SOMERS TOWN

SOMERS TOWN- Premise by Netflix. ” After leaving his Nottingham hometown for the big city of London, brash young Tomo (Thomas Turgoose) befriends introverted Polish immigrant Marek (Piotr Jagiello). The mismatched teens bond as they each develop a crush on Maria (Elisa Lasowski), a French waitress. Director Shane Meadows‘s black-and-white coming-of-age film follows the teens as they experience their first summer in London. Ireneusz Czop co-stars as Marek’s hard-drinking father.

3/10- I could NOT understand the dialogue which is unusual for me. There should have been sub-titles. At the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival. TRDB.

ONE TOO MANY MORNINGS

ONE TOO MANY MORNINGS- 2010. Premise by Netflix. “After learning his longtime girlfriend has been unfaithful, devastated Peter (Anthony Deptula) arrives at the church where his estranged high school friend, Fischer (Stephen Hale), lives in exchange for locking up at night. But he soon discovers Fischer’s issues are bigger than his. As Peter and Fischer forge a new relationship and seek common ground, Peter’s girlfriend (Tina Kapousis) arrives on the scene. Michael Mohan directs this indie comedy.

3/10- The movie was shot on a shoestring, on weekends. Quite amateurish but very clever and I liked it. I saw this at the Martha’s Vineyaerd Film Festival. TRDB.

SHELTER ME

 SHELTER ME- Premise by Netflix. “Lovers Anna (Maria de Medeiros) and Mara (Antonia Liskova) find their carefree lives turned upside down when, upon returning home from vacation, they discover a young Moroccan named Anis (Mounir Ouadi) has stowed away in the trunk of their car to cross the border into Italy. Forming a makeshift family, the trio soon finds the pressures of the outside world threatening to ruin the delicate relationships they’ve forged with one another.”

3/10- I really enjoyed this movie. Great acting by the women especially. TRDB. Netflix.

PAA

PAA- 2009. Premise by Netflix.  “Real-life father and son reverse roles in this drama featuring Bollywood idol Amitabh Bachchan, who portrays a youth with a rare condition that causes him to age rapidly. Abhishek Bachchan stars as the boy’s dad, who helps him cope with the illness. Filming in India and England, writer-director R. Balki delivers a heartwarming story about both childhood and fatherhood. Vidya Balan co-stars as the boy’s mother.”

2/10- This was pure Bollywood, music and all but with all the ham I still liked it. TRDB.

TRUCKER

TRUCKER- 2008. Directed by James Mottern and starring Michelle Monaghan. About a woman, a long distance truck driver, who is unable to make lasting relationships. She is suddenly given her 11yr. old son who has always lived with his father and who she has never met. The story is about their evolving relationship. Very good reviews. 10/09

2/10- Great acting and a very good story. I liked it very much. TRDB.

THE POOL

THE POOL- Premise by Netflix. “In this seriocomic study of class differences in India, a young hotel worker becomes obsessed with a swimming pool at an opulent mansion in Panjom, Goa. His life takes a wild turn when he meets the mysterious family that arrives at the house. The film, a World Cinema Dramatic Competition entry at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, is the narrative feature debut of director and co-writer Chris Smith, who helmed the famed documentary American Movie.”

1/27/10- I found this movie very interesting and very well done. I’d definitely recommend it when it comes to Netflix. I saw it on the Sundance Channel. TRDB.

FALLING AWAKE- Premise by Netflix. “No matter how badly you want to, it’s hard to leave the neighborhood — especially when that neighborhood is the Bronx. This is the lesson aspiring musician Jay (Andrew Cisneros) learns when professional and romantic dreams pull him into the wider world. Despite his ambitions, loyalty, obligation and the cycles of violence and trauma that have long plagued his Bronx home continue to draw him back. Jenna Dewan and Nestor Serrano also star.” Very good early reviews.

DEATH IN LOVE- 2008. Premise by Netflix. “During World War II, a Jewish woman (Jacqueline Bisset) had an affair with a Nazi war criminal. Decades later, her two sons live in the emotional shadow of this tryst. One (Josh Lucas) drifts through life until a he’s befriended by a charming co-worker (Adam Brody); the other (Lukas Haas) is unable to flee his stifling relationship with his mother. When the war criminal reemerges, all must confront the past and new directions for the future.

1/23/10- Very unusual movie that didn’t really come together but had an impact on me. TRDB.

MARY AND MAX

MARY AND MAX- Premise by Netflix. “Mary Dinkle, a chubby 8-year-old Australian girl, and Max Horovitz, an obese, middle-aged New Yorker with Asperger’s syndrome, are a pair of unlikely pen pals in this quirky clay animation feature from writer-director Adam Elliot. Corresponding for two decades, the friends delve into a variety of topics, including sex, kleptomania, psychiatry, taxidermy and more. Toni Collette and Philip Seymour Hoffman provide the voices of Mary and Max.”

1/20/10- I saw this movie and once again was surprised that I could really like an animated feature film. I definitely recommend it. TRDB.

VAGABOND

VAGABOND- 1985. Premise by Netflix. “In the south of France one winter, a young woman, Mona (Sandrine Bonnaire), is found frozen to death in a ditch. Through flashbacks and interviews, writer-director Agnes Varda paints a fractured portrait of Mona’s final weeks as she camps alone and falls in with various men and women, many of whom try to give her life direction. Others do not have her best interests at heart, as they project their own needs and problems onto her.”

1/20/10- I liked this movie, especially the interesting technique of doing the movie via flashbacks with people whose path she crossed during her last month of life. TRDB.
