4/11- I found the movie interesting and for sure sad as well. Worth a look. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

THE YEAR MY VOICE BROKE- 1988. Danny (Noah Taylor) and Freya (Loene Carmen) are allies and confidantes, until the relentless tides of adolescence change them both forever. The hidden sins of a small town’s older generation are re-enacted as Danny falls hopelessly in love with his best friend. But Freya’s attraction to a troubled older boy, Trevor (Ben Mendelsohn), tears Danny apart. John Duigan directs this touching coming-of-age story set in the 1960s.”

4/11- A very good Australian coming-of-age drama despite missing some of the dialogue. Recommended. TRDB. Netflix Streaming.

JOLENE

JOLENE- 2008. Synopsis by Netflix. “Based on a short story by celebrated novelist E.L. Doctorow, this character study tracks the itinerant exploits of the titular character (Jessica Chastain) as she sets off on an aimless, decade-long journey filled with romance, heartbreak, tumult and inspiration. Boasting an all-star cast — including Dermot Mulroney, Michael Vartan and Chazz Palminteri — this indie effort is helmed by director Dan Ireland.” Reviews are mixed with some very good and some very bad. TRDB.

4/11- Count me as one who, despite a good deal of cliche, enjoyed the movie. TRDB. Netflix.

NAOMI

NAOMI- 2010. An Israeli movie featuring veteran actors Yassi Pollak and Orna Porat. About a beautiful 28yr. old woman (Naomi) married to a much older man who is consumed with obsessive desire for her.

4/11- A very interesting character study with building suspense and I enjoyed the movie very much. TRDB. Seen at the Westchester Jewish Film Festival.

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS- 2011. Synopsis by Netflix. “In this captivating Depression-era melodrama, impetuous veterinary student Jacob Jankowski (Robert Pattinson) joins a celebrated circus as an animal caretaker but faces a wrenching dilemma when he’s transfixed by angelic married performer Marlena (Reese Witherspoon). An affinity for elephants brings together the young pair, but the warmth between them sends Marlena’s cruel husband, animal trainer August (Christoph Waltz), into a frightening fury.” Mediocre professional reviews  but good audience reactions. TRDB.

4/11- A soap opera type movie with a weak screenplay that was a disappointment for me. TRDB. At the Theater.

MAHLER ON THE COUCH

MAHLER ON THE COUCH- 2010. Synopsis by Netflix. “When famed composer Gustav Mahler (Johannes Silberschneider) uncovers his wife Alma’s (Barbara Romaner) sexual infidelities with up-and-coming architect Walter Gropius (Friedrich Mücke), he settles into Sigmund Freud’s (Karl Markovics) couch and pours his heart out on a variety of topics. Percy Adlon and his son, Felix, wrote and direct this quirky take on music, madness and art, propelled by the compositions of Mahler himself.”

4/11- The movie was well acted with an excellent screenplay and of course Mahler’s wonderful music. Very good. Seen at the Westchester Jewish Film Festival. TRDB.

5/18/12– Today’s NY Times thought this was OK if a bit melodramatic. TRDB.

Synopsis by Netflix. “Recasting the 1981 comedy classic starring Dudley Moore, this romantic chuckler chronicles the dilemma faced by philanderer Arthur Bach (Russell Brand) — whether to give up a respectable life and an inheritance of millions for the sake of romance. Jennifer Garner co-stars as Susan Johnson, the gorgeous socialite that Arthur‘s family has chosen for him. As they try to make her last days comfortable, they prepare for the task of fulfilling her dying wish. Defying modern convention, Jack and Louis carry their mother’s coffin through river and woods in a deep communion with nature in order to bury her in a meaningful place.” Awful review in NY Times on 4/1/11.
