netflix. “Documentary filmmaker Josh Srebnick is up against a creative wall when he meets an attractive and quirky young couple, Jamie and Darby, who bring new vigor and energy to the lives of Josh and his wife — until a professional conflict arises.”3/27/15– Mostly good professional reviews– the NY Times gave it a good review with some qualifications. Audiences have been luke warm to the film. TRDB.

1/26/15- I enjoyed the movie, especially the very realistic war scenes but I thought it was about a half hour too long and the hackneyed theme of men returning from war damaged both physically and emotionally a bit too familiar. TRDB.

5/21/15- This movie, Russia’s candidate for the Best Foreign Film for the 2015 Academy Awards, received super reviews but I can’t believe that. While not without merit, one reviewer said the movie was one big Russian stereotypical problem after another (booze, corruption etc). and I could not agree more. Way too long also. P.S.- it didn’t win. TRDB. Netflix.

2) SLOW WEST– 2015. “A 16-year-old boy (Smit-McPhee) heads west on a journey across 19th Century frontier America in search of the woman he loves. 5/16/15- This movie was a big hit in Sweden but for me and for many critics it seemed ridiculous. There WERE a few funny scenes, particularly the one involving Mikhail Gorbachev. TRDB.

1) SONG ONE– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. Fanny, desperate to reach her comatose brother Henry, gives a book of his song lyrics to James Forrester, Henry’s favorite singer, to set to music. As the project unfolds, it changes James’s and Fanny’s lives as neither could have expected.”1/23/15- Weak reviews all around. A few really liked it. TRDB. Netflix.

5/7/15- Panned by most of the critics, this movie starring Anne Hathaway and Mary Steenburgen was a bit weak at times but was blessed with some very good music. It was also refreshing to see an American movie that did not wrap up all of the subplots with the ending. I’ll give it an OK. TRDB. Netflix.

2) THE HUMBLING– 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “Adapted from a Philip Roth novel, this steamy drama follows an elderly, fading actor after he retires and moves to a farmhouse, where he develops a strange and intense relationship with a young woman.”

5/10/15- I’m not an Al Pacino fan but in this movie he is great playing a washed up actor with all of the fear and desperation that goes along with it. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

3) VIVA LA LIBERTA– 2014. Synopsis by Rotten Tomatoes. “In this elegant and chilling story about world politics, the great Toni Servillo defies expectations playing two roles, imbuing each character with brilliant nuance and astonishing attention to detail. In the first, he personifies political failure in the role of the disgraced ideologue and party leader, Enrico Oliveri. In the second, he embodies the shrewd genius of a madman as Oliveri’s unhinged twin brother who seizes control of the nation amidst the void of his brother’s disappearance.”

5/12/15- I enjoyed this movie very much. Jake Gyllenhaal was great and totally believable as a sociopath and more. TRDB.

MOVIES I SAW THIS WEEK AT HOME-

1) LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM– 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “This documentary recounts the Vietnam War’s final days, when unexpected roadblocks threatened the evacuation of America’s South Vietnamese allies. Witnesses and rare footage reveal the heroism and sacrifice that played out amid the chaos.”9/5/14- Excellent reviews including the one in today’s NY Times. TRDB.

5/1/15- An exhaustive description of what actually happened during those last few days before the evacuation of our embassy in Saigon. Very well done and an important piece of work. TRDB. Netflix.

2) MOMMY- 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “Diane Després is a flamboyant middle-aged widow and mother to Steve, an adolescent with severe emotional and behavioral problems. As Diane struggles with Steve’s radical mood swings, she begins receiving help from a solicitous new neighbor.”

1/23/15- Excellent reviews. TRDB.

5/2/15- A unique story, well acted and very intense. TRDB. Netflix.

3) BOY MEETS GIRL– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Growing up in conservative Kentucky, Ricky has always regarded himself as a woman in a male’s body but isn’t able to make a connection with the right man. Then he meets the stunning Francesca, who compels Ricky to reevaluate what love means to him.”

2/6/15- Excellent reviews from critics and audiences alike. The NY Times did not like it and felt that the characters were too hackneyed to match the seriousness of the topic. TRDB.

5/6/15- A good movie that tackles a sensitive topic with finesse. TRDB. Netflix.

1) STILL ALICE– 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “When 50-year-old linguistics professor Alice Howland begins having trouble remembering words, her symptoms ultimately lead to a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s — which forces Alice and her family to make radical changes in their lives.”12/5/14- Mostly very good reviews but a few really did not like it at all calling it a TV type movie. 2/23/15- I thought that this was an excellent movie with very good acting and a really special screenplay. Very scary!! TRDB.

2) BELOVED SISTERS– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “In the late 18th century, sisters Charlotte and Caroline begin an unconventional romance with poet Friedrich Schiller, who cares deeply for them both. As their situation evolves, each sister finds her life altered in ways she never imagined possible.”

1/9/15- This film received very good reviews from the critics, the NY Times being an exception. Audiences did not care for it at all. TRDB.

3) THE SLEEPWALKER– 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “As Kaia and her boyfriend work to restore her childhood home, they get an unexpected visit from her estranged sister, Christine, and her fiancé. And it doesn’t take long for recriminations old and new to enter the women’s lives as well.”

1) SAGRADA: THE MYSTERY OF CREATION– 2014. Synopsis by Netflix. “One of the most iconic structures ever built, Barcelona’s La Sagrada Familia is a unique and fascinating architectural project conceived by controversial genius Antoni Gaudi in the late 19th century. ”

2) JUST BEFORE I GO– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Courteney Cox makes her directorial bow with this darkly comic feature about Ted Morgan, a man contemplating suicide — but not before revisiting his hometown. As he begins to attack his bucket list, he soon realizes he’s not the only one suffering.”

2) FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this period drama based on Thomas Hardy’s classic novel, winsome Bathsheba Everdene wins the hearts of three disparate men: sheep farmer Gabriel Oak, dashing soldier Frank Troy and William Boldwood, a moneyed older man.”

5/1/15- Very good reviews from critics and audiences alike. TRDB.

3) FAR FROM MEN– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “In 1954 rural Algeria, French teacher Daru is given the task of escorting an Arab man accused of murder to the town where the trial is to take place. Along the way, the two develop a rapport that forces Daru to make some consequential moral choices.”

4/17/15- From the Tribeca Film Festival, this was an interesting and unusual drama starring Vigo Mortensen. Somewhat glacial in its movement but I’d definitely recommend it. TRDB.

4) GERONTOPHILIA– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “After 18-year-old Lake realizes that he’s attracted to much older men, he starts working at a senior citizens home, where he begins a tender romance with a former actor. But the lovers must hit the road when their affair causes consternation.”

5/1/15- Generally poor reviews but a few critics thought it was excellent. The NY Times did not like it. I might give this one a try. TRDB.

5) MARIE’S STORY– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Set in 1885, this absorbing drama recounts the life of Marie Heurtin, who was born deaf and blind. Still uncommunicative at age 14, Maria is sent to an institute, where a dedicated nun slowly coaxes her into the world of human interaction.”

5/1/15- Very good reviews. The NY Times felt that the movie was too heavy on the relationships and not as interested in the teaching methods. We’ll see. TRDB.

6) RIDE- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “When Jackie’s free-spirited son swaps college for the breakers of California, she decides to follow him west, hoping to mend fences between them. Soon after arriving, Jackie meets a young surfing instructor who helps her rediscover her sexuality.”

Soon, they’re both on the lam through the heartlands of Canada.”5/1/15- Poor critical review, most calling it tired and clichéd. Audiences have enjoyed it, however. TRDB.

2) HYENA– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “After years of rubbing shoulders with London’s underworld, detective Michael Logan has made more than his share of shady deals. But this time, his maneuvering lands him in the crosshairs of his gangster confederates — and makes him a police target.”

5/1/15- OK reviews but the NY Times did not like it and from what I’ve read I don’t think I will either.

3) NATURAL RESISTANCE– 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “Reprising the theme of his 2004 documentary Mondovino, wine authority Jonathan Nossiter visits Italy’s vineyards to chronicle independent vintners’ efforts to resist regulatory and commercial pressures to modernize their production methods.”

5/1/15- I’ve seen just 1 review (from the NY Times) and it’s good. Sounds boring to me. TRDB.

4) REALITY- 2015. Synopsis by Netflix. “While working as a cameraman on an execrable cooking show, Jason pursues investors for a horror film he’s dying to direct. He finds a producer willing to fund the movie but with one proviso: Jason must first come up with the perfect cinematic groan.”

4/12/15- Overall I’ll give this movie a passing grade but I was not overly impressed. Come in mid-way and see the better second half. TRDB.
